In an interview with the Sharks website, assistant coach Paul Anthony has revealed that Stephan Lewiesis an injury doubt ahead of Friday night’s Currie Cup game against the Pumas at Kings Park.

The team came through a tough encounter against Griqusa more or less unscathed, with the big lock limping off after about an hour as the only casualty.

The medical staff will keep an eye on him before making a call tomorrow.

If Lewies is ruled out, the Sharks could either start with JC Astle, or move Etienne Oosthuizen back to lock and let Francois Kleinhans start at blind side flank.

  • Might be good to give Lewis a bit of a break anyway.

Was quite happy with Astle who looks tough as nails. Marco back in the 5 jersey and JC at 4? Still too early to tell about Etienne at flank but I don’t think that experiment should be thrown out after a single game.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 1) : Astle was highly regarded in the Cheetahs junior ranks before he moved to Boland, and was made captain too.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 2) : Thanks KC! Good to know. I didn’t even know what he looked like until last weekend. Do you know which is his preferred number at lock?

  • Liked what I saw from Astle. Marco continues to disappoint me. Paul Jordaan needs to understand that his role is straighten the line, get the gap and immediately pass to the person in a better position. A creator creates tries for other people.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 4) : I agree, I also liked what Astle brought to the game and I would like to see him and Oosthuizen start at lock (if Stephan needs a rest) and bring in Kleinhans at flank

  • @stevovo (Comment 5) : ja hope Kleinhans gets a game as I don’t like locks playing at 7.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 2) : just hope he’s highly regarded in Sharks ranks and not just used as a stop gap until PSDT is ready.
