Rory Duncan the Currie Cup head coach of the Free State Cheetahs have made a number of changes to his side that lost to the Pumas in their opening game. Flyhalf Elgar Watts, who played of the bench last week will replace Willie du Plessis in the number 10 jersey. Another player with Super Rugby experience returning from injury, Jean Cook, comes straight into the starting line up, replacing Neil Claassen.

On the bench, Rudolph Botha  AJ le Roux comes in for Bees Roux and Hercu Liebenberg. Super Rugby scrumhalf Shaun Venter has recovered from a foot injury and will also provide some experience in place of Renier Botha.

Rory Duncan the new coach of the Cheetahs, for the Currie Cup, had a tough start to his first season as coach and will be determined to make things right this weekend.

“Both our games — the warm-up against the Kings and the match against the Pumas – were away fixtures. It will be nice for the guys to have a home game as they haven’t played together in the Free State Stadium,” Duncan said.

“It is always nice running out on your home ground and one thing I can tell you is the guys are fired up for the game against Griquas. They want to rectify the mistakes we made against the Pumas. The guys are very keen.”

Meanwhile Griquas coach Hawies Fourie had to deal with some disruptions this weak.

Jonothan Francke was cleared at a disciplinary hearing earlier this week, after recieving a red car for a spear tackle on Sharks fullback SP Marais andwas only named on the bench. – PJ Vermeulen will replace him in the No.13 jersey.

Injuries have also struck Fourie’s team with both Hilton Lobberts and Danie Dames being withdrawn due to injurie. RJ Liebenberg and Edries Arende will come into the starting lineup for the two injured players, Ewald van der Westhuizen replaces Nicolaas van Dyk at tighthead prop.

Fourie said that while these two team know each other well, as the are franchise partners during Super Rugby, there will be some unknowns as Rory Duncan and Franco Smith were not involved so heavily in Super rugby and will want to do their own thing and stick with what they believe. Fourie said he wanted his team to bounce back from their first round loss and build on the last 20 minutes of that game, where they put a lot of pressure on the Sharks.

“It is vital in any competition to start well,” he said, adding: “Our goal is to win every game we play in and this weekend is an opportunity for us to rectify the mistakes of last week.”

  • @pastorshark (Comment 2) : think it’s going to be a close hard game with neither side giving an inch after both lost their first games.
