The Sharks U19 and U21 teams for the weekend’s game against Free State have been announced with one very big move. Junior Bok and Sharks inside center Andre Esterhuizen has been named at flank for the U21 side.
Esterhuizen certainly has the size and physical presence to make this move and since the Sharks just lost a number of quality players in this position and the senior side is now playing a lock to cover flank, it could just be a great move for the Sharks and will be watched with interest.
Tim Swiel continues at fullback for the U/21 side, while Tyler Fisher will play of the bench.
The last few matches have not had everything go their way despite the talented group of players representing the province, but a win would do their top four aspirations the world of good.
Similarly, the Under 19 side have had their share of struggles in their Absa Under 19 campaign and will have their work cut out for them against a side who have won three of their four matches to date.
Both teams enjoyed a bye last weekend and will be energised ahead of this round of matches.
Tighthead prop Ruan Kramer captains the Under 19s in their match which kicks off at 3pm on Friday, while centre Gareth Miekle will lead the Under 21s in their curtain-raiser (4.45pm) ahead of the Cell C Sharks Absa Currie Cup clash against the Pumas (7.10pm).

This could either be a stroke of genius, or ludicrous…time will tell
Though I hate converting a talented backline player into a forward…very rarely works
btw…what is up with our age group teams….they absolutely suck, having only been able to beat the Leopards! Got hammered by the bulls…lost to the Lions, WP etc.
Stupid
Im sorry but i dont see the logic after seeing him play centre. The only resons why he should be moved is if they feel he will not cope with his pace at senior level and is more suited to flank and also if his handling skills arent up there. I hope its not a case of needing a flank so trying to see. The guy is a SA u20 centre
Is Dick Muir back at the Sharks π
Would be interesting to know who initiated the move?!?!?!?!
This for me is a shocker, we have enough LF’s in this country and at the Sharks.
We sure as hell know how to stuff up careers at the Sharks, when will we learn?……………………….
We have one of the best center combo’s at the Sharks in years and we break it to pieces, Esterhuizen and Fisher who is on the bench after a long injury layoff were lethal….. eish!!!!!!
It’s not like we’re overflowing with quality centres either. π
Sithole is still new to this role, while Paul Jordaan is doing his best to emulate Brent Russell’s career.
Frans Steyn and JP are not a long term prospects and Heimar Williams is solid if unspectacular.
Don’t see the point of this…
@JD (Comment 5) : Jake White
I’m also not thrilled with this move. Why are we so obsessed with playing players out of position. We messed Frans Steyn around, did same with Lambie and plenty others and now they are trying to convert a superbly talented centre into a flank? Makes no sense. This stuff should be done at schoolboy lavel and not once the guy is already making a name for himself
@robdylan (Comment 8) : welcome back!! So what do you think about the move?
The last baby bok backline player that was converted to a looseforward, after he had made his SR debut on the wing, was Pierre Spies π
Let us first see how this move turns out before slamming the decision, remember the similar outcry when Burden was moved from centre to hooker? And that was a move that worked. I can name a host of other players who was moved in their early 20’s or so that was a success. Gobani Bobo from flank to centre, Beast from 8thman to prop, JPP from lock to fullback…
@Mpandla (Comment 11) : ag hell no!!!!!!!!! Keep AndrΓ© in the back line! !!!!!!!!!!
And then some more crap news, Glenwoods Jaco Coetzee and capt of the SA u18 team this year has now signed to go to WP for 2 years π WTF!!! things are not going to plan under the new regime.
@Mpandla (Comment 11) : Spies just never had the mongrel in him to be a forward, possesses all of the attributes and skill yet he has the temperament of a poodle instead of a rottweiler.
@sharks_lover (Comment 14) : Professional rugby dude, unfortunately we can’t keep them all.
Of course its a professional career, but we do expect our scouts to keep our best talent at home, of late we are losing a lot of top players, something we did not do before…
This is what happens when you contract players because of their size and not because of their skill and x factor,watched Tyler Fisher the other day and was hopeless,way to slow.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 1) : u21’s are playing with only 2 dogs and one has moved up to CC this week,no fetcher and no enforcer,all ball carriers and no ball to play with,u19’s very similar problem.
@sharks_lover (Comment 14) : Lions have signed Glenwood and SA Schools trialists Kenny van Niekerk and Koos Tredoux. Glenwood and KZN flyhalf Curtin Jonas has also signed for the Lions.
@slammerboy (Comment 20) : I saw, my gripe is the Glenwood 8thman was really one of the big stars at Craven week this year. I know we cannot keep all our players.
KZN were nowhere at Craven Week this year so I dont mind those guys leaving if other guys coming in from provinces that did well…
@SheldonK (Comment 22) : Yes the team did not play that great but the Coetzee fellow did, thus he is Capt and starting 8thman.
Amazing how JW’s solution at fh for SR is now playing fb for the u/21’s π
@FireTheLooser (Comment 24) : yes but I think he’s going to play 15 a lot more than 10.
um okay π―
@FireTheLooser (Comment 24) : scary isn’t it and how many games did that lunacy cost the Sharks,questions do start arising about the not so Great White then
@FireTheLooser (Comment 24) : Please don’t get me started on Swiel, his skill set looks fit for 15 but as soon as I see his name next to the number 10 on a team sheet, i start breaking out in a cold sweat and have to fight not to let my inner hulk come out and smash everything in my way. Between Lambie and Fred we have two awesome fly halves, even now with Cronje we have a reasonable stop gap for any injuries to the dynamic duo, but hopefully the Great White will never pick Swiel at 10 again
@SheldonK (Comment 22) : KZN got I think 3 or 4 guys in the SA school squad…they must have been pretty impressive to get noticed from a team that struggled that much.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 29) :
yes … as to the total of …. 0 Lions …
@Zibbie (Comment 30) : Ja, no Grey Bloem guys either, I think. Anyway if you followed the press I think its pretty clear that being selected for SA schools is by no means the be all and end all of any rugby players dreams.
@sharks_lover (Comment 23) : Yes he is a good player…but i hav a good feeling that he is a border adn not actually a durbanite so chances of him staying in durbs were always thin. but yes he a good [email protected]Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 29) : Well the team did struggle..i watched a couple games and eish. My point is if we lose a couple to other provinces its not exactly a train smash as the guys in other provinces will then be looking for a place to play
@SheldonK (Comment 32) : This is true but if he is as big a loss to us as was last years SA schools captain was to WP then I will be miffed. π
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 33) : funny enough in this day and age the wheel turns quickly..dont discount guys playing their junior rugby at one province and then their senior rugby elsewhere…all depends on opportunites
So here’s my 10 cents worth ladies and gents: just give it a shot and see…it’s not as if nothing like this has ever been done before!! I seem to remember a wing-turned-hooker and a flank-turned-prop that have turned out VERY well! We have a million centres at the moment and we have a boy with talent who just may make it work…let it play out and see what happens…
Good idea, bad idea I dont know but I think Esterhuizen will be licking his lips off in anticipation of getting stuck in – I saw him in the VC game against Boland and he mixed it up with the forwards non stop.
Any way I think I saw that the game will be broadcast so it should be fun to see what transpires.
@pastorshark (Comment 35) :
Yeah, but the Bulls also have a wing-turned-8th man and that didnt work so well… π
@VinChainSaw (Comment 37) : I think this little issue will soon be one for your coaches to solve, rather than ours.
@robdylan (Comment 38) : Speaking code again I see π
@FireTheLooser (Comment 39) : no I think it means Spies will be back soon and they must find a place for Captain Pretoria to play.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 39) : @JD (Comment 40) :
no, I’m talking about Esterhuizen, not Spies
@robdylan (Comment 41) : So he’s off to streamer land? π―
@robdylan (Comment 41) : don’t tell me he signed for Province?!?!?!
@FireTheLooser (Comment 42) : @JD (Comment 43) :
let’s just say that if he doesn’t successfully transition to 7, then his future will involve playing as a back somewhere else. Jake has spoken.
@robdylan (Comment 41) :
Obtuse and obvious – so similar yet so far apart.
@Big Fish (Comment 45) : one of life’s little ironies π
@robdylan (Comment 44) : well at least he’s a big boy so there will be no “bulking up” and thus if the move does not work he will be able to move back to 12 without to much problems (I think). Just glad he’s not off to another team and I also think it could be a good move for him as there’s lots of 12’s ahead of him in the Bok line where as at 7 there seems to be less.
@robdylan (Comment 44) : Why?
Very upsetting but I will give it a chance. Jean Cook has a year to go on his contract. He better be a Shark in 2016.
@vanmartin (Comment 48) : cause he’s probably not going to use him at 12 as he’s going to use Steyn and Jordaan at 12.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 37) :
Contrary, from the Bulls’ perspective it worked out great.
He was huge in their ’09 and ’10 championship seasons. Last year, his late season injury was instrumental in their final round slump.
Let me get this straight….
…the same guy that went to Pretoria, and was selected on the bench ahead of Heimar, is now not even considered to be good enough to play said position, and will now be retrofitted to become a forward?! π―
Seems our esteemed coach made quite a few of these rookie mistakes during this SR season. Let’s hope he has learned from them. π
@robdylan (Comment 44) : So someone who excelled at Junior Bok level at 12 does not even have the potential to step up at senior level according to Jake? Alrighty then… π―
Wow
@robdylan (Comment 44) : I am starting to get a very uneasy feeling about our DOR.
@Bokhoring (Comment 55) : What I’d like to know is…why?
Why move THE SA u/20 inside center to blindside flank?
Is he lacking the necessary skill, passing, vision, speed, guile etc. to make him a successful 12?
Has he rubbed JW the wrong way?
Is it because somebody dropped the ball in contracting a future 7, and he’s the only last minute option available for the spot?
@FireTheLooser (Comment 56) : If its cos of any of those reasons id be very worried. The only logical reason is that they see an opportunity for him to excel there and perhaps his pace and handling isnt up to what they want from a senior outside back- which is why he hasnt got any game time there. Still a bit puzzling and is kinda a shot of no confidence in the young flanks we do have.
My issue is not so much the move to 7 (which I have my doubts about), but that Rob says he will be discarded if he does not make it as a forward.
@Bokhoring (Comment 58) : Sounds like somebody is on a power trip π
@FireTheLooser (Comment 59) : and you think this is a new thing? π
@robdylan (Comment 60) : Man your tongue must have almost been bitten through these last few months.
@robdylan (Comment 60) : No wonder MornΓ© is such a big fan of the post 2015 central contracting
…decisions on converting an u/20 bok to another position – because the headmaster said so – will never be allowed to happen.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 61) : haha. yeth
I know I have read on this very site that Esterhuizen’s pace was a concern which was why he was never considered at 13 after Jordaan’s injury. Of course JW was 100% correct that Sithole (then untried at 13) was the correct choice at 13. Tough choice, criticized by some who insisted it should have been Esterhuizen. JW 1 naysayers 0. Now JW gives Esterhuizen a chance to make it as a 7 and there is criticism round the board, with everyone asking why. Well gee people, don’t you think it may be his lack of pace that JW identified 6 months ago?????? JW was right with Sithole, give this a chance. Also, someone has to make these tough decisions, that is why we have a DOR, it is not a matter of a power trip. Sometimes you all are so illogical and emotional.
Where is Morne to back me up on my last statement? π
I don’t see him being the best loosie in the country as senior level mainly because of how this position has evolved, I would advise him to move to the Lions as they have shortage in the no.12 pos,just because I see him as a national asset and would hate it if Jake was to waste such a talent.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 64) : Esterhuyzen plays 12 though, and I doubt that he is any slower than Frans.
@Chippa (Comment 65) : That guy that played 12 for them against the Bulls was pretty good though.
@Bokhoring (Comment 66) : You don’t know that, JW does. It would not surprise me if his pace were inferior to Frans in the tests performed. You don’t seriously think JW has made this decision with no reason?
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 61) : @robdylan (Comment 63) : you poor man!!!!!! π
@Chippa (Comment 65) :
Should maybe have Bart Schoeman contact him π π
@Bokhoring(comment67):I was also impressed but I think Esterhuizen is better and would make the SA representative stronger in the expanded [email protected] Bear(comment68):I doubt that Frans is faster,I will ask a retorical question but I wonder if Conrad Smith is the FASTEST 13 or is it just his defensive qualities and ability to put players away that makes good because he is not fancy nor a fast player from what I’ve seen of him
@Bokhoring (Comment 67) :
Harold Voster . came through our Jnr ranks . no you cant have his contact details π
Esterhuizen will go to WP if he doesn’t make it as a flank in Durbs
@robdylan (Comment 73) : That sucks
@robdylan (Comment 73) : Can he not hav a go as loosehead prop before going to WP?
@robdylan (Comment 73) : that would be a pity! Maybe he can hang around as a 7 next year and then move back to 12 once JW leave.
@robdylan (Comment 73) : As what will he go – flank or centre?
If this move comes off it could be a masterstroke. A roving blindside with the linking and distribution abilities of a 12 could be very good for the Sharks. At the same time I’m very uncomfortable with the idea of messing with a player’s career prospects on (what I desperately hope is more than) a whim.
Imagine the Sharks facing a WP side with Rob du Preez, Esterhuizen and Pat Howard lined up against them.
Speaking of which if Im not mistaken last weeks WP side had 3 Michaelhouse old boys playing in the starting line up -20%.
BTW where is Jean-Luc du Plessis – injured or busy converting to hooker?
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 77) : centre
@Bokhoring (Comment 80) : being chastised for his supposedly poor attitude
@Dancing Bear (Comment 64) : Sithole (a wing) moved to outside center (one position)…same had been done with JP….Jordaan has played wing, 13 and now 12.
De Allende played wing, 12 and now selected at 13 for the Boks.
But JW is not merely moving a backline player to a different position in the backline…oh no, he’s moving an inside centre to the side of the scrum…a position which our number 4 lock is unable to grasp.
Maybe we should have moved Kanko to 13 after all, Keegan to fullback, Beast to 12…surely they all have the athleticism to easily slot in with backline play. π
@robdylan (Comment 81) : I hope you are joking?
@robdylan (Comment 81) : π― π
Are there anymore of these little “school master” incidents happening at the Sharks?
How the heck did JW survive it at the Brumbies, surely they wouldn’t have taken the “school master” attitude too lightly?
@robdylan (Comment 81) : Im starting to get blue.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 85) : thorry.
I’ll move my teeth back to their regular posithion
anyone starting to wish I’d been right when back last year, I questioned why the hell the Sharks would want or need White when they had Venter in place?
@robdylan (Comment 87) : I wasn’t a fan of the idea either, but true to Sharks supporter form (and as with Jacques Louis Potgieter), I was able to get over my reservations and support the man fully.
But he’s starting to hurt our boys, so my support for his is slowly fading. πΏ
@robdylan (Comment 86) : π
@robdylan (Comment 87) : I still question that decision!!! It’s like moving from from a Porche Carrera GT to a Porche Boxter……… not to bad and still better than a Volla but not nearly the same!!!!!!!!!!
@JD (Comment 90) : nice way of putting it!
@robdylan (Comment 87) : Can we not have a Sharksworld fund raiser to collect the required funds to open a practice for Venter in Umhlanga and relocate his family?
@JD (Comment 90) : Have you read Venter’s latest article on SS>…the man is a scholar of the game of rugby.
a lot of bad player management going on at the sharks,i get the feeling junior coaches trying to treat players like kids.You can get away with it while you winning but 3 losses out of 4 games??
@VinChainSaw (Comment 37) : Of course there are a lot of things we do better than the Bulls…being cool π and moving players to a new position are just two of them…
@FireTheLooser (Comment 93) : It is a very good article…lots of good points
Meikle is out, Taylor will captain u21s.
Not sure who plays 12
@robdylan (Comment 97) : Esterhuizen back to 12? π
@SheldonK (Comment 98) : LOL, no…. apparently Tyler Fisher comes in
@robdylan (Comment 87) : Was there an option to keep Venter? As I understood it, his was a temporary gig.
@robdylan (Comment 99) : Who onto the bench then?
@vanmartin (Comment 100) : I’m starting to think that a lot of what we were told simply wasn’t true.
@SheldonK (Comment 101) : haikonna weetnie.
@robdylan (Comment 103) : hahha probably who ever they find walking out the academy now
@robdylan (Comment 102) : Eish π
@vanmartin (Comment 105) : look, players like to bitch. That much hasn’t changed. They bitched under Plum, they’re bitching under White. Not necessarily the end of the world.
There have definitely been positive changes. Just concerned that it’s not all a bed of roses.
Free State u19s ahead 7-0
@robdylan (Comment 106) : No doubt, always at least two sides to a story but it’s distressing nonetheless when their might exist a chance that some players might not be treated fairly.
@robdylan (Comment 107) : You find a stream for this one?
Still early to start writing the union obituary guys.
Keep your chins up.
The question is….
Is JW making strong moves toward ridding the Sharks of their laid back beach bum vibe.
…or is he a control freak hell bent on showing everybody that he’s the boss, and if he tells his fullback to play tight head prop, then that fullback (nor anyone else) better not question him.
From the little I’m seeing here, it seems to be the latter. π
Lead cut to 7-6
We now lead 9-7. Three penalties to Radebe
@vanmartin (Comment 109) : naught. It’s not televised.
Guy at the ground keeping me posted.
Westville Boys at number 18 in the country. It does my heart good. π
@robdylan (Comment 97) : Why, not standing at attention when spoken to? π
@Big Fish (Comment 115) : By all accounts silently going their way and getting the job done, and improving while the 2 KZN big boys thrash and flail the skin off each other – and thats off the rugby field.
@robdylan (Comment 106) : Is the bitching across the board, it bugs me if the juniors are already at that stage.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 118) : more the seniors
still we lead 9-7, with a few to play.
We win the u19 game 9-7!
@robdylan (Comment 106) : without some manure the roses will not grow and flowers will not smell as sweet! !!!
@robdylan (Comment 121) : well off to a good (well sort of at least better) start today!!!! Come on under 21’s time to step up!!!!!!
Hugh Bladen reckons that the only peculiar thing about the teamsheet is Swiel playing at 15 instead of 10. Keeps mistaking mistaking Cope for Swiel regardless of his previous observation π
revised team:
The Cell C Sharks Under 21s
15. Timothy Swiel
14. Alcino Izaacs
13. Tyler Fisher
12. Nukululeko Marwana
11. Alrin Eksteen
10. Brendon Cope
9. Dylan Marcus
8. Jean Pretoruis
7. Andre Esterhuizen
6. Barend Potgieter
5. Sias Koen
4. David Fisher
3. Bartholemew le Roux
2. Jacques Taylor (capt)
1. Matthew Jones
Replacements
16. Roan Dalzell
17. Brandon Landsberg
18. Ferdie Horn
19. Buzwe Mpotulo
20. Lotter Pretorius
21. Neil Maritz
22. Sipho Mkize
0 – 3
Free State lead 3-0
Esterhuizen takes his first lineout ball!
Sharks going for poles
3 – 3
Sharks have a slight edge in both territory and possession at 51% for both
Sharks lose the ball 2 meters in front of FS tryline π
good man Van!
Can I ask you for a match report? π
@robdylan (Comment 133) : I’ll do my best but watching on a drifta so may miss a few things
@vanmartin (Comment 134) : haha, anything you can do is better than I’ll manage to do!
@robdylan (Comment 135) : Okay, will do
Handling errors
Sharks 4, FS 2
@vanmartin (Comment 137) : FS 3
Cope tactical kicking has been good. FS scrumhalf a real menace.
FS awarded penalty. Esterhuizen off, not sure why
FS try, number 22 dots down in left-hand corner
@vanmartin (Comment 140) : ja so the experiment is not off to a very good start!
S 3 – 10 FS
FS awarded another kickable penalty. Sharks breakdown play has been poor
Potgieter slots it
3 – 13
Sharks win a penalty, go for corner
@vanmartin (Comment 144) : can’t imagine why π
Nothing comes of lineout but Sharks evntually win wall back, opt for lineout and then win a scrum from error on FS side
Swiel making silly mistakes at fullback
FS possession now at 72%!
Both team’s lineout have been poor so far
@vanmartin (Comment 150) : not looking good at all for the Sharkies.
Halftime. Score still 3 – 13 to the FS
@JD (Comment 152) : Nope and the mistakes in general play have an awfully familar feel to them
What a dour bloody affair from the Sharks…
Esterhuizen’s injury looked quite serious, he’ll be out for a while, having lasted the whole of 15mins. as JW’s solution to the global no.7 crisis. π
“if you’re short on forwards, but have an inside center to spare…”
@FireTheLooser (Comment 155) : Did you see what happened? Missed it.
Second half underway
@vanmartin (Comment 156) : He got injured at a ruck…crawled on his hands and knees away from it, and stayed there while the medics attended to him. π
Inside Centre + Ruck = INJURY!
Moral of the story….backline players aren’t forwards, if you want to convert them, you do it at u/14 level. π
FS number 14 scores the simplest of tries after awful defence from the Sharks
Sharks 3 – 18 FS (conversion missed)
Not to worry boys….the Freestate u/21’s are looking very good, so our senior side will be well stocked in years to come π
@FireTheLooser (Comment 161) : π
Sharks backline’s decision making and execution regressing at an alarming rate. Captain needs to settle this side.
Our under 21’s haven’t been great tonight…getting hammered by the Cheetahs…
Potgieter slices through our midfield. Try.
Sharks 3 – 23 FS (Conversion missed)
Damn, Sharks looks to have butchered what could have been a beaut of a try. TMO checking for dangerous tackle.
@vanmartin (Comment 166) : I didn’t see the first half…has Esterhuizen been playing at 7…haven’t picked him up in the second half yet…
Sharks get a penalty, take the lineout.
@pastorshark (Comment 168) : Injured in the first 15 minutes
@pastorshark (Comment 168) : Ah…sorry…just read earlier comments…
Sharks win lineout but spill it in front of the tryline… again
Sharks playing with a bit more cohesion now but it’s still not the type of play that will allow them to catch up in the time left. 58 minutes played
We’ve been pretty swak for the bit I’ve seen!!
Sharks lose a scrum on their own put-in. Markus (out scrumhalf) needs to be heavily fined for that one.
@pastorshark (Comment 174) : Believe it or not, it’s an improvement on our earlier play
Cheetahs have conceded ten penalties to the Sharks’ 7 and yet the Sharks only have 3 points to show for it β
Cheetahs almost break away for their fourth try after a counter from deep in their 22.
@vanmartin (Comment 177) : not looking to good as they make silly mistakes.
Cheetahs keep up the attack and almost dot down under the posts but win a penalty for their efforts.
Sharks steal the ball as they defend the Cheetahs driving maul
The Cheetahs inevitable fourth try comes as Jordaan beats 2 defenders
Sharks 3 – 30 Cheetahs
Handling errors
Sharks 17 – 8 Cheetahs
This is not the stat you want to lead in
5 minutes to go
Jeepers, our boys look a bit clueless…
Full time
Sharks 3 – 30 Cheetahs
Eish, that wasn’t pretty! How didn’t we score at the end there?
Well, JW’s interference has definitely had the desired effect on the team….completely demotivated.
How the heck do we have one of THE lineout jumpers of his time as a coach, and our lineout is this dysfunctional?
Other major issue, we have no more scrumhalves left, they’re all with the seniors.
I’m sticking with Jake White, as I did in 2007 when no one thought he would be able to do it.
So was Esterhuizen crocked because he was forced to play out of position…just wondering.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 191) : ja well yes………….
@JD (Comment 192) : I would be so pissed off…
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 193) : nobody is saying anything so ja who knows?!?!?!
