Sharks flanker Jacques Botes earns an incredible 121st Currie Cup cap for the province tonight, but astute fans won’t be buying into too much of the hype doing the rounds about any record to be broken.
With 27 caps for the Pumas to his name as well, Botes will play in his 148th Currie Cup game this evening, with all and sundry proclaiming that he will become the most capped Currie Cup player ever when he takes the field. Those of us in the know, however, realise that Botes already holds this honour, with his 147 career caps eclipsing the 142 amassed by Free State centre Helgard Muller by a margin of 5. Botes, in other words, became the most capped player ever during last year’s campaign, a fact we pointed out at the time.
In any event, Boots is a stalwart and proud servant of the game and the team and deserves every accolade that comes his way, whether new or old!
Other players celebrating milestones this week are Odwa Ndungane, who earns an 80th Currie Cup cap and Kyle Cooper, who earns a 40th.

Congrats Mr. Botes once again!!!!!
Will surely miss him.
Hope we can give him an awesome parting gift!
@Letgo (Comment 2) : he’s moving in to a hugely important role for us, Letgo…. hope we’ll be able to chat to him about it after the season.
Nudge nudge.
@robdylan (Comment 3) : So when exactly will you be going full “Snowden”, and reveal all the backroom workings at the Sharks? 😉
We could call it SharkiLeaks
@FireTheLooser (Comment 4) : I have too much respect for John Smit.
For the time being anyway.
@robdylan (Comment 3) :
I’m sure I’ll be able to organize something. We’ll wait for after the ticker tape parade in Durban… 🙂
