Midfield reshuffle looms for Sharks

Reports from Durban indicate that Cell C Sharks center S’bura Sithole is in doubt for Friday night’s clash against the Pumas, having picked up a rib injury during the close win over the Cheetahs.

Coach Brad Macleod-Henderson has indicated that the player will need to be “watched”, meaning he has not yet been ruled out of the encounter. The fact that there’s such a short turnaround, though, may mean that he is forced to sit this one out. Indications are at this stage that Heimar Williams could start in the number 12 jersey, with Paul Jordaan shifting to Sithole’s vacated outside center berth, although Williams wasn’t part of the shadow starting team that ran at training yesterday, Nor, strangely enough, was Lionel Cronje, the other man likely to take a step up from the bench into the 12 jersey if required.

Based on the way the Sharks ran at practice, the only change up front should see JC Astle come back in at lock in place of Marco Wentzel , meaning Stephan Lewies may be asked to play off the bench again this week. Cameron Wright and SP Marais, both of whom were below par against the Cheetahs, look set to continue at scrumhalf and fullback respectively this week.

The Sharks will confirm their team tomorrow.

  • So who was at 12?

Or perhaps, rather, who was at 13?

  • I got myself to watch the game again and after a second look at it, we had plenty of chances to score. In the first half alone there were 3 tries begging, but we were just impatient and rushed it. don’t get me wrong we made plenty silly schoolboy errors, but if they can fix it we will be ok. the silly kicking needs to stop and we must keep the ball and not try to be impatient with it.

  • A centre combo of Williams/Jordaan is much more balanced than a combo of Jordaan/Sithole. If you have a silky stepper/speedster at inside centre, then you need a straight running outside centre, same as if you have a hard running inside centre then you need a silky outside centre. It is like having two 5 locks, just not a balanced combo.

Can’t believe SP manages to keep his place. I don’t mind that Wright is getting another chance, but SP has been playing kak for long now.

  • Well what about this…seeing as though he loves kicking lately why not play Fred at 15? Cronje can play 10, Williams 12 and Jordaan 13. Astle back to lock so Oosthuizen back to 7. Van Tonder (who can cover 10), Hoffman and Swiel can bench

  • On unrelated note, this weekend is the final of the Moor Cup and my old club Amanzimtoti is playing in the final against Varsity College. Amanzimtoti beat Crusaders in the semi-final and Varsity College beat College Rovers.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 6) : SP has improved,he has now swopped his dance routine for his,as he showed us on Saterday, his amazing new ‘dazed and amazed’ routine

  • @benji (Comment 9) : Those moves isn’t even good enough to get him on Dancing with the Stars, so I just wish he would stop trying them on the rugby field. I remember on saterday he had the ball, run towards a defender, did his little jig, and still got pummeled in the tackle. I could just imagine the Tjietas player laughing his ass off.

  • @benji (Comment 9) : His new trick is kicking the ball out on the full when we take it back into our 22. He is very good at that!

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 8) : Good on Toti. What is happening with the invincible College Rovers – missing Robert du Preez and his players?

  • If Sithole is out, it surely has to be Heimar at 12 and Cronje continuing to cover both 10/12 from the bench.

If SP isn’t dropped then rotation is clearly not something the current coaching regime is following through with from last year’s successful experiment in CC. While there was argument made against rotation for SR, given the competitive nature of that competition, the fact that we aren’t seeing an indication of rotation in CC, shows that though the experiment was successful, it has been dropped this year.

Jaco van Tonder, Swiel, Fisher, Esterhuizen (specifically the back line it seems), could benefit from time in CC.

As well as the guys that are on the bench week after week that only sees a couple minutes of game time.

    Cronje, Venter, Hoffman…

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 13) : Rovers are still good, but with various Sharks players being distributed through the top KZN teams, they don’t have the majority of quality players any more. The one team that should be deeply troubled though is Bluff Harlequins, they aren’t even a glimpse of their former selves.

  • @Bok-Clyde-Kiwi (Comment 20) : There’s an app called All Rugby SA that runs on just about every cellphone operating system imaginable and carries fixtures, logs and results for everything from u/13 Craven week through to Sevens and Bok games. Best of all it’s free. I keep track of the u/19 and u/21 results on there. Well worth the download.

  • @JD (Comment 1) : I’m sure Jordaan was at 12 and S’bura Sithole was at 13.

A great pity Sithole may be out! He’s an exciting player. He’s also big and strong. I hope Heimar will be good on attack and defence and maybe sneak a try!
