Two Shark changes for Puma clash

JC Astle and Conrad Hoffmann come in for starts as the Cell C Sharks team to take on the Pumas in Nelspruit on Friday night is named.

Astle, the young lock who joined the Sharks from the Boland Cavaliers ahead of the Currie Cup campaign, last started against the self-same opposition in Durban a fortnight ago, wearing the number 4 jersey. He picked up a knock in that game and missed out on last week’s clash against the Cheetahs, but will this week have an even bigger task on his hands as he wears Marco Wentzel’s number 5 jersey – and takes on the role of lineout general.

Stephan Lewies continues his comeback from injury off the bench.

The only change to a back unit that failed to fire against the Cheetahs comes at scrumhalf, where young Cameron Wright is benched in favour of the more experienced Hoffmann. The latter added a fair amount of much-needed calm and composure coming on against the men from Bloemfontein and will need to ensure more of the same in the Mbombela Stadium cauldron, where another sloppy backline performance will surely result in defeat. S’bura Sithole, who was an injury doubt earlier in the week, has been cleared to resume his partnership with Paul Jordaan in midfield.

A switch on the bench sees Lourens Adriaanse picked as the only prop reserve, meaning a rest for Thomas du Toit and another opportunity for Johan Meyer to show what he can do in senior rugby.

Cell C Sharks: 15. SP Marais, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. S’bura Sithole, 12. Paul Jordaan, 11. Tonderai Chavhanga, 10. Fred Zeilinga, 9. Conrad Hoffmann, 8. Tera Mtembu (Capt) , 7. Francois Kleinhans, 6. Jacques Botes, 5. JC Astle , 4. Etienne Oosthuizen, 3. Matt Stevens, 2. Kyle Cooper , 1. Dale Chadwick
Replacements: 16. Franco Marais, 17. Lourens Adriaanse, 18. Stephan Lewies , 19. Johan Meyer , 20. Cameron Wright, 21. Heimar Williams, 22. Lionel Cronje

  • I really think Odwa needs to move out the team and make way for Heimar at 12 with everyone else shifting over in the midfield.

EDIT: Nevermind, answered in the full article.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 1) : A lot of folks seem to be on Odders case this week for some reason when he is not the worst Sharks back by far. I think there’s a much better case to be made to drop SP and move Odwa to fullback.

  • Surely SP Marais cannot get any worse than previous weeks?? Surely!! Not a fan of that loose trio combo im afraid. And Zeilinga better not just kick for the sake of it! Giving the ball to the Pumas will mean a very long day in Nelspruit

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 1) : I disagree. I’d like to see Jordaan at 15 and Heimar coming in at 12. I think that Sithole should stay at 13 as his defence is amazing and I see him as a future Bok 13.

Jordaan has amazing pace and would add a lot joining the line fromfullback and on the counter-attack.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 5) : I have a hunch that Kleinhans will repay the faith placed in him, he just needs a bit more time to settle. Agreed on the kicking comment, the Pumas as team, do seem to take some time to gel during a game but once they do and we gift them ball upon ball at their home ground, they won’t shy away from punishing us.

    Drop him at your peril.

Would rather have liked to see Van Tonder at 15.
Also, what ever happened to Swiel?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 10) : I havnt a problem with Kleinhans, jus the combo of him Botes and Mthembu doesnt really seem to gel. Maybe its taking longer than expected but I havnt seen them link as a unit yet. Kleinhans is good on the ground but we also havnt seen any of that really as i think he trying to be the big tackling 7 flanker. Adn the Pumas have big strong ball carriers so i hope the milk and mild backs that kick the ball away are ready to tackle then as some of them got steamrolled in Durbs

  • @ChrisS (Comment 18) : The approach is probably largely determined by our DOR but I think you nailed it with the “kicking-at-all-costs” part of your comment. Yes, teams with less possession do tend to still win (according to the experts) but they also don’t tend to kick at all costs and there lies our problem. We’re falling back to a kicking game plan when unsure but we’re not executing it in an intelligent manner.

  • I don’t know if you noticed, but even though Botes wore 6 and Kleinhans 7, Botes packed down on the blindside against the Cheetahs. Also, Botes is actually a little taller and 2 KGs heavier than Kleinhans and was used in the ball carrying role much more than Kleinhans. Clearly Kleinhans is the opensider and Botes the blindsider in this combination so why don’t they just wear the correct numbers?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 19) : Go watch the match again, Kleinhans played openside, not blindside, just wore 7, Botes was the blindside and ball carrier, so should have worn 7. You didn’t see the big ball carrier role from Kleinhans because that was not his role on the day, it was the openside/fetcher role.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 41) : Id have to closely watch the game then as i only recall Kleinhans slowing the ball down/turning it over once so if i judge of that he was pretty shite. Botes carried the ball a lot because his work rate is a lot higher than other guys so is only option there most of the time. Watch and u will see the scrummy look for guys but only have Botes as an option a lot of the time! Botes isnt a 7 so then he shouldnt be in the side. As I said i dont have a problem with the individuals just the combo of them.

  • Comment 45, posted at 27.08.14 15:08:05 by SheldonK Reply
  • I think Botes is going to play the way Botes has always played. A real hybrid who certainly doesn’t play the typical “bashing” role of an SA 7 but is a wiley and effective ball carrier all the same.

The challenge is to find a way for Franna to complement him.

  • Comment 46, posted at 27.08.14 15:12:17 by robdylan Reply
  • @robdylan (Comment 46) : Not just Franna but Mthembu as well. Botes has great hands so guys need to run off him because he isnt going to steamroll 5 guys but is going to make a half break and be able to offload.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 45) : By the way, I agree, I am not a fan of this loose combination, but I think Botes can fill the blindside role very well, he does not bash it up, but is a very effective ball carrier, and as you say his workrate is high. I think the weakness right now in the trio is Kleinhans who is not filling the openside role very well (yet).

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 51) : To be honest i think all 3 of the guys have good attributes and for a large part do well on defense. Its just on attack they dont seem to link at all…Botes is always looking to offload so Mthembu and Kleinhans need to get closer and run off him- i think Kleinhans did that once in a game and almost went through to score. Mthembu has also tended to die with the ball lately. I think all 3 have good ‘fetcher’ qualities too so the opposition ball should be a lot slower than it is currently. I just get the feeling that the loose trio like majority of the team just look very unsure of themselves.
