Back three casualties for WP, Bulls

There must be something about the Loftus Versveld turf that makes it particularly hard on ankles – or perhaps the spirit of Achilles lives on in modern rugby players to some extent.

Anyway, at the risk of stretching an already-tired metaphor, both the triumphant WP and somewhat less so Blue Bulls have lost a start player following the weekend’s derby, with wing Seabelo Senatla and fullback Jesse Kriel both ruled out for a fortnight following ankle strains.

Senatla has been a revelation for Allister Coetzee this year, helping to spark the sort of attacking game of which there has been little since from the men in hoops in many, many seasons past. The coach has the option, though, to move Pat Howard to wing and re-introduce Mike van der Spuy at inside centre, given the latter;s recovery from a mild hamstring strain.

The Bulls are less fortunate. While many have lauded the overdue decision to back precocious Kriel at fullback ahead of the ponderous up-and-under king Jurgen Visser, reverting to the latter is an option that won’t be available to coach Frans Ludeke either. Visser has a foot injury which will keep him out of action for the rest of the season.

  • The Bulls have both twins don’t they? Has Dan played fullback?

  • I know its off topic (maybe a little) but when bok players get injured multiple times in one season should they not for safety sake be removed from the bok roster and if they do make a recovery they can spend their recuperative games at the club level. We really must consider their long term careers and not just the glory of one bok coach? Pieter Steph Willem Alberts etc..

  • Rob I don’t recall Pat playing at centre in the previous games so I wouldn’t say he is moved to wing as his been playing there for a while even in the 1st game vs Kings.

  • @Chippa (Comment 3) : fair comment. I just consider him to be a centre first and foremost.

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : What is the feeling on Howard – is he going to make it big or not? (sorry, havent seen much of him lately)
