Jake White walks out on Sharks

The Sharks have just announced that Director of Rugby Jake White is stepping down from his post.

In a very positively-worded release on their website, which you can read here, the Sharks confirm that White will relinquish his role. No timing is mentioned, leading us to conclude that this is with immediate effect.

White himself says little, other than to say that he is “closing this chapter in my life as I believe it is the right time to do so”. Very open-ended indeed.

The timing of this move plunges the Sharks into coaching chaos ahead of Super Rugby next year.

Rest assured, fans, we’ll get to the bottom of this mess and reveal what’s really going on.

  • Whaaaaaa? That’s just great.

Really? Think he got a world cup gig somewhere? White is burning bridges at an amazing rate.

And the CC coaches are a bit green to get the SR gig.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Jimmy Stonehouse in charge at the sharks though.

  • So hows those structures going he was putting in place….more like his future career structures. Good riddence and hope he never comes back! Dont need people like that involved as they only in it for themselves. Always knew his lifespan here was limited, just didnt think this limited. So basically Sharks rugby wasted a year. Eish John im glad im not you at the next shareholder meeting…

  • Just throwing a guess around guys, but isn’t Jake perhaps at the centre of the current state of unhappiness from certain players? Look, I know the coach will never be everyone’s favorite, but something is off here.. Seems there is definitely more to the story than simply “a chapter that has been closed”.

  • One good thing is that he’s left after the SR season. Now to figure out who the hell is going to be head coach before the new season starts! Anyone have any ideas?

I don’t think the BMH is going to get the gig as head coach. Not there yet.

Who’s left? Stonehouse? Mallet is a no go, with his history. Who else?

I’m not too broken up – think we needed his pragmatism and structure to start with, but 2007 rugby is not gonna win us the tournaments and fans.

  • To be fair JW’s game plan very quickly got the maximum effect out of a team that struggles to play attacking rugby (because of the inability to hang on to the ball long enough, and not really many ideas on how to unlock decent defenses). However that plan may get you into the semi’s but it won’t get you the super trophy.

So I am not terribly disappointed to see the back of Jake (although it is not a very professional way to go about your business IMO). It is obviously a major disruption.

  • JW had great ideas but they could only become great when they were executed. We always knew he was leaving and he was open about this in the media.

Let him be gone! We achieved no success under his tenure and his disruption set the Sharks back as a experienced coach will certainly do his own thing and start all over again.

This all becomes John’s problem as he has to find a S15 coach in a very short time. There is no way the MBH and his merry men can coach our S15 side. John Mitchell is the only interim option. We are also desperately short of experienced senior players for the S15, as 20+ players left during JW tenure.

Over to you John. Please recruit somebody that can develop the huge talent we have and build a sustainable SHARKS family !!!

  • Hang on. Why can’t our current guys coach the SR team? They might be pretty damn green, but they aren’t bad and have a year experience. And with Kayser, albert van der berg and Jacques Botes helping out in the younger levels, we are building a solid coaching base over the long term.

I won’t mind seeing a young coaching team have a crack at Super Rugby. Maybe coaching to the strengths of the players in stead of coaching a style and sticking to it?

  • This makes me a little sad.

I really can’t see that it is better for the Sharks to have JW for 1 season only. The contract should have stated that he has to stay at least for 2 years, until after RWC. I can’t see the point of him leaving now. Why would you want to get involved with any team just before the RWC? This closes his chances of getting a head coach position after 2015.

  • Lets see who could possibly be the next coach.
example in following format eg. Jake White = Snake

    Mallet = Player Issues
    Venter = Too Busy
    John Mitchel = Player Issues
    Jimmy Stonehouse = Employed
    Robbie Deans = Employed
    John Plumtree = Employed
    Chris Boyed = Employed
    Gert Small = Employed

This pretty much leaves us with the following option.
    BMH

  • We should get someone who will be committed to the Sharks. I really didn’t think he would leave this fast. Really disappointing!

I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t want to be a part of a great team like the Sharks and be a part of building a legacy.

Unless Jake feels ready to retire and just wanted another short international stint. It such a temporary job, with the Sharks he could have left a legacy, now his just the chump who only ever did anything for himself… and I’m a huge JW follower!

I think Venter would be great, but it would never happen.

I don’t like any of the other options.

Mallet had very strange ideas when he was Bok coach
John Mitchel could be an option, but I don’t like the whole player unhappiness. I thought he did well with the Lions.
It’s too early to say how Jimmy Stonehouse would to at SR level.
Robbie Deans failed with Australia. He was good with a strong Crusaders team, but couldn’t step out of that environment and find success.
John Plumtree was a decent coach but already proved not good enough for SR.
    I don’t know Chris Boyd
Gert Small looks set where he is and making an impact.

    What about –

    Dick Muir

Deysel was one of the Vice Captains and played plenty.

Tim Whitehead yes, but I think Jake’s concern that he his too slow, is a legitimate one.

Daniel is 29 and was probably always going to leave soon.

    Same with Deysel.

I know Jake wanted Bresler to stay and also held McLeod in high regard, although he preferred Reinach.

    Who else?

Tim Swiel is also the only young guy that hasn’t performed yet. Lewies were given opportunity and performed. Sithole has been a revelation of sorts.

I don’t think he did bad things while he was with the Sharks, I just think it’s very disappointing that he wouldn’t want to stay and see what he can achieve with the Sharks.

I get it though, you have to take your opportunities and I’m sure something better came up. Still disappointing.

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 160) : @Culling Song (Comment 162) : In fact, you guys should prepare a massive offer for Ludeke, Callie Visagie, Jonno Ross and the bloke that played at 10 for you at the start of SR, and jettison the dead wood (like Jessie Kriel). And if said dead wood happens to wind up at the Sharks, oh well, we’ll just have to grit our teeth and bear it…

  • @John Galt (Comment 155) :

He left because he wasn’t rated as a captain or a starter by the new coach. I never really rated him that highly either, I don’t think that makes me a P%*$. If the players that didn’t get game time were the ones that were unhappy, it is 100% understandable. Keegan was Plumtree’s pet. He really didn’t deserve the captaincy or even his spot in the team there for a while, but then regained some form closer to the end of 2012.

Oh and of course senoir players will kick against the changes of a new regime… there will be plenty more changes in the Sharks union, some will bend and go with the change, others will leave.

I think it’s good that players are asked to spend more time at the park, as most of them go home and play video games, by their own admission (“Keegan Daniel” being one of those who have stated that he does so).

Commitment and hard work is never a bad thing, I won’t fault Jake for that. There will always be a few that’s unhappy, but it seems that the core has stayed and still seems quite content with the situation at the Sharks.

    Let it go Letgo.

There was a massive exodus from the Sharks and I have heard first hand that Jake was the sole reason for this.

‘Oh and of course senoir players will kick against the changes of a new regime’
Really?! I didn’t see any kicking and screaming when Venter took over. That’s an absurd thing to say.

  • @Letgo (Comment 166) :

Not everyone that would want to leave can leave.
There are only a limited number of opportunities available and some players would want to stay put for perosnal reasons, no matter how much they disliked management. Those with a young family, other busienss interests in Durbs etc.

ITs the same as any other job – lots of people may want to move, but a much smaller number are actually able or willing to make a move.

  • @John Galt (Comment 168) : @VinChainSaw (Comment 170) : I have to agree with Letgo though… who exactly was this “massive exodus” of Sharks players that JW actually caused… and more to the point, did anyone who left leave us with a massive hole to fill?

The only one I can think of was Deysel… but he was probably going to go anyway. He is getting on in years and has been pretty injury prone in recent times.

  • The main thing that confuses me… is that if JW (as a Saffer) could make a go of it at the Brumbies, to the point where it seems they were very unhappy to see him go… then how could it be that he pissed off so many people in Durban? The Aussies are notorious whingers, and surely they would have kicked up a huge stink with JW if they didn’t like his style?

I’m wondering more if it isn’t that the Sharks are rotten through and through, from the bottom to the top. Perhaps too many people were too used to getting things their way (ie whether that be senior players who did what they liked or board members who took money when it pleased them)

From my experience, when a bunch of slackers are suddenly forced to step-up by a “new broom sweeping clean”, that’s when the whinging and “unhappiness” really starts. I think the Sharks are long overdue for a major overhaul… my only fear is that John Smit is perhaps not experienced enough to do that by himself.

What to make of it then, when the “new broom” is the one to leave.

That the “slackers” are firmly in control, ruining the Sharks? The rot then, must go much deeper.
Brain v Zyl pushed out in a nefarious coup? John Smit hired as a patsy to deflect attention away from “He who wields real power”? The forensic audit a sham designed to Jang Sung-taek an enemy?

  • But more seriously, I would strongly advise the Sharks to forego appointing another superstar coach. It’s very rare for coaches to enjoy out sized success with more than one team. Their previous feats always had an element of luck, but it’s exceeding rare for successful individuals to acknowledge or account for it…..so they inevitably turns into very expensive duds.
The next superstar coach is an unknown today. Look for someone with solid fundamentals and experience as an assistant.

Appoint based on character, character AND character.

  • Maybe JW was able to implement all the structures necessary in record time, and therefore he is off….somebody had to play the bad guy to rid the surfer union of all the rot, he was the willing candidate and also the fall-guy.

JW leaves, everybody is happy, but all his structures and newly instilled work ethic stays with the Sharks….mission accomplished.

Now adjust the game plan to suit modern-day running-winning rugby (which seems to be BMH’s mission), and presto. πŸ™‚

I think that may have been exactly it, too many people used to getting things their own way. JW would not have stood for that.

The fact that he is leaving might mean that the change was to hard to conform to and him leaving, is an indication that these people will again go back to getting what they want.

Unless there really is a better opportunity for him and he is leaving by choice.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 193) : Bismarck’s sole lineout problem is that he throws the ball in too softly, hence opposition can compete as the ball is in the air for so long. He just needs to learn how to throw in quicker…much like those lines he throws out in his pump adverts…
