Flyhalf Innocent Radebe stepped up to kick a last minute penalty to give his Sharks under 19 side a crucial 24-12 win over their Kings counterparts in Durban on Saturday morning.

In a see-sawing game in which the Sharks battled to ever get ahead in any meaningful sense, Radebe’s nerve was needed to clinch victory after a late Kings try and penalty had closed an 8-point gap and leveled matters once more.

After Kings flyhalf Garrick Mattheus had put his team on the board early via a penalty, unstoppable Sharks flanker Jean-Luc du Preez scored the opening try, with Radebe converting for a 7-3 lead. There was no further score in the first half, leaving matters evenly poised at the break.

EP fullback Malcolm Jaer brought his side within a point with an early second-half penalty, before Sharks winger Spark Ngcobo extended the lead again with a try, converted again by Radebe. The pattern continued, as first EP scored (through flanker Tyler Paul) to get back within one and then the Sharks struck back, with Radebe himself netting the third and once more establishing an 8-point gap. Kings winger Lindelwe Zungu struck back virtually from the next kick-off, though, with Jaer adding a final penalty to even matters at 21-all, before Radebe’s late breakthrough.

The win secured fourth position on the log for the Sharks, who now have a five-point advantage and a game in hand over the Kings, who are fifth.

Sharks under 19 (24): Tries Jean-Luc du Preez, Sphamandla Ngcobo, Innocent Radebe. Conversions Radebe (3). Penalty Radebe
EP Kings under 19 (21): Tries Tyler Paul, Lindelwe Zungu. Conversion Malcolm Jaer. Penalties Jaer (2), Garrick Mattheus

  • Real pity there we a few missed kicks, semi final hopes done and dusted, but well done to the young Sharkies. Cruel 2 weeks for the men, losing courtesy of last minute penalties on both occasions

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Certainly considering they will take on Bulls or WP, the strongest sides this year.
