The Sharks have released an injury report, confirming very bad news for centre Paul Jordaan.
Our earlier information was right and Jordaan did indeed suffer a dislocated fracture of the hip. He’s already had an operation to mend the damage and will now spend six long months on the sidelines.
The other casualty from the Lions game is hooker Kyle Cooper, who will miss the trip to play Western Province this week due to an ankle strain. He should, though, be back in time for the semi final.

Not good at all
Bad luck Paul!!!!! and every time when he needs to get game time!!!
A Late tackle behind a man is disgraceful, and yet this player is not even cited, Jordaan is lucky his spine was not broken.
Many years ago tony Watson’s career was ended by dirty play with uli Schmidt on speed jumping into him with his knee up and crushed his cheek bone, 2 weeks ago Mtembu was kneed down in the same way as Watson, Mtembu is just lucky to not have the Bulls players knee hitting him on the cheek or he too would have been out of a rugby career.
For me the players are being taught techniques that should not be allowed in rugby.
A defending player is jumping straight up, An attacking player is coming at speed and if allowed to lift his knee into the defender there will always only be one winner.
@sharks_lover (Comment 3) : all great in theory, but in practice, the tackle wasn’t late.
watched it over and over again. There is just no way, watching it in real time, that you can objectively say the tackle was late. Sure, a slow-mo makes it look bad, but in real time (and it all happened blindingly fast) it’s impossible to deduce that Kriel intentionally committed himself to the tackle after the ball had already left Jordaan’s hands.
@robdylan (Comment 5) : Completely agree. Whats your opinion on Esterhuizen’s tackle? IMO neither were penalties.
Very sad to loose Paul.On a totally different note, does anyone know if Francois Steyn will play super rugby for the sharks again in 2015?I will be really disappointed if we don’t see him again!
@tigershark (Comment 8) : I was under the impression that we have lost him for the forseeable future
@gregkaos (Comment 7) : agree. Thought that Pro got the first one wrong, then tried to compensate by calling the second one wrong as well.
@tigershark (Comment 8) : yes, his agent confirmed to me a few weeks ago that he’s coming back for Super Rugby in 2015.
@robdylan (Comment 11) : Well that’s great news.I know he has a bit of an attitude problem, the way he walked out on the national team and all, but I wish he would just go on his knees and ask HM’s forgiveness, sort out his contracts and get back in the saddle.We really need him in 2015.Especially with SBW back in union.
Nobody feeling the same way?
Agree with Rob on this 1, tackle wasn’t quite late đŸ˜†
@robdylan (Comment 11) : glad to hear. He could be a very good mentor for André.
@robdylan … the difference between esterhuizens is paul jordaan ran 4 steps after the pass and slowed down before he was tackled. the lions player knew the ball was gone – he had the best view of the pass but committed to the tackle to remove jordaan from play. esterhuizen completed a stride and made the tackle.
@byron (Comment 16) : No, sorry. That is completely incorrect. Go watch it again. That simply is not what happened.
@byron (Comment 16) : With Rob one this one. I have an HD recording of the game. Looks bad in slow mo but for once we can point to Paul’s quick handling as the culprit. By the time the ball left his hands the tackler was already way past the point of no return. Reminds me of Bissie’s tackle on Carter to be honest. Looks bad in slow mo, looks even worse because the player is blind-sided.
Gutted for the bloke.
As far as Steyn goes, Esterhuizen is making a name for himself; with any luck, the competition will push Steyn to hit top form. Also would help is Frans wasn’t required to shift between 12 and 10 every other game.
So my question then is at what point is a tackle considered started? I have watched it a couple of times and i come to a different conclusion every time. It might just be camera angles.
@byron (Comment 20) : Byron I am kinda with you on this one. If it was not late why was it penalised?
Because that is exactly what it was penalised for,
Poor Jordaan, catches so many breaks none of which are the right type.
Its an unfortunate injury…but this is a contact sport so its the nature of the game. Nothing malicious in that tackle…was just a big hit. Hope the guy has a speedy recovery.
Eish bad luck for Paul, I thought he was just finding some form – get well soon boet!!! His pace will be missed..
Geez, I feel sorry for Paul, being blindside tackled is never fun, thats how my knee got buggered. I hope he gets well soon, was starting too look like a real threat again. But I am salivating at the prospect of a Esterhuizen/Sithole combo in the midfield with Tondie and Mvovo on the wings.
@sharks_lover (Comment 21) : it was penalised because the ref overreacted to the fact that there was an injury and quite simply got the call wrong. Just as he did with Esterhuizen’s supposedly late tackle a bit later.
@Here be dragons (Comment 19) : we had a bad injury run at 10.
Next year, with Pat,Lionel and Fred all there, I seriously doubt Frans will need to play 10.
@robdylan (Comment 27) : Is andre an out and out 12 or can he play 13 as well?Just thinking of a Steyn/Esterhuizen centre combo for next year.
@tigershark (Comment 28) : Jordaan and Sithole cover 13 so let André play 12 with some mentoring from Frans. Will only be a good thing for André to be an understudy for Frans.
@JD (Comment 29) : I agree, it will just be nice to have two big centres and keep the little guys for the wings.
@tigershark (Comment 28) : no, I wouldn’t. I don’t think Andre has the pace to play 13.
@robdylan (Comment 31) : He cant be slower than Robbie Freuan?
@tigershark (Comment 30) : and don’t forget Heimar is also there.
@tigershark (Comment 30) : You shouldn’t refer to Sithole as little. Not to his face anyway đŸ˜‰
@vanmartin (Comment 34) : you can do it if are brave, stupid or very fast!!!!!!
@JD (Comment 35) :
You’d have to be Usain Bolt fast to gain any meaningful lead.
@vanmartin (Comment 36) : LOL!!!!!!
@vanmartin (Comment 34) : Funny that you say that.I walked past paul and heimar the other day and I was surprised how small they were.I’ve always thought I was to small for pro rugby but they were even smaller than me.I just think the bigger players really do better these days especially at center.
@tigershark (Comment 38) : sometimes size helps but it’s not the be all and end all. Heimar is a very good 12 and I would pick him for the Sharks.
Can’t wait for this team to run out for the Sharks in the Super 15.
1 Jannie,2 Bismark,3 Thomas duToit,4 P.S.D.T,5 Lewies,6 Alberts,7 Coetzee,8 Mtembu,
9 Wright,10 Lambie,12 Frans Steyn,13 Esterhuizen,11 Sithole,13 Chavanga,15 Mvovu.
Al healthy and firing,we could take out the All Blacks.
@The hound (Comment 40) : Interesting…and your bench? (I like how you use the 6 & & numbering)
@SheldonK (Comment 41) : Sorry 14 Chavangu.
Bench,
Beast,Kyle,Adriaanse,Oosthuizen,Reinarch,Zeilenger,Jordaan
@The hound (Comment 42) : No Kanko or Pieterson that are back for Super rugby? Just curious. Also no Matt Stevens? I know ur feeling reg Reinach so wont comment.
@SheldonK (Comment 43) : Spoilt for choice we are,Kanko wouldn’t make the run on for me,and Oosthuizen covers 4,5,6, 7, and must also cover 8.
Forgot about J.P.,he must make it to the run on in preference to who,11,13, or14..
I know Matt Stevens covers both sides,but in Super Rugby you have to have a full front row on the bench anyway so no he wouldn’t make it.
@The hound (Comment 44) : For some reason i hav doubts about Alberts fitness etc so Mthembu and Kanko covering 7/8 with Oosthuizen bench. Also remember its 23 man squads so we allowed another loosie/lock to bench. Id leave the backline bench as is but probably Pieterson for Chavanga to start. Lionel Cronje would push Zeilinga for a bench spot but needs to up his goal kicking %
IMO JPP ahead of Chavanga as a starter. At least the JPP that have shaken off his early season sleep walking routine.
