For all our readers who like to use Android mobile phones or tablets to read the site, our official Sharksworld for Android App is now available, free of charge, in the Google Play Store.

A big thank you to all who helped with beta testing and fine-tuning of the app. Please could I ask everyone who is currently using an older version of it to uninstall that and rather get the new 1.96 version from the link below:

The App support all Android version from 4.0 up (although if you’re not running at least 4.3, you really should be!) and has been tested on a variety of phone and tablet screen sizes.

Please do rate the App on the Play Store if you find it useful and let me know of any problems or suggestions.

  • What would be involved in getting an app for other non-android phones and tablets up and running?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 16) : before I do that, I’m trying to get my head around the terms and conditions you need to comply with in order to actually distribute an app via the Apple App Store. These guys make the old secret police look rather tame.

  • The problem with Apple is that they make the assumption that they “own” everyone who uses one of their devices. It’s all about “our users” and how app developers have to provide what’s best for them.

That make sense if you’re not starting with a user base of your own. I mean, my perspective is that you guys are “my users” and I want to give you what you want. The fact that many of you choose to use an Apple device means that I have an obligation to provide an app on that device – and who the hell are Apple to tell me I can’t do so?

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 17) : Main problem with WP, has been since the start, is apps, you just can’t compare the Windows Store to Play Store or the Apple one, but it’s improving every day. It has everything you will actually need, but is lacking some in the ‘wants’ and variety departments.

Many of the other issues have been addressed with the 8.1 update, and if you’re curious, there are even ways to enable Cortana beta in SA (she’s not officially available here yet). I have and she’s great! Even in her beta state she’s already heaps ahead of Siri. And sniffing out the Halo references in her responses is a lot of fun!

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 31) : they’re getting a bit better…. Microsoft has realised that lock-in is a bad idea so are trying to be a bit more open. I just had a real problem trying to install the development tool you need to use on my windows laptop.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 30) : They managed to hire some people in the 90’s who were very good at convincing OEM’s to sign exclusivity agreements. That combined with companies adopting MS Office on a grand scale ensured that even in this Google-dominated era, a heck of a lot of PC’s still run Windows. My earlier comments were slightly tongue in cheek to a degree, I actually find Windows 8.1 pretty enjoyable to use.

  • @robdylan (Comment 35) : Unfortunately, as the app uses google play services, I can’t get the notifications. The app itself runs very smoothly on both my Z10 and Z30, as BB OS10 supports the andriod runtime.

I have heard that you can get the google play services up and running on BB OS10, but I haven’t bothered yet. The alternative of course, is that you could use the free software Blackberry provides to port your app over to Blackberry. It doesn’t really involve any changes or coding, and it will then run as a native app on Blackberry and available in Blackberry app world as well 😉

  • @AlienArmy (Comment 43) : yup…. that’s on the list, but since the app in its current form will at least run (mostly) on BB10, doing a full port is low on the list
