The Sharks under 19 side may have been beaten in Cape Town on Saturday, but the narrow margin of defeat must all the same have given them some confidence ahead of Saturday’s semi-final showdown.

Conceding a late try to go down 20-27, the side didn’t quite manage to achieve their objective of claiming a second big scalp in succession, but will have known ahead of the game that fourth spot – and a trip to Loftus to take on the Blue Bulls in the semi – was their guaranteed lot.

Province ran out to a good lead of 17-3 in the first half, with only an Innocent Radebe penalty to show for the Sharks against two tries to the hosts. The comeback was good, though, with Sparks Ngcobo and Matt Reece-Edwards scoring either side of half time to bring the visitors level. Radede and opposite number Ernst Stapelberg traded penalties once more to leave matters locked at 20-all, before Province centre Heinrich Buhr scored to break the deadlock.

While no Sharks age-group side in living memory has prevailed in an away knock-out game at Loftus, at least this year’s bunch have the memory of a fine 52-7 win over the self-same opposition just a fortnight ago on which to fall back. The team will certainly need to put in a far stronger performance, though, if that result is to be repeated away from home.

The game takes place at Loftus Versveld at 1pm on Friday, with Free State hosting Western Province in the other semi-final on Saturday. We’d like to wish Jim Fleming, Ruan Kramer and the boys all the best for the big game.

Western Province under 19 (27): Tries Ernst Stapelberg, Ryan Oosthuizen, Eduard Buhr. Conversions Stapelberg (2), Brandon Thomson. Penalties Stapelberg (2).
Sharks under 19 (20): Tries Sphamandla Ngcobo, Matthew Reece-Edwards. Conversions Innocent Radebe (2). Penalties Radebe (2).
