Unchanged Lions

Johan Ackermann has kept his starting team unchanged for Saturday’s Currie Cup semi-final against the Sharks in Johannesburg.

Ackermann has again picked Jaco van der Walt at fullback, leaving general Marnitz Boshoff to control matters at flyhalf against the side that narrowly beat his charges in Durban a fortnight ago. The only change to the side that recorded a big win over Free State last week sees Kwagga Smith come onto a rejigged bench that features only one replacement prop in Julian Redelinghuys.

Smith is a versatile player whose sevens experience allows him to fill in as a three-quarter replacement if needed, in addition to covering the back row.

Golden Lions: 15 Jaco van der Walt, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Howard Mnisi, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Marnitz Boshoff, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Warren Whiteley (captain), 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Martin Muller, 3 Ruan Dreyer, 2 Robbie Coetzee, 1 Schalk van der Merwe.
Replacements: 16 Armand van der Merwe, 17 Julian Redelinghuys, 18 Willie Britz, 19 Warwick Tecklenburg, 20 Kwagga Smith, 21 Mark Richards, 22 Harold Vorster

  • @SheldonK (Comment 1) : Ja if they can keep all these players they could win a couple of games next year.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : Hopefully more than 7

Apart from Willie Britz (Cheetahs) and Kwagga smith (Blitzbokke) all the players have signed for next year as far as I know, with some Pumas players to be added – Faf de Klerk, Stefan Watermeyer, Corne Fourie, Giant Mtyanda (hopefully), etc.

  • @JD (Comment 5) : We can only hope for the best. A massive injury toll knocked us back in 2012 after winning the Currie Cup and it’s not a given that a good CC season is followed by a good SR season but Ackers have worked hard to build a depth of similar quality in the squad so that back up players can step in without much adjustment

  • @SharksRTB (Comment 7) : I know…but a few Pumas players added and makes for a decent side. Dont think they will win Super rugby but can at least compete well
