Plenty of movements (but none to Durbs?)

For the first time in living memory, we find ourselves in the middle of “silly season” with nary a sniff of any transfer, whether big or small, in the direction of the Sharks.

Now there has, of course, once again been major upheaval in the coaching ranks which, I’m sure, leads to uncertainty. Changes at the top tend to imply changes in strategy and without a strategy defined and in place, it’s very difficult to procure. While it hasn’t been said in so many words, one would expect that Gary Gold, as Director of Rugby, would have the final say on player contracts and until he officially takes office, I would imagine it’s pretty difficult for the Sharks to make any big moves. That said, the clock is running down and while there appear to be rather slim pickings on the market in general, even those are running out fast.

The Bulls have both won and lost – in the sense that they’ve snagged three big names from the Cheetahs, but have lost twice as many from their disgruntled junior ranks as a result. The Lions and Western Province have both profited from yet another Loftus exodus, bolstering their stocks further, while there’s also the inevitable movement of players from minor unions towards the Cheetahs going on.

Now, we will do a more detailed analysis of the Sharks’ options later, but from a 1000 feet, there do appear to be gaps in the squad in a number of positions, with 4-lock, blindside flank and outside center areas in particular where depth is not what we’d like it to be. Perhaps the reason, though, that we’re not hearing of any movements, whether purported or real, is simply that there isn’t anyone suitable on the market to cover any of these positions? While I’m sure the options are being pored over thoroughly within the corridors of power, I’m really battling to pick a decent shortlist in any of those spots, considering that the majority of the guys we would want are tied up in existing contracts anyway.

Perhaps the answer here lies within the structures? It could be a good thing to have a few “thin spots” in the squad for 2015 since it creates the need to work with the players we have and develop them further. For too many years, the prevailing approach in Durban has been to buy senior journeymen, rather than give promising youth an extended run, but hell, if the Lions, Cheetahs and Stormers can afford to take the risk with untried players in Super Rugby when the need arises, why can’t we?

Maybe, just maybe, this dearth of new players coming in could be just the tonic that our squad needs, if the message that it sends to the existing players is “we believe in you – now go out and prove us right”?

I am a bit worried about our back three maybe we should look at the Leopaards πŸ˜• or entice Dan Kriel back home as it seems he is not in the Bulls plans,he started on the bench for the u/21 ❓

    15 Steyn
    14 JpP
    13 Jordaan
    12 Esterhuizen
    11 Mvovo
    10 Lambie
    09 Reinach

    21 Ungerer
    22 Sbura
    23 Fisher ( covers 13 and 15 and wing )

I take everything from 24 with a 5kg bag of salt, but it was corroborated on Sharks website.

I don’t know if I am happier with Gold as the coach as with BMH as the coach. Probably much of a muchness.

Deep down I was still hoping they would contract an out and out head coach, knowing that both yourself and Morne mentioned that there isn’t any money, firstly, and no coaches around to fill that type of spot.

I do hear your concern, though. Again, it’s not much of a counter-argument, but Jake White had all the “head coach” credentials in the world and failed. Maybe a guy with slightly less start quality, who is open to other ideas, might do better?

  • @robdylan (Comment 53) : Cool. Thanks. I’m a bit worried about the Sharks. I am not convinced that our management understand that the game requires game breakers, guys that can create tries from nothing. Province and the Lions seems to be on the right track and have been very innovative in their approach. For example, they have unique arrangements with SARU with regards to the explosive creative guys that play 7’s. If we are serious about taking our game to the next level we need to have a serious look into the guys we recruit. Bothma is a step in the right direction. Let me wait for Gold to outlay his plan. 17 November is too long to wait though. We need to be bold and think outside the box, that thinking outside the box could for example getting someone like Paul Treu to help our guys manufacture tries, get someone that specializes on the breakdown to help our guys recycle the ball quicker.

    15 Mvovo !!

I know Mvovo can t kick us out of trouble, but didn t Jordaan use to play 10? Surely he s quick enough to fall back and help out?

Don t ask me about the forwards though, last time I checked we were in turbo reverse in a scrum against the lions. Don t know what we re gonna do there…

Would be interesting to see an article listing our possible players for next year. Even though it s early, I admit I lost track of who went where.

  • I’m all for “giving the youngsters a chance” but I agree, it is Super rugby after all and the Sharks hold ambitions of winning the damn thing. I suspect to do that we will still need to sign at least a trio of “big names” to blend experience and proven match winning ability with the vigour and zeal of youth.

I also don’t understand how the Sharks can have gone from wealthiest rugby team in the country to paupers as is being suggested? Coaches have come and gone in the past, this has never affected the Sharks’ ability to attract and sign up big name players.

Nowt to do with the Sharks but was anyone else a little envious seeing the adoration and praise of the All Blacks in Chicago last night? At one stage the match commentators suggested the All Blacks were the most famous sports brand in the entire world. The rugby they put on was extraordinary. 61,000 fans appreciated it. I doubt the Springboks would sell as many seats in the US.

Although to Meyer’s credit, he is clearly trying to move away from the dour, boring, kick stereotype the Boks have become synonymous with. Love to see the Boks become more ruthless and entertaining.

As for SA playing in the US, the last time that happened was in 2001, and I was at that match. Played in Houston because that is where most SA expats lived, and even there, only drew 30,000 in the stadium, of which about 25,000 were South Africans. So you are spot on with your analysis of the AB vs US match.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 69) : The thing that worries me is that we end up very short at wing if we use lwazi at 15

  • @Feather (Comment 71) : LOL interesting, I was there, announcement at the match was that there were 22,000 tickets sold and just under 30,000 attendance. I didn’t count though. πŸ˜‰

  • @robdylan (Comment 72) : Well, considering that Jordaan and Sithole can not play 13 at the same time, either one is a very good wing as well. Chavanga while injury prone is also a very good wing. I am not sure how much Odders has left in the tank, but you know how highly I think of him. Quite simply we can fill 11, 13 and 14 with any of JPP, Sithole or Jordaan. I don’t know, I think we are actually quite well stocked at wing. The reason I like Mvovo at 15 is he is much more involved, and I believe the more he gets the ball, the more likely he is to make something happen. My one criticism of Mvovo at wing has always been he does not “look for enough work” in the same way Odders does for example. At 15 he is brought into the game much more. Even SP can play wing, in fact I would rather he played wing than 15. I think Jordaan is probably a better wing than 13 as well, although he is an excellent centre as well. I think we have lots of options at wing, and are in dire need of an effective 15, Mvovo fills that void nicely in my opinion.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 74) : ja must agree with the comment on Sharks fullback options! !!! Playing Mvovo is not ideal but he is the best option in the current squad.

  • @Feather (Comment 71) : You may want to be careful with the information on Wiki for that match or for that tour in 2001. They show SA as winning all their matches when they clearly lost to England 29-9 on that tour.

  • @robdylan (Comment 72) : Jordaan and JPP on the wing are the way to go . . .

I`m just worried about clearance kicks with Mvo at 15.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 79) : I may be wrong here (after all my brain is old and tired), but I recall that Mvovo would get decent length on his kicks, so it would seem to me that with a little work on his kicking game, his clearance kicks may not be a problem. But as I have said in an earlier post, you are talking about a past hooker/prop trying to analyze fullback play. πŸ˜‰

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 56) : A Super Rugby pack of Beast, Bissie, Jannie, PSdT, Lewies/Oosthuizen, Marcel, Alberts and Kanko/Tera, could be formidable. The only one in that pack to play regularly in the Currie Cup in 2014 was Tera, so hard to compare what happened against the Lions to Super Rugby. With The Tank/Chadwick, Cooper and Adriaanse, we have an excellent front row on the bench. I am honestly not sure why so many think our situation is so dire, other than that is the way of Sharks supporters. We have to be about the most pessimistic bunch at times. Considering all the upheaval and the problems caused by JW, I actually think we are in pretty good shape come Super Rugby 2015.

  • @robdylan (Comment 81) : Crap. Already forgot about that . . .

Rob you gonna write an article listing our possible options sometime?

Well if not Jordaan on the wing . . . Who?
Chavanga is injury prone as well he`s not a long term Super 15 prospect.

Odwa is safe but won`t we need more pace in Super 15?

    On a different note.

Since we don`t have rugby and I`ve never been a big cricket supporter, is there some way I can watch NFL in South Africa?

  • Yeah, fullback is an issue, I agree.
Mvovo at FB does allow Jordaan and Sithole to both start, but this whole Jordaan on the wing thing hasn’t been tried as far as I can remember. He was hot and cold this season, but I still think once given a solid run he can be a very good centre, as he has shown at times.

Wonder what will be done with Tyler Fisher, think he started as a centre, but if I can recall correctly, he was being considered more as a fullback option.
