Dreyer gets Bok nod

Lions prop Ruan Dreyer has been called up to join the Springboks, as injury cover ahead of their two remaining end-of-year tests against Italy and Wales.

Stalwart tighthead Jannie du Plessis was forced from the field after around an hour of Saturday’s test against England, having sustained what looked like a hamstring injury. While he’s not yet been ruled out for the remainder of the tour, it certainly looks as though he’ll miss this weekend’s game in Padua.

Coenie Oosthuizen is likely to step into the void at tighthead this weekend, with another Lions man, Julian Redelinghuys likely to make a test debut off the bench. It’s unlikely that Dreyer will get any game time on tour, but if he does, it should come in the game against Wales, when a number of front line Boks will be unavailabe due to European or Japenses club commitments.

  • I hope Heyneke picks Redelinghuys this weekend. Can’t see Coenie being able to keep the Italian scrum at bay.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : Yeh look it may not be true but just from what people are reading into how HM responds to questions regarding Jannie etc it seems that way.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 3) : Maybe it will be a good thing if we are under pressure in the scrums against Italy. Can only be good for our young 9’s to play under pressure in a test match.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 6) : I think the young 9s would much prefer quick clean ball but yes i agree 🙂 Would love to see Kriel get a shot…im guessing Coetzee has to play as no other loosie in the squad plays to the ball like him

  • Did anybody watch the Argies vs Italy game? The scrum battle must have been epic.

  • Well, I did call for both Lions tightheads to be taken up into the Bok setup…and now that’s happened. I’m looking forward to seeing how they go. I am just not convinced that Coenie is a tighthead…
