NZ had Auz refs officiating some of their games. We seem to get the worst of the worst.

  • This tour taught me that Coenie can’t scrum and weakens our pack. Oupa Mohoje is useless and does not deserve to be in the Bok team, in his 7 games he has done nothing but put pressure on Coetzee and Vermeulen to do his job and theirs, we looked better when Schalk Burger and Nizaam Carr replaced him in the games during the tour, Francois Hougaardt is good 1 game, terrible the next 50, JDV is way past his prime and should retire, Serfontein is not an outside centre and Heyneke Meyer has completely lost the plot.

  • @Mutley (Comment 102) : Well articulated.
The tour proved to me that HM is a weak, conservative coach who obstinately tries to preserve his own records at the cost of the team.
Only a complete idiot would perservere with Houghaardt game after game,a junior school coach would have realised after the first game that the Coennie experiment wasn’t going to work.
But then this the man that relenlesslly played Spies and Morne game after game.
The only thing learnt on this tour is that this man has no plan B,and his plan A is an open book to the rest of the world.
We are lucky we played England and Italy and not France and Scotland,or else we would have gone down 4 love.
This crap about the players being tired is such hogwash, none of them played for 5 weeks prior to the tour.

Antway if it did not happen Im sure it would have been in Meyers plans to have someone, somewhere ,somehow do some damage to De Villiers just so that Matfield could take over the captaincy for the WC. πŸ˜‰ 😈

  • This NH tour was definitely not a success…even the 2 wins were not a result of good rugby from the Boks. The NH now has some very intelligent coaches and players and they have quickly learnt what the Boks do and have targeted our 1 off forwards that they know wont pass the ball..they gang tackle and then dont roll away which the ref seems to allow and either turn over the ball or create pretty horrible ball for our backs which they turn over. The fact that Wales were seldom behind the last mans feet also didnt help guys like Reinach and Lambie trying to get the ball to their outside backs as they were always tackled as they received the ball. Unless the Boks learnt to make more passes we can expect more losses. Hougaard and LeRoux had shockers, Mahoje and Hendricks were spectators. I thought we scrummed well and our lineouts were fine…yes we had 1 bad scrum but it happens. Also think the ref was pretty lenient on the Welsh wheeling the scrum as they were under pressure when pushing straight. But this is what we are going to have to deal with in the NH. So we can either moan or adapt

Im not enough of an A-hole to play “I told you so”, but the Boks are also paying the price for not investing any time or effort in developing midfield depth.

Add to that the refusal to develop any back 3 specialist options, and you are still left with back 3 options consisting of an ageing Habana, JP Pietersen usually off the pace due to Japanese exposure, Hendricks just not making the step up, and an increasingly flaky le Roux.

Meyer’s disbelief in a Plan B principle is biting him in the ass.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 109) : Now that we have come unstuck its easy so say he hasnt tested depth. We were all fine with him playing those guys when we beat the All Blacks at Ellis Park. If Mvovo and Hendricks had scored and done well on the weekend all would have been fine. HM would have brought on DeAllende for Serfontein and partnered him with JDV. Unfortunately injuries and a poor performance have limited its ability to rotate guys. Im not saying he is 100% correct but its very tough for a national coach. Does he forsake wins in Argentina and OZ to blood players in the hope they make it and stay on form for the RWC. Are tests leading up to the RWC deemed worthless then? I have no problem where we are at the moment…reason i say so is because injuries and shite form has meant that guys on form in Super rugby will have to be given a shot. And the Boks have to try something different in next years tests as their current game plan has been found out. So is being in this position really so bad? Its kinda forced HM’s hand now

    Exactly.

    @SheldonK (Comment 110) :
You dont realise that you are emphasizing my point?

Partnering de Allende would have been yet again playing 2 inside centres alongside each other! Leave alone that de Allende hasnt looked close to the correct level yet.

Playing Mvovo and Hendricks was a risk only becuase the one has barely played for the Boks in the last year and the other has been on a steady decline. The latter issue sometimes arises, but then you would have an additional back 3 resource that youve been developing for just that – except that we chose to play Goosen at 15 for 1 game, just before he had to go back to his club.

You seriously dont see an issue here?

  • @Big Fish (Comment 114) : Your point is that those guys shouldnt have been played not that he isnt trying to create depth. By playing those guys he is trying to create a bit of depth. Your argument is rather that he used the wrong guys not that he hasnt given others a chance. And again which 13 has put up his hand and warranted a spot?

In addition to that, using Goosen at 15 for 1 game is not developing depth, and neither is playing a tried 12 option at 13.

I would consider any of JdJ, Mapoe or Sithole at 13 – even if they just got bench spots. If that wasnt a realistic option, then JP needed to play at 13, not wing.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 116) : I think HM wanted his centres to be JDV/Serfontein/Fourie/De Allende with JP Pieterson as cover. With Fourie retiring and then JDV now getting injured his plan has gone a bit pear shaped. He obviously doesnt rate DeJong or Mapoe and as a coach he would be silly to put in players he doesnt back because if they dont come off how would he justify it. So thats why i really dont mind the position we are in now. Its forced HM to look at other options which he probably wouldnt have before. Also if he doesnt adapt his gameplan he will 1. Get fired after RWC and 2. Seriously decrease his coaching stocks as future employers know he only has 1 gameplan.

  • Traditionally the 3rd year in charge has been the worst for Bok coaches.

Meyer won 9 and lost 4 in year 3.
De Villiers went 8 and 6
    White 5 and 7
and Mallett 8 and 6 in his last 14 matches.

Over all Meyer’s record is now 26 wins, 9 losses and 2 draws (73%). Better than anyone else in the pro-era.

The schedule for next year is: Aus (A), NZ (H), Arg, Arg, Jap, Sam, Sco, USA, 1/4F.
The worst case scenario is the Boks lose to both Aus and NZ and the 1/4-final match against either Aus, Wales or Ireland.

Even so, it would result his 4 year record to the best of the pro-era at 73.5%.

Somehow I think the current SARU managers have too much sense to fire him for that.

  • Meyer’s record against Aus is 4 and 2, Wales 4 and 1 and England 4, 0 and 1.

That translate to a 67% winning chance if the QF is against Aus, 80% against Wales and 90% against England. Which means the Boks will probably make it through to a semi against the NZ.

Based on the dismal 1 and 5 record that will probably be all I’d have to say about that.

Unless Wayne Barnes or Suzi knock out the ABs.
