Are these your 2015 Sharks?

Starting from around mid-November, all the way through until late February every year, there’s one particular question I am asked to field time and again: “When will the Sharks Super Rugby squad be announced”.

My answer is always roughly the same, too. The Sharks aren’t really big on squad announcements as such and since we all know who the players are that are contracted and in the mix and the fact that injuries or loss of form can see players promoted or dropped from any “squad” pretty much as needed makes any such announcement rather superfluous. That’s my view, anyway, but the questions keep coming regardless!

Based on the head-shots we linked to yesterday, I’m going to list out the squad as I believe it to be at this stage. This is not official, but my thinking is that the guys photographed in Super Rugby jerseys for “official media purposes” are likely to be the ones in the immediate running for Super Rugby action. Obviously there are a few names (youngsters mostly) missing from this list and our understanding is that they are currently training with the Vodacom Cup (or Grey) squad, rather than the Super Rugby one.

Without further ado, here’s my best shot at your Sharks Super Rugby squad for 2015:

  • A lot of players there.

On initial read-through, the guys who appear not to be in the immediate mix are:
    Johan Meyer
    Stefan Ungerer
    Tyler Fisher

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 2) : yes.

@Bump (Comment 3) : slow right down pal. He hasn’t even signed anything (to our knowledge). Any announcement to be made is still to be made, if you get my drift.

  • @robdylan (Comment 1) : Hanco Venter ahead of Ungerer?….is Ungerer still regaining fitness after his injury?

  • Thanks Rob! Looks good but fullback cover remains a real concern. Hoping SP and Jaco really step up this season.

@FireTheLooser (Comment 5) : I was wondering about that too.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 5) : I think so.

@Die Kriek (Comment 6) : they are very fuzzy. I believe he will be returning to Durban in Feb once his Japanese season is over. But I don’t know what he’ll be doing when he gets there.

  • Geez that is like front row porn right there. You can mix and match any of those props together and still have a quality front row (just hope Matt Stevens actually scrums well this year). Dale-Bissie-Jannie, Beast-Bissie-Jannie, Beast-Bissie-Adriaanse, Dale-Bissie-Adriaanse, Thomas-Bissie-Stevens, Thomas-Bissie-Jannie, etc. And of course, Bissie can be swapped with Cooper also at anytime without us loosing anything on the park.

  • Its pathetic that Tyler Fisher is not there……so sick of how Unions treat our talented youngsters…..I see the same with Pat Howard at the Stormers who at the moment is starting and playing very well for Munster, where his talents are obviously appreciated.

My guess is he will stay at Munster and qualify for Ireland thanks to useless Coetzee.

As for Fisher, no doubt he is beyond pissed off that he cant even make a squad of 48……would not be surprised to hear that his agent is looking for greener pastures – its pathetic.

Murray ahead of Fisher is insulting

  • @Saffex (Comment 10) : I’m just taking a stab in the dark here with my own theory, but maybe with Fisher still being so young, and having been sidelined for so long through injury, the thought is to have him play VC and CC this year first to regain form/confidence etc. Don’t always assume that just because a youngster did not make the SR squad, that no one at the union rates him. Not all players are like Lambie/Pollard/Frans Steyn, that seems to be born ready for SR.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 12) : Look Pollard is not my cup of tea, but the boy can play. Although he might have been pushed a little too much too soon, at least he is not made of glass like the Glass Goose.

  • One question, I saw last year that Paul Perez was hanging around the sharks camp. Is there any plan to use him in any of the squads?

  • Wow our FH stocks are looking good! I would be happy with any one of Fred, Lionel or Tim covering for Pat, should he pick up an injury (Touch wood, crossing fingers, holding thumbs, pinch of salt over the shoulder and all the other lucky charms!!). 😛

  • Forwards are pretty well covered. Backs probably less so but they seem to be banking on the bit part players from previous years now stepping up. Ungerer prob not up to full fitness yet. Fisher didnt have a good year in 2014 so cannot feel aggrieved. Curious that Brendon Cope has had a look in-he was the best u21 back last year alongside Ungerer

  • @Saffex (Comment 23) : yes and then he got injured and did not play for most of the season so it would make sense to let the young lad get a bit of game time in Vodacom cup before throwing him in with the big boys of Super rugby.

  • @Rooiwillie (Comment 29) : @robdylan (Comment 30) : Agreed. Although I’d probably take another fullback first…and then another loosie. I reckon someone more in the Marcell mould. Or Keegan Daniel would work too…

  • Good depth and with the additions of Kanko and JP (and hopefully Keegan too) this should be a cracker of a season (de ja vu).

Was great meeting some of the guys at the fun/fan day on Sat, some big boys indeed.
