The Sharks XV Vodacom Cup side gets their pre-season underway this afternoon when they take on NWU Pukke in a warm-up game in Pietermaritzburg.

Details are sketchy (as they typically are at this stage of the season), but according to the SupaRugby FaceBook page, the following line-ups should be more or less accurate.

Sharks XV (from): Alrin Eksteen, Michael Cloete, Sibusiso Nkosi, Nkuleku Marwana, Kelvin Elder, Merlynn Pieterse, Josh Bragman, Malcolm Cele, Stefan Ungerer, Daniel du Preez, Wian Vosloo, Sias Koen, Johan Meyer, Ray Williams, Hyron Andrews, Petrus de Basson, Bart le Roux, Ruan Kramer, Chris de Beer, Andrew du Plessis, Barend Potgieter, Mzamo Majola.

NWU Pukke: Rhyno Smith; Arthur Festus, Cooper Smit, Johan Deysel, Dalen Goliath; Johnny Welthagen, Dillon Smith; Jeandré Rudolph (capt), PJ Uys, Rhyk Welgemoed, Danie Jordaan, Ruan Venter, John-Roy Jenkinson, Jacques Vermaak, Joe Smith.

  • so, just to play open cards here, I’ve had three quite different lineups from 3 different sources. I suggest anyone who wants to know for sure head down to the game and see who runs out.

  • That team looks more like an u21 club side than our Vodacom Side. I suspect the game is to test depth of Vodacom side and the 1st choice guys are training and playing vs Super rugby side

  • One would think Ungerer is playing in this squad to regain some fitness after injury and not because he is deemed to be inferior to Wright and Venter. Because he isn’t.
He surely has to be Reinachs 2 IC for the S15?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 5) : I think we will find that as players rotate out of the Super Rugby side, they will filter into the Sharks XV side. That was always the idea.

So this team is made up of Grey Squad members only.

  • And in other news: the Bulls beat the Cheetahs 30-13 in a warmup game. It was 9-6 deep into the second half before the Bulls scored 3 tries in no time (with 2 tries scored by Piet van Zyl) before the Cheetahs got a consolation score…
