The University of the Western Cape hosted the University of KwaZulu Natal in the opening round of this years FNB Varsity Shield at the UWC Sports Stadium in Bellville last night.
It was, however, the Impi’s from Durban that opened the scoring through inside centre, Marius Louw, towards the end of the first half. Fly-half, Innocent Radebe converted the try to give his team an 8 – 0 lead.
The two teams went into the half time break with the Impi’s leading 8 – 0.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Radebe, who was also named man-of-the-match scored his teams second try. He also converted the try as Impi’s took a 16 – 0 lead with 25 minutes to go.
UWC’s right wing, Gavian Cloete scored his teams only try minutes later. Fly-half, Quaid Langeveldt was unable to add the extra three.
Scores remained 16 – 5 untill the final whistle, as Impi’s get their Varsity Cup campaign off to a winning start.
Scorers:
FNB UWC – Try: Gavian Cloete
FNB UKZN – Tries: Marius Louw, Innocent Radebe. Coversions: Radebe (1)

Its a good win. Lets hope they consistent enough to get a home final…and hope the Sharks are searching for any other possible ukzn students that qualify
Great win hopefully we win the whole thing now
tough two week ahead facing Wits and TUT. Go IMPI!!!!!!!!!
Well done Impi!!!
They seem to be doing good things with UKZN rugby these days.
@StevieS (Comment 4) : ja and long may it continue!!!!!!
Well, that’s a good start! Bummed I couldn’t see it…
I just found the nearest Varsity Cup thread to chat about what is happening tonight…
My boytjies, Maties, lead 37-8 and have wrapped up the bonus point. Currently that puts them in fourth position and in a semifinal spot…
Pukke are the only guys who can displace the Maties. To do that they have to win in Bloem against Shimlas. Currently they trail 24-5…
Oh no…Pukke score. Great try, though.
The conversion is good, so after 44 minutes it is 24-13 to Shimlas…exciting stuff!
Ooh, another great run by the little Pukke scrumhalf! Come on Shimlas…
Now the Shimlas scrum gets absolutely crunched…but they get a penalty for illegal scrumming by Pukke…
Great tackle by Shimlas in the corner to keep Pukke out…
…but then they don’t throw it in straight into the lineout. 5m scrum Pukke…
A few phases lead to a Pukke penalty and they set up a 5m lineout…
Collapsed mall means a team warning, another penalty and another 5m lineout…
Maties now lead 42-8…
Great defence by Shimlas…finally leads to a huge clearance from…wait for it…the prop!
A second skew throw in a row by Shimlas…
More good defence by Shimlas…
Ikeys just qualify for the semis with an 8-0 win in Cape Town…
Maties win 50-8 and are in semifinal spot pending the Shimlas-Pukke result…
In Bloem it is 24-13 after 62 minutes…
Pukke could also make the semis if they get 2 log points either through a draw or by getting 2 losing bonus points by scoring 4 tries and losing by less than 7…so this is still wide open…
Try to Shimlas…
Damn, but I like Pukke too…anyway, it is what it is…
Conversion missed makes it 29-13…
So two tries for Pukke it will have to be…
Shimlas are on top now, but Pukke still have a chance…
Pukke have just missed too many tackles…
Oh my word! What a try by Pukke…now they will have a chance right to the end…
Conversion missed…that was an important one…29-18…a try for Pukke without Shimlas scoring again gets them through to the semis…
Poor knock by Shimlas! Hau!! Come on…
Shimlas earn the turnover penalty at the breakdown…
Pukke on the attack with great play!!! And it is a try!! Oh noooo…now Shimlas have to score again to put Maties through!!
29-26 Shimlas…
As it stands Maties are going out…I think…though Andy Capastagnio hasn’t seen it yet…
Oh damn it. It ends 29-26 and Pukke get two bonus points and sneak into the semis…Maties are out…oh bother! And three minutes after the game Andy Cap finally figures it out…
