Go Sharks!
Go Sharks!!!!! And to all my Sharksworld friends who’s attending the game ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!
Handling looking okay so far
Reinach’s kick charged down…hmm! It all Ends in a Penalty for Toulon. They kick for the Corner again…
Lineout 5m out…
Nice defence by du Toit!
Great try by Toulon…David Smith scores after a good kick ahead…
The conversion from the touchline is wide and it stays 5-0…
Great Little kick by Sanchez…
Reinach gets pinged for Holding on…a bit unlucky there…
5-0 after 15 mins…
Nice tackle by Sithole…and he wins the Penalty!
The Sharks aim their first kick at the Posts…
Lambie nails it beautifully…5-3 after 17 mins…
Same problem in clearing our 22m. Is there no one working with individual players on skills during the start of the season. Reinach still slow from the base putting Lambie under pressure.
Lovely take by Bothma!!
@KILLER SHARK (Comment 15) : Our taking of the kick off has been poor so far!!
Burden, Smith, Bakkies looking on…
Nice turnover Sharks!
Lovely break by Williams!
The Sharks have a scrum in the Toulon 22…come on men!
Ali or Heimar 😀
Claassens is looking good at 9 for Toulon…
@JarsonX (Comment 22) : Heimar…
Lovely offlaod by Reinach, but Lambie is smashed in the tackle…Sharks still have it…and earn a Penalty…
The Sharks will go for Posts again…
Well, one has to say that Reinach has incredible pace when he gets the Chance to run…
Lambie nails another…5-6 Sharks after 23 mins…
Lovely Little chip by Hernandez puts Toulon on the attack again…
Stevens gets crunch in the scrum and concedes a Penalty…Toulon take it quickly…
But another good turnover at the breakdown earns us a penalty!
Jeez, Bizzy is bossing the deck
There’s been some really good work by the Sharks at the breakdown…
@vanmartin (Comment 32) : Absolutely!
It is raining pretty hard in France!
Nice take of the high ball by Lambie, but then lost it in the tackle…
@pastorshark (Comment 35) : Slippery ball, that’s a good test for the Sharks
The Sharks win another penalty at the breakdown…
Bismarck again!!
@pastorshark (Comment 35) : Wish that was not the case
@vanmartin (Comment 37) : Yup…
I like the look of Claassens pass…I wonder whether we will gt to see it in a Shark’s jersey this season!
Bissie is a machine. MOTM performance in the making
Good work by the Sharks forwards off the driving mall earns another penalty!
Lambie will go for posts again!
Anyone spot our fearless leader in the crowd yet?
3/3 for Lambie makes it 5-9 Sharks! Good start for the flyhalf…32 mins gone…
We’re losing as many balls at the breakdown as we’re winning.
By the way, Bothma is playing 8, Oosthuizen 7 and no Mthembu on the field…
@vanmartin (Comment 46) : Not yet…
Reinach off…limping a bit…I hope that is only precautionary!
Hoffman on…
@pastorshark (Comment 51) : Hope so!
Reinach’s ribs being checked out? I hope it is not a problem…otherwise we need to make snappy with the Claassens signing!
@pastorshark (Comment 51) : Probably
@vanmartin (Comment 53) : Please?
Sharks run it out of the 22, before SP puts it onto the boot and it rolls into touch…
Mouritz Botha down…with a contact lense issue…
@pastorshark (Comment 57) : Thought that kick was a poor decision. You?
Botha taking over Jannie’s role of losing a contact lense each match.
Jeez Bissie has been huge!
Bismark is a beaST when on form
Good work by Coetzee, but Toulon ruck over it to turn it over…before Bismarck wins the turnover penalty again!
@Here be dragons (Comment 60) :
Halftime approaching…1 minute to go…
Hell bells Bissy is back!!!!!!
@JD (Comment 66) : Good stuff…
Lambie puts that out on the full for his first real mistake…
Lambie’s out of hand kicking has been poor
Half time
That’s halftime…5-9…
Bismarck has been very good at the breakdown…
Bothma is looking good…
Pity about the rain in terms of us seeing what the Sharks can do with ball in hand…
Bissie is back!!!!What power over the ball!!
@pastorshark (Comment 68) : He’s kicked every kick onto a Toulon back. Hernandez chipped and regathered after one of them and we ended up defending a 5m lineout.
What I’ve seen of Claassens in this game he looks crisp and fast so I would welcome him with open arms at the Sharks!!!
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 69) : He has had one bad kick
SP made the mistake for Toulons try he should have covered his man on the outside
@JD (Comment 75) : Agreed…
@lostfish (Comment 76) : Let’s put it this way – he hasn’t made any good kicks.
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 79) :
The best thing about seeing it rain in France is that we don’t have to be green with envy…wonderful rain falling here!!
From the kickoff Sharks go over…TMO to decide…
Watching a Sky Sports stream, and the commentators and panel are all complaining that the Sharks are taking it to seriously Nad being to physical, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Stevens knocked it on! No try…
Hahaha the commentator saying Stevens wouldn’t have fumbled if it was his evening dinner.
Paul Perez is on…
Nice pick up by du Toit…and the commentator keeps calling him Du ToiTTT
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 85) : Hahaha! It does look like it!
Stevens is getting crunched. Give Adriaanse a go…
Sharks win one against the throw. Good work by Mouritz…
Lambie calls the mark…
Claassens has been charged down twice now…
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 85) : 😆
Ooh…lots of handbags…one of the Sharks going to get a yellow card for a late tackle…it’s Bothma…
Oh dear…
Oosthuizen helped off the field…let’s hope that is not anything longterm either!
Toulon kick it towards the corner…
Excellent defense at the maul!
Great defence by the 7-man Sharks pack…they force a knock on and the Sharks have the put in…
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 98) : That was very good…
That was less good though…the Sharks concede a free kick at the scrum for standing up…
PSdT does very well at the breakdown to win the penalty…that has been a plus for the Sharks tonight…
Still 5-9 after 51 mins…
@pastorshark (Comment 102) : Yes, our defense has been great!
Our scrum is getting crunched!! Our whole front row has been replaced…and that wasn’t a goo start for the new boys…ai!
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 104) : Our scrum less so…
Mouritz wins another one against the throw…
Toulon a penalty and Claassens take it quickly…dangerous!
Shit!
Armitage making an immediate impact.
Try for Toulon in the corner…the Sharks did well to turn it over, but then turned it over…umm…in turn…try time…
So that makes it 10-9 after 56 mins…
And a mistake at the kickoff by the Sharks…scrum Toulon on the middle spot…
Besides the charge down from the kick off we haven’t even come close to scoring.
Jeepers, our scrum is taking a caning!
Bothma is back on…
PSDT also having a huge game
Looks like basically all the subs are on…
Toulon are speeding up the game now and looking dangerous…
It’s not looking pretty at the moment…
We’re getting run off our feet now.
Penalty Toulon…they kick for the corner…
This time du Toit makes sure we get the ball against the throw…
Oooh…du Toit down…hope he’s ok…
du Toit off
He’s coming off…again I’m holding thumbs that it is nothing serious!
Scrums are a mess!
Our scrum has not been good.
Lambie gets a very akward ball…puts in a decent kick…though why did Toulon let that bounce. Sharks have a lineout just outside the 22…
Adriaanse and Dale is really poor tonight!!
Zeilinga on…knocks his first ball on. The ref then misses a Toulon knock…
Shocker by SP…that can’t help his tender confidence…
He kicked that directly into touch by a country mile!!
Bothma has been good…
Cooper carrying on where Bissie left off.
Cooper wins the turnover penalty at the breakdown…
Armitage wins another turnover at the breakdown…
The conditions are pretty shocking…
SP not great under the high ball…
Still 10-9 after 69 mins…
@pastorshark (Comment 137) : Really poor from Perez to die with the ball.
Our scrum has been disastrous for most of the game…
Fred juuust finds touch…and it puts the Sharks well on attack…come on men!
Come on…4m out!
Sharks win a penalty that Zeilinga could spit over!
He does…well, kick it over! 10-12 after 72 mins…
Chadwick has been good in the loose stuff…if not in the tight…
Cooper takes the fullback out very late…but is not punished…
Cooper’s lineout throws haven’t been great. Some work to in the set pieces for our second stringers!!!
6 minutes to go…
A lot of up and unders by Toulon now…stands to reason because SP can’t catch them for *%@&!
Mouritz Botha really has been very, very good!
Sharks have a scrum with 4 minutes to go…
Nice work by Bothma again…our backs run it…better…until Perez can’t catch the slippery ball…
Hoffman’s ‘discussions’ with the ref is really getting on my nerves
@pastorshark (Comment 151) : The one time he actually caught it he chucked it away. 😕
Nice ic pu he bll ou on Toulon’s 22…they stuff up the quick throw…scrum Sharks…
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 156) : Oh dear!
The Sharks concede another free kick at the scrum…no man!
More good work by Botha…but the Sharks are penalised for a high tackle by Esterhuizen…
We’ll have to defend one last time with a minute to go…
Hold on boys!!!!
@vanmartin (Comment 155) : Absolutely…it’s what used to irritate me about Kockott at the Sharks…and McLeod at the Sharks…
Time added on now…and Toulon win a kickable penalty…
@pastorshark (Comment 163) : and Putt at the Sharks…
That was a harsh penalty…
Terrible game. Barely 100m gained ball in hand.
Sanchez misses the kick and the Sharks win 10-12…
Look, the conditions didn’t help at all…
We win! Hard slog and deserved win. Well done Sharkies!!! 😎
A win is a win
Massive Massive win for thr Sharks!!!!! Well done guys!!!!!
Well done Sharks, did not expect a win. Lots to still tweak by the looks of it.
Let’s hope the injury subs have all just been cautionary.
The good stuff?
1. Very good personal games for Bismarck, PSdT, Mouritz Botha and Renaldo Bothma.
2. Our defence, bar one or two individual errors, was very good.
3. Our defensive work at the breakdown was excellent.
4. We kicked 4/4 of our shots at goal.
5. We won!
@pastorshark (Comment 169) : Thanks for the updates
A touch harsh … player onside not part of the ruck … hometown desision
@pastorshark (Comment 175) : biggest problem was the Sharks scrum once Beast, Bissy and Matt went off!!!!!
The not good stuff?
1. Our scrums were poor!
2. Cooper’s throw ins into the lineout were not great.
3. SP was pretty poor, especially under the high ball.
4. Our attacking work at the breakdown needs some work.
5. There will be some injury concerns. Oosthuizen looked the worst…but we’ll be holding thumbs that Reinach and PSdT are all ok..
What and awfully typical game of Sharks/South African rugby. We managed to drag them down to our level and win like that at least I guess so yay for that?
We won, we did not entertain, nothing has changed….
@byron (Comment 177) : Barnes didn’t have his best game.
@Seth101 (Comment 180) : Did you see the conditions?
@JD (Comment 178) : Look, Matt wasn’t great either!! He got crunched pretty regularly and was only solid when it was their put in and their loosehead was more interested in just getting a solid ball back. We remain very dependant on Jannie!!
@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 181) : Agreed…
@Seth101 (Comment 180) : I’m with “Spirit of Rugby” on this one. The conditions were awful and I am quite happy to see us playing a tighter game in these conditions.
Typical JW game plan
@MysticShark (Comment 176) : No problem…
The ceremony was a bit embarrassing.
My takeaways:
– Lambie is very rusty and still paying a bit conservative
– the pack is very good, bar some scrum issues (not unusual at the beginning of a season)
– Midfield looked staid, but that might just have been because of the halfbacks
– SP was playing like it was 2014
@vanmartin (Comment 173) : I think there was enough there to be happy about. The need to tweak is normal after the first serious warmup game. I have a few concerns about our setpiece (how on earth are we going to rest Jannie?!), I hope there aren’t any serious injuries…but the rest will come right…or can be ascribed to the conditions…
Conditions complaint: Check
“Ref had a bad game”: Check
Lack of attack comments: Check
This is a sharks game comment thread all right!
@Big Fish (Comment 189) : At least Lambie’s place kicking was good! The rust can be worked off…and he did do some good things. The pack was good, though some setpiece aspects need work. The matter of the midfield was more likely an issue of conditions. And SP was playing like in 2014. I hope he gains confidence as the season goes on and doesn’t lose more of it!
Sorry friends but you can defend boring rugby all you want, I won’t. Boring rugby is bad enough when the games actually matter, when its an exhibition match well then its just sad if you can’t play with some flash.
@Seth101 (Comment 191) : Who’s complaining about conditions…they were just bad…and it affected the game…just a statement! And there were no complaints about the ref being against the Sharks or that he cost the Sharks or that he was unfair to the Sharks. Just that he didn’t have a particularly good game all around…it is Wayne Barnes after all.
I feel SP”s time is done and should take a backseat for now.Lwazi is our 15 going forward.The backline looked very impotent.Esterhuizen looked explosive and I will choose him above Waylon at 13 once Frans is back.
Also to everyone saying “But look we won, we did I promise” um maybe that was because they tried to have fun and never took penalties they otherwise would have? It really says something if a victory in that fashion is worth being proud of.
my biggest two issues are that the sharks back line doesn’t seem to know what they should do with the ball. no2 is our back up players are def not on the same lever as our no1 players. our scrums especially with our second stringers are awe full.
@tigershark (Comment 195) : I wouldn’t play Esterhuizen at 13…but that’s just me…
@Uli Boelie (Comment 197) : Agreed…
@Stu (Comment 188) :
@Seth101 (Comment 193) : I don’t agree with you…it was not just an exhibition game…it was our only serious preparation for Super Rugby. So I was quite chuffed to see the Sharks take it seriously. Regarding game plans and attack and all that…I’ll judge them over 4 or 5 game and not just over 1…played in shocking conditions…
Very hard game against a quality side,in terrible conditions.
Positives,excellent game from Bismark,Botha and P.S.D.T.,the birth of a legendary pairing of Marcel and Bothma.Beast’s best game in ages,Lambie superb.
Negatives,S.P must go he is an embarrassment,Reinarch was abysmal,andcan anybody remember a single thing that the rest of the backline did apart from a U bolt tackle fro Esterhuizen.
Was surprised that Osthuizen started ahead of Siberia,
Otherwise must agree with Uli at 186.
@Seth101 (Comment 196) : And we haven’t really said we’re super proud about anything…it is just one step…let’s have a look at the next few that start next week…
I’ll be interested to see what Rob posts over the next few days! 😆
Hey, I just woke up to the fact that I just turned 40. Oh dear…
@The hound (Comment 202) : Re: Oosthuizen starting…I wonder why they made that change to the announced starting lineup. Could it have been because of the weather?
@pastorshark (Comment 204) : Don’t worry I am sure he loved traveling all the way there to sit in the rain and watch the sharks manage to not score a single try. But he got to see us win I guess.
@pastorshark (Comment 205) : Congrats and enjoy!!! 😆
@pastorshark (Comment 205) :
I wish you at least another 60!
@tigershark (Comment 195) :
Esterhuizen is too slow for 13. But a great back-up to Frans at 12.
@Seth101 (Comment 207) :
@Seth101 (Comment 207) :
I’m sorry to say it, but now you’re beginning to sound like a teenaged girl – as much as I do agree with some of your comments above.
@Big Fish (Comment 209) : Agreed on the Esterhuizen thing…
@Big Fish (Comment 211) : Cynicism is not a trait I would associate with a teenage girl? I guess it is just my fault for expecting something different from last year, or the year before. I hat South African rugby, absolutely 100% hate it, unfortunately it just so happens the Sharks are a South African team :/.
@pastorshark (Comment 206) : Injury to Tera.
@pastorshark (Comment 205) : Alles gut zum Geburtstag. Is that close enough?
@Seth101 (Comment 207) : Certainly did. Enjoyed every awesome minute of it.
@pastorshark (Comment 205) : congratulations my friend and don’t worry about the age now that you’re over the hill you will really start to pick up speed!!! 😉
Believe me, this result gives me a lot of ammunition to use against the group of Irish that I’m hanging out with currently.
I mean, the pre-season rusty Sharks beat the current star studded European Champions…. 😈
Another win for Southern Hemisphere rugby 😆
@robdylan (Comment 215) : must do it in French boet you’re in France not in Germany! !! 😉
@FireTheLooser (Comment 218) : yes two from two with the blue team beating the UK champs. Both the finalists of the Heineken Cup lost to SA teams!!
@Big Fish (Comment 209) : yes don’t think he can play 13 but he’s a solid option at 12.
Could not watch the game as my PVR kept complaining of no signal after load shedding ended. 👿
I would not be too fussed if the team is unable to pull off fancy attacking moves at this stage – especially in those conditions. It takes time for a team to gel on attack. Let’s face it – it has been years since the Sharks last played a good attacking game against quality opposition. We need to give team Venter & Gold time to get their plans to work.
I believe that this isnt our starting team and there were players looking to cement their place. Center combo i think Sithole is the better bet at outside centre than murray. SP doesnt seem to be living up to the hype as all he seems to do is kick away good ball.
PSDT had a blinder and will add immense oomph to our pack. Bothma played well also. Halfback pairing looks good if only it were a drier game. My concerns are our centre combinations and at fullback. At least the cheetahs are without brussow in the opener.
It was fantastic to see our boys on the pitch again.
Also is the shirt a exhibition shirt or is it similar to our SR Jersey?
Its clear reading the above comments that some guys are as rusty watching and judging a game as the players are in preseason. No much mention of Marcel Coetzee, him and PSDT the 2 best Sharks by some distance. Bissie was good for his 40min. And those that were mocking the Mouritz Botha signing please go print your comments and eat them! Unfortunately the rest were ranging from pretty average to pretty poor..and then there was SP Marais- eish that boy. Of big concern to Gary, Brendon and Co would be ball retention at rucks and collisions and those scrums. The backline also need to be a lot deeper but thats a problem Sharks had for years. Bt hey we won against Toulon C and we unbeaten this year 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 216) : That’s good 😀
@FireTheLooser (Comment 218) : Do you think we would have won if they had taken the game seriously and kicked for goal rather than try and score tries for the sake of entertainment?
Same old same old. Our backline has no respect for the ball, Coetzee can’t offload etc. Etc.etc.
Does anyone know how serious any of the injuries was???
So after watching the game I have to ask, is there a more useless fullback than SP in South Africa? I would rather prefer Odwa or Van Tonder at 15 than him.
Also I would like to point out that they were missing about the same amount of players as we do during the currie cup. So for those of you saying we beat Toulon, no we beat their B team….by two points…..and scored no tries.
My point of view for what it’s worth, Blah blah blah to some, get over it we won albeit fugly 😉
@Dunx (Comment 223) : ja must say SP di not have a good game. With Bissy in the form he was last night any openside in the world can come he will keep them Bissy!!!!
@Seth101 (Comment 231) : Seth dude, we won, move on, lets wait and see when our whole team is back together, we also kept making subs as it was clear to see the fear for injuries was the order of the day,our season has only just started……
To beat Toulon in Toulon is a massive feat as they have been unbeaten there for some time.
We all know we have Steyn Jordaan JpP returning which will make a big diffs to our backline.
SP at full back is my biggest concern, he is poor in defence, he is poor under the high ball and he never hits the backline, only once did he come into the backline and then he kicked it away with an over lap…..
The 1st try score by Toulon was by SP shooting inwards instead of him staying on the outside to cover the Toulon wing
We either need to try Fisher at 15 or somehow get Steyn to buy into playing 15 again, in that Esterhuizen can move into the 12 slot, both Steyn and Esterhuizen have massive kicking boots, one left and one right.
@sharks_lover (Comment 236) : Yip, our backline is the biggest concern.Murray looks out of depth and is a stopgap 13 at best.I would rather have Esterhuizen at 13 than him once Frans is back with a fast back 3 like Sithole, JP and Mvovo!
so for me this could be our backline options.
15 Steyn
14 JpP
13 Sbura
12 Esterhuizen
11 Mvovo
10 Lambie
09 Reinach
or
15 Fisher
14 JpP
13 Sithole
12 Steyn
11 Mvovo
10 Lambie
09 Reinach
or
15 Mvovo
14 JpP
13 Sbura
12 Steyn
11 Wilson ( if he is still with the Sharks?)
10 Lambie
09 Reinach
We do have good options, we just need to select right?
I also feel Ungerer if fit? should be brought in sooner rather than later.
Back line players not in those starting line ups are as follows
Heimer
Perez
Hoffman
Ungerer
Wright
Van Tonder
Jordaan
Odwa
Sp – who needs to be let go back to EP
Murray
Cannot think of other names still out but I am sure there are 1 or 2
FB an issure
13 Center with Jordaan out an issue
Scrummy can become an issue
Players to return still,
Jordaan
Steyn
JpP
Kanko
Alberts
Jannie
Du Toit
Lewies
Lock from Border, Blonde hair cannot remember name????
Mtembu, Injured sick????
Then any news on whether the stories of Daniel or Deysel returning?
Claasens coming to the Sharks or not???
@Seth101 (Comment 231) : A B C D team does not matter in bad weather the Sharks won. Just remember it’s not as if the Sharks played their A-team either!!!!!
@JD (Comment 241) : 😉 tell him JD
😆
@Seth101 (Comment 193) : Hold on there Seth. This game mattered an awful lot, it was our big bust out game in preparation for the competition. A hell of a lot would be learnt by the coaches and players by taking the game seriously than would have been the case had we gone out there and just thrown the ball around in adverse conditions.
Yes it wasnt end to end stuff but it was played as a serious game by a team getting match ready for one of the toughest competitions around. And thats how it should be.
@sharks_lover (Comment 238) : ja Sp did not have a good game. Maybe time to play Movovo or JPP at 15!!!
@sharks_lover (Comment 242) : ja looking at the guys on the side line (from Toulon) it did not seem to me as if they did not care about winning the game!!!!!!!
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 243) : Tell that to the team who chose to try score tries rather than take penalty opportunities.
@Seth101 (Comment 246) : ja ok boet the Sharks are kak and stole the victory blah blah blah!!!!!!
@tigershark (Comment 237) : Not having a go just asking, what did u base ur assumption on murray on? I think i saw him touch the ball bout twice and passed the ball into space both times. In fairness i did miss the first 20min thanks to eskom so i may have missed something shocking
@SheldonK (Comment 248) : Not that Murray was so bad, clear to see new combinations, they need time to find each other on the field.
@sharks_lover (Comment 249) : No fair point and as per usual witht he Sharks it was mostly given to the forwards with the backs from 11-15 watching on mostly. I cant recall Williams taking the ball into contact once. Esterhuizen got his hands on the ball when he came on but only because he pushed his way inbetween forwards to get it, he did very little handling and running as a ‘back’ if that makes sense?
@SheldonK (Comment 250) : Does make sense, and I kind of agree.
Heimer did have one break where he went to ground late in the 2nd half
The lack of intent from the Sharks to find a competent 15,means only one thing to me,Fransie is going play there.
Not a bad thing for the Sharks in that he is far superior to anyone else we have,but seriously is this guy going to be played in a number of positions in a World Cup year again.
Heis in my opinion the best 12 in South Africa,and Willie is a very good 15,
So are we going to have a situation again where Frans is best bet at 15 for the Sharks and best bet at 12 for the Boks.
Oh and the other position I see problems is TH, Adriaanse and Stevens are failing badly
@JD (Comment 247) : Lol bit touchy? I have every right to complain about very very boring rugby. I am happy to link you to comments where just about everyone here was doing the same last season….
For me it doesn’t matter if its the first game or the last, boring rugby is boring rugby.
Everyones biggest criticism last season was that we were winning games but not scoring tries. This game did nothing to show that anything has changed.
I really hope they dont make Steyn 15. He is the best no 12 in SA. He is our answer to SBW. For both the sharks and boks. Mvovo did very well at 15 last year and even jp can fill that one.
We miss Ludik
@Seth101 (Comment 254) : Look although I disagree with you that the game was boring,it was a very hard contest between two very matched teams.
I do agree with you that we played a classic Jake White game plan.
Whether we set out to play it or were forced into playing it the fact that we did is not debateable.
That game plan i is not a bad one ,it was good enough to win a World Cup.
@Seth101 (Comment 254) : boet it’s the first game of the season and new combinations, add to this it was cold and raining so ja Sharks did not go for a wide game. As for boring it was one hell of a tight game and if that bores you I personnaly think you should stop watching 15 man rugby and should change to just watching 7’s as that is what you seem to expect of every game!!!!!
@sharks_lover (Comment 253) : Dale also struggled in the scrums. Back up props needs to step up otherwise it will once again be a long year for Beast and Jannie!!!!!!!
@Seth101 (Comment 254) :
Vast difference between what a team starting is season and one ending it would expect out of a game. So it’s no surprise that Toulon played festival rugby while we went through the gears. I agree with some of your earlier comments, but you need some perspective.
And cynicism and whining are not the same thing.
@JD (Comment 259) : you forget we have Thomas du Toit to come back one year older and one year stronger
@JD (Comment 258) : Or just watch New Zealand rugby, they seem to score a hell of a lot more tries in much worse conditions over there. It is all mentality, in South Africa there is a mentality of using forwards and grinding out a game, and I really don’t like it.
@The hound (Comment 252) : It is interesting that 15 was the 1 position where nobody else was tried. Steyn may be a possibility, what about JP Pieterson there too? If they are being considered thats only reason i can think no rotation…unless a bolter like Tim Swiel being lined up there. Guess time will tell
@Seth101 (Comment 254) : I doubt any of us want to be subjected to more Jakeball, so I’m sure we’re all with you on that one. I thought the Sharks put together a few decent phases with ball in hand before the weather turned.
I’m kind of haunted these days by the question: “what would a NZ team do?”. I think they wouldn’t play as conservative a game as the Sharks even if it was raining but in saying that, this is the first proper hit out for the boys, free from White’s long shadow, so it may or may not improve in weeks to come. Only time will tell.
At the same time I think it’s fair to be chuffed about beating Toulon at home, even if it is a warm-up game where the result doesn’t matter too much. Why? Because it was unexpected and it’s nice to be surprised. Are we reading too much into this victory? I doubt it as most of us have been Sharks fans for a while now. We realise the real test still lies ahead and scraping by won’t win us any silverware.
@Seth101 (Comment 262) : then stop watching it!!!!!!!!! Don’t force yourself to watch something you don’t like. 😈
@Seth101 (Comment 246) : Nothing to tell them, they know they are the defending double champions, topping the league and in the middle of their season. Add to that playing on their home ground in their conditions. How they want to approach a game (which essentially means something totally different to them than to us at this stage of the season) is their baby. How we approach a game which could have a huge bearing on our future season is a serious issue.
I dont believe they took the game as lightly as they took the Sharks and in hindsight I think they would have taken those penalties in the hope of getting the win.
@JD (Comment 265) : If I didn’t love the Sharks then I wouldn’t care enough to complain 😉
@vanmartin (Comment 264) : boet watching the toulon guys on the side lines it seemed to matter to them!!!! Was a great game and i do think they coach will know where the main problems for the season will be. I think it’s back up props and fullback.
On a different tack,I found the commentators remarks about the rumours of Bismark and Jannie joining Montpeiiier after the Cup,very interesting.
Especially when he sited the connection and the source as being Jake White.,who is doing a guest appearance at the club.I was under the obviously misconception that Jake’s demise was he banged heads with the brothers
Love to know the truth about what really happened there.
@Seth101 (Comment 262) : If you don’t like it then don’t watch it.
@Seth101 (Comment 267) : we all do my friend we all do!!!!!!!!!! SHARKS 4 EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@The hound (Comment 269) : Also the Toulon coach when question about Bismark said “I thought he was very good and we will get to see more of him in the French League soon” Or something along those lines.
@The hound (Comment 269) : ja you mos know they are dik tjommies and braaied after every game 😈
@The hound (Comment 269) : mayb JW and the brothers Dup enjoy headbanging together?

A lot more comments here who share my view
@JD (Comment 271) : JD i think u need to dial back on the excitement just a little before u explode haha Its a long season…pace yourself
@Seth101 (Comment 272) : @The hound (Comment 269) : Sharks needs to keep hold of the brothers as they’re waaaaaaay better than the back up players at the Sharks!!!!!!!!!
@JD (Comment 268) : Point I was trying to make regarding “the result doesn’t matter too much” is that it gives either team bragging rights but nothing more. The win will of course matter to the players involved but from a team perspective the game itself was far more valuable than the results. Neither team earns points from this but it gives the Sharks an idea of where they are regarding fitness and areas they need to focus on and I suppose it’s an ideal scouting opportunity for Toulon as I’m sure a number of Sharks players will look for greener pastures after the World Cup. It also put some extra bums on seats in Toulon’s stadium which I’m sure they won’t mind.
@SheldonK (Comment 276) : Sharks 4 Ever!
Is that better? 😈
@Seth101 (Comment 275) : As someone who also harbours a particularly vehement hate of the Sharks game plan of the past few years (so much so that I changed my SW nick), if last night’s game had been a RWC final Boks against AB’s I would have commended the Boks for their tactical superiority in the conditions.
So I’d be a hypocrite to judge the Sharks differently. You might want to re-evaluate your stance Seth.
How average is Ettiene Oosthuizen. He’s a bit of a marshmallow when you take into consideration he’s 6’6, 120kg’s. We need willem asap!!!
@vanmartin (Comment 278) : Too true,I was thinking about how many European scouts were there,not only watching the established players but youngsters like Esterhuizen,Bothma,and even guys like Dale and Cooper,
@vanmartin (Comment 278) : ja ok I’m with you. Hope they play again next year as I think it was a good warm up game for the Sharks.
@JD (Comment 279) : haha yes…u dont wanna peak in preseason
@The hound (Comment 282) : Yeh pretty much a job interview for some…
@SheldonK (Comment 284) : or rip a muscle pussing the !!!! to much 😈
My standouts for the game: Bismark, Botha and PSDT!
Those that didnt have a good day out: Stevens and Sithole (leaky defence)
Otherwise the rest blended in for me.
Great to see the boys grind out the win in appaling conditions.
Wow I had forgotten how good PSDT was, what a performance from the young man. He has added a physical edge to his game……the way he man handled Lobbe was brilliant.
Great to see Bismark at his foraging best, what a one man display.
Coetzee was bloody good as were Bothma and Botha.
The backs showed little enterprise……the wrong centres started. Esterhuizen was far better when he came on. He showed plenty of physicality in the tackle.
Lambie and Reinach had ordinary games and SP needs to shake the passive element that has crept into his game. The lad lacks confidence these days.
Stevens as predicated was a liability in the scrums and Adriaanse was no better.
Good start for the Sharks – PSDT, Bismark and Coetzee were huge
@sharks_lover (Comment 253) : Stevens is very overweight. He takes his time getting up and trots over to the rucks very slowly.
@lostfish (Comment 289) : Agreed
@stevovo (Comment 287) : You don’t think SP had a bad game? 😯
@Saffex (Comment 288) : Pretty much exactly what i thought. Eish our backup props need to pull finger seriously. Food for thought- would Esterhuizen at 13 not get over the gain line more than at 12 when he tends to run back into traffic?
@Seth101 (Comment 291) : To be honest I did not pick up on it, but reading all the comments above it seems most seem to think so.
Must of missed some things while making some more coffee to stay awake!
@SheldonK (Comment 292) : ja well if Bastareaud (who looks like a prop) can play international rugby for France at 13 then anything is possible with regards to Andre at 13.
@Saffex (Comment 288) : Agree with you. Cobus is too slow and indecisive for me. He brings the game to a complete stand still. PSDT was sorely missed by all Sharks stakeholders. Praying and wishing him and the Sharks all the best for 2015. Bothma and Botha are very good acquisitions. One downside is our pace to the loose ruck to secure the ball.
@GreatSharksays (Comment 295) : Would like to see Cameron Wright being given a chance. He is able to increase the pace of the game. Just needs to be more consistent. Can’t wait to see him develop and play to his potential.
@robdylan (Comment 215) : Very good…almost 100%!! Thanks…:)
@JD (Comment 217) : :):):)
@Seth101 (Comment 227) : Well, they kicked 0/3 when they went for goal, so it’s difficult to say… 🙂
@tigershark (Comment 237) : In my view one couldn’t say anything about Murray after a game in those conditions! I will withhold judgement for now…
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 243) : Very much agreed…
@SheldonK (Comment 248) : You didn’t miss anything. That’s what I was thinking…
@sharks_lover (Comment 253) : Yup. Tighthead is a problem. Last night was a good example of why we play Jannie into the ground!
@Seth101 (Comment 254) : My issue is not that you complain…you have every right to go right ahead! I just think it is not quite fair to use one game, our first game in months, played in bad conditions – very wet weather at 1 degree – to make any conclusions about our game plan for the season. Make that judgement once a little more evidence is available?
@Saffex (Comment 288) : Yhat is about like I would sum it up…
@lostfish (Comment 289) : @sharks_lover (Comment 290) : Agreed x2…
@Seth101 (Comment 291) : There I agree with you completely. SP was poor: poor under the highball, poor with kicking out of hand, a mistake on defence that led to a try…not a good start…
@SheldonK (Comment 292) : Esterhuizen could work at 13
The Sharks have 3 good props in Beast, Jannie and Thomas……they fall short thereafter
@pastorshark (Comment 299) : ja that’s true he didnot kick one of his 3 chances so maybe that’s why they did not kick at poles?
@Saffex (Comment 308) : sorry to say but you are 100% correct. Dale seems to have lost the bit of form he had last year.
Enough with the SP bashing. I for one am willing to give him a chance.
@JD (Comment 310) : Chadwick lacks beef, he is 5kg off the mark…..not naturally a big guy, has done work to get to the size he is.
@GreatSharksays (Comment 311) : Good player when he played for Kings and in his first year with the Sharks…..looked Bok material……not sure what has happened to SP
After all is done & dusted above/before & the usual culprits of the weather & ref also blamed ,the real question for me is what has changed in the Sharks tic tacs/gameplan and secondly bar a few seriously hotshit players do the Sharks in general have the required personel to win SR 2015 ?
@Saffex (Comment 312) : he had a good season last year but seems to be back in 2012/2013 mode!!!!
@Saffex (Comment 313) : Jake White!!!!!!!!!!!!
@benji (Comment 314) : I here what you are saying and I believe the sharks do have the personnel to win this comp but its all going to come down to combinations and selection.Heymar and Waylon is not gonna win you a super 15 at centre but Frans and Andre can.You need those world class gamebreakers in starting positions.The rest is backup only!!!
@tigershark (Comment 317) : don’t underestimate Heimar at 12, he’s a really solid player maybe not as flashy as others but really dependable! !!
@Saffex (Comment 308) : Agreed.
@Saffex (Comment 308) : @SheldonK (Comment 319) : Agreed x2…
@benji (Comment 314) : To your first question I reckon the answer has to be: we can’t make a call on tactics after one warmup game, especially one that was played in those conditions. Let’s see how it plays itself out. To your second question: there are some positions where I have concerns, but overall we have a good squad with nice depth. Overall better than last year. But is it enough to win the comp? I don’t know…
@pastorshark (Comment 321) : we will know that only in a couple of months time but I really hope it is good enough!!!
