Toyota Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has named a strong line-up to face the Sharks in Saturday’s Super Rugby opener at Kings Park.

Francois Uys captains a side featuring Springboks in Wille le Roux, Oupa Mohoje, Coenie Oosthuizen and Lood de Jager in the starting lineup, with another test player, wing Cornal Hendricks, on the bench. New recruits Wille Britz (from the Lions) and Mike van der Spuy (from Western Province) have both cracked the nod, starting at number 8 and inside centre respectively.

The loss of key players from last year’s campaign is evident too – Torsten van Jaarsveld and former Sharks junior Danie Mienie will have big boots to fill – they replace Adriaan Strauss and Trevor Nyakane who will both feature in Bulls colours this season. Veteran Joe Pietersen has been picked to start at flyhalf, with last year’s regular pivot, Johan Goosen, now playing in France.

Maks van Dyk, Willie du Plessis and Tian Meyer, all of whom – like Mienie – played their junior rugby for the Sharks, have been included on the bench.

Cheetahs: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Clayton Blommetjies, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Michael van der Spuy, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Joe Petersen, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Willie Britz, 7 Oupa Mohoje, 6 Jean Cook, 5 Francois Uys (captain), 4 Lood de Jager, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld, 1 Danie Minnie.
Substitutes: 16 Stephan Coetzee, 17 BG Uys, 18 Maks van Dyk, 19 Carl Wegner, 20 Boom Prinsloo, 21 Tian Meyer, 22 Willie du Plessis, 23 Cornal Hendricks

  • Well I think we should bulldoze this team, especially if the guys play like they did against Toulon.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 1) : The Cheetahs always seem to lift their game when playing us but we’re at home, our fetchers’ cup runneth over and I reckon we could do well in the set-pieces. Keep a close eye on Sarel and Willie and we should come away with a win.

  • Damn poachers! Barely a local in that team – they should focus on nurturing their own talent.

Its not like the youngsters are distracted by busy social lives, colour tv, dial-up internet or anything.

  • And how exactly did they play against Toulon, I fell asleep half time?
Love the confidence, its how the Sharks start every year. Such fun, to see the enthusiasm dampen with the “watch the grass grow” style of rugby. 👿

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 9) : Yes and while that was being written Marcell Coetzee was saying that the Sharks want to play an expansive game.

  • @JD (Comment 12) : Division in the ranks. Lambie says they aren’t going to focus on tries, and he is the “playmaker”, by contrast Coetzee says they want to be expansive against the Cheetahs, and he is a loosie?

Maybe play Lambkins at flank, and the more “expansive” Coetzee at FH

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 9) : And you believe this from the same guy who specifically engineered a look that says “come at me bro, I can’t defend my channel”. Lambie is a sly one, don’t buy into his brand of reverse psychology.

  • Listen, if you tell me the Sharks will win the cup but play the worst, unwatchable rugby ever………….I’LL TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Just win the damn thing already! I’m tired of the Blue Bull supporters and their 10 000 000 cups 10 000 000 000 years ago!

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 15) : don’t say that he might hear you ……. oh no wait JW is gone our promising back will stay back!!!!! Boet they do it just to confuse the Cheetahs as now the backs will be waiting for Pat to kick and the forward will run to cover the wings whilst Heimar/Andre will be running straight for the try line. Shit I hope I did not give away the game plan.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 9) : Of course, if you go on to read the article, that’s not what he actually said…Headlines tend to warp things sometimes…his Point was that they will be focussing on getting all the Basics right…and that, if they do that, the tries will come…

  • I heard Gary Gold on East Coast Radio saying that the Sharks are going to play more expansively when the oppurtunity is there. Hopefully no more of Jake White’s way of playing. We have the potential to be one of the most potent teams in the competition.Looking forward to a great Sharks season!!! Make us proud boys!!!

  • Thats a pretty useful attacking Cheetahs lineup…not sure how they would fare having to defend for lengthy periods…then again the Sharks cant seem to retain possession for any meaningful length of time at the moment so it could be the Sharks defense vs the Cheetahs attack
