  • Sharks looked good tonight but the Stormers were just better. Maybe it’s the home ground advantage that was the difference between the two sides. But I don’t like the sense of panic that seems to be setting in amongst the Sharks technical team as a result of the poor results at the start of the season. Now would be a good time for the guys in suits to be calm and reassure the coaching team of their support. This season is far from over. The new coaching team must be given enough time to settle in.

  • Well deserved win by the Stormers. Maybe a few 50/50 calls, but nothing really we could complain to much about (yellow against ntubeni for collar tackle on Lambie). Dominant performance by Stormers though, call were always going to swing their way.

Really have to take a long hard look at a couple of things. This was a bit disheartening for the rest of the season. Hoping we can just right this one off and move on. Especially the second half. We looked so good in the first, especially considering our set pieces.

To be honest I’m getting tired of this sport. Won’t be getting myself worked by watching non-sharks games next week. Can only (just barely) handle watching my favourite sport getting ruined once per weekend.

  • So, this was the first game I watched. I woke up at 5.50am and kinda wish I hadn’t. The Sharks showed glimpses of some enterprise in the first 20 minutes (Bismarck blamed the humidity in Durban for only showing the briefest of glimpses now) but boy were they obliterated in the second half. Completely blown away. I haven’t seen such a one-sided game in years. The scrums were shocking. Could not believe we chose a 22 drop kick instead of a scrum on half way!!!!

Overall the Sharks just seemed direction-less. Almost like there’s no structured plan. Just seemed a bit too wishy washy hope for the best rugby. Can’t really put my finger on it. The players just didn’t seem too bothered. Which is all rather alarming considering what should be some fresh impetus with a new coaching staff.

I saw enough to foresee this will be a long season. We are not champion or play off material at the moment. My doubts about Gold (present from before his appointment) sadly continue.

  • The second half of this game was an absolute disaster, the stormers owned us. The sharks seem to lack the collective will to win games. We have some brilliant individuals in our ranks but we also play as indviduals…we have little cohesion as a team and we lack the urgency needed to be successful at this level.

  • Heres the complication with yhe penalty try.

    (1) the point of the knockon and where ndegane ends up being tackled are different points
    (2) there is no tackle offside line as ball is dislodged before the tackle.
    (3) reinach is offside BUT relavive to the knockon he gets behind the ball and then moves forward – essentially comming through the gate and therefore onside.

no offside … no penalty try.

  • FFS! REINACH!!! Stop with the damn kicking!! If he isn’t kicking away posesion he is placing the team under pressure. I wish Bissie could walk up to him and give him a snotklap every time he even THINKS of using his boot! I wish we could replace him he needs to get back to basics. Such a shame Mcleod is overseas and we don’t even have Claasens yet. At this rate I think Ungerer would do better. The penalty try was ALL Reincahs fault Ndugane was just doing damage control. Seems like that was all our back had to do all night due to Reinach.

  • Yes, there was no cohesion. No team play. Lots of individuals. But this is a typical and long standing Sharks issue, no?

Very frustrating basic errors too. How many times was the skip pass thrown directly into touch? How many times did the isolated ball carrier knock-on?

In the second half these errors were multiplied. Almost as if the players decided they didn’t care about the result… This is the biggest shock for me – just last week Gold was quoted as saying how proud he was of the character in the team but I saw NONE of that this week.

  • This just caps off a poor sporting weekend!

Jeez the SA cricketers just can’t escape the choker tag, can they? Two run chases now they crumbled. Question: if they do somehow go on to lift the trophy, can they seriously be called “world champions” after having been beaten so soundly by India AND Pakistan? Bit of a bittersweet thing, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I’ve learned after many attempts not to get hopes up at a CWC.

Oh well, it’s just sport after all – far more important things to get worked up over.

A lot less aimless kicking is a big positive for me. Let’s be realistic. Frans and JPP were with the team for a week and slotted straight in. It can only get better from here.

Well, if your boss is your friend, he will always cover for you and not hold you responsible for poor performance, you continue to get paid and getting good bonuses. You are happy, your boss takes the crap from his boss whilst you continue having a joy ride. Guess we know the real reason the players wanted Gary. Good plan guys.

Why Matt Stevens? Can’t understand it.
Bismark should not be captain, said it last week, he is falling apart and getting a bad reputation in the process.
How long must SA rugby stick with a player who supposedly has so much talent but fails to deliver week in and week out and then throw another of his famous hissy-fits when things don’t go his way, as is invariably the case. You need to develop Esterhuisen, he has massive potential. The Stormers showed this year that you need heart as much as talent. Our youngsters are showing the way, the older guys there for balance.
Still, you will be back. That you can count on..

    – Stevens is nowhere near good enough
    – Bismarck du Plessis as leader, tbh Id play Cooper there anyway
    – Kanko needs to get in on it, go get the ball and run with it (few better in world rugby)
    – FRANS STEYN and his brain
    – JP is a wing. Really not that hard to see and we have Sithole who has done well there (injured??)
    – BUNCH OF INDIVIDUALS WITH NO COHESION

Gary and Co are busy breaking years of thought that was drummed into players by Plumtree and Jake. Let’s be patient and give the guys time to settle and become comfortable with the new style.

I’m not sure what the referees use as a standard for “behind”. If it was, whole body behind whole body, then he was off-side. If it was, any body part behind any body part, then he was on-side.

For kick-chasers they seen to use the latter criteria.

The first twenty five minutes was actually pretty good rugby from the Sharks, and we need to build on that. Playing a no-play game plan only got us so far – it will never win you trophies.

Look – the coaching staff need to sort out the scrums. You can’t win games if you loose three tightheads in a row. This game was won and lost in the scrum. That and indiscipline allowed the Stormers to get back into the game.

  • What a fickle bunch of fans you lot are, sometimes I get the impression that some people here are not actually sport fans, but are in actual fact only winner fans.

I criticized the performance against the Bulls for playing conservative kicking rugby and for departing from the type of rugby brendan venter said the Sharks would be playing this year.

Here is what Brendan Venter said:

“The path we have decided to venture down at the Sharks is going to prove more challenging, and is definitely the road less travelled, but it’s a route which could eventually reap huge rewards. As a collective, we must ask ourselves: Are we prepared to go down this path, dare to be different, and keep the faith in our processes?

As a rugby coach, I have never travelled down this road before but it’s important to note that I don’t just examine a singular performance or one-off result to inform my outlook. It’s actually about taking one step back in order to take two steps forward. This is a challenge facing coaches everywhere in the world and our sport is not the exception.

When you start working on a blend it takes a little while to find the ideal balance between a kicking and running game – the holy grail of rugby. The fact of the matter is that we got the blend wrong and the Cheetahs got it right, it’s as simple as that. As a team, we understand the risks involved in changing to a more attack-minded approach, and, as I alluded to earlier in the piece, I believe the result of an ultra-conservative style of play is any way a failure.”

I salute this approach by the Sharks and I acknowledge it will not be easy going from a Jake White style that might win you a few games but will never win you a tournament, to a ball in hand type rugby that will be entertaining to watch and in the long run will bring results. Sure the Sharks battled on Saturday and they looked disorganized and slightly clueless at times, but at least you could see they were keeping ball in hand instead of booting everything downfield as they did last year. Brendan Venter said this approach might involve taking a step back in order to take two steps forward, so hopefully this was our step back. To start harping back to a Jake White style of play is just absurd.

Having said this, even the most loyal Sharks fan has to admit there was something seriously wrong with our scrum on the weekend, so that is something that the coaches need to spend lots of time on this week.

  • It seems all the Sharks need to do is fix their handling, tackling, scrums, lineouts….eish i hope they got good tans watching Lambie kick for poles during preseason cos it seems thats all that was done properly.
The game plan of lets just out muscle them doesnt seem to be the best idea…and that was coming from my wife’s friend who doesnt watch much rugby. Maybe she should coach? Is there an application form?

  • @jonnow (Comment 277) : With Jannie and Beast back in the mix, the scrum will be a lot more solid. However we need to find quality tight head backup for Jannie – pity we did not loan Kock from the Pumas as well.

  • I was actually quite impressed with how the Sharks managed to stay in the first half and bar that lucky bounce try of the Stormers kept them out completely in the first half. If your set pieces don’t work on the day, you usually end up with a much larger deficit by half time.

I weren’t surprised when the wheels finally came off. You can’t win games or even stay in a game if your forwards are completely dominated like that.

  • I know we are trying to move away from our one-dimensional game plan, but surely our coaches understand that to be more creative you need to set a solid base first.

We want to move away from what Jake did last year, but I still believe Jake just built a solid base for our team to work from. If we could be half as good in our set-pieces, playing for field position, and building phases, than we were this time last year, we would have a better chance in succeeding in becoming a more enterprising team.

If we are not willing to work on our base first, the basics, then any attempts at being more enterprising will move us closer towards where the Cheethas and Lions have been in years gone by. Able to score plenty of fun and entertaining tries, but barely able to win more than a match or 2 in a season.

  • I should think we’ll be better again this week, but play more boring rugby than last.

  • @Letgo (Comment 281) : A solid set piece and using the width of the field on attack should not be mutually exclusive.

  • My last word on this is that Jake White coached teams won two world cup,yes the junior one is a world cup.He is one of a select group of coaches to win the World cup outside of his country .
In his first season in Aus he took the no hope Brumbies to the Super rugby final ,and last year we won 3 out of 4 in Australasia including for me what I regard as Natal rugby’s final moment, beating the Crusaders in Christchurch with 13 men. That was less than a year ago.
Can anyone tell me what Gary Gold has achieved that I must be totally in awe of him and blindly follow him without a word of criticsm as we lose more in 4 weeks than the Jake we demonise lost in a season.

  • A helluva lot can be said about the start to the season, as opposed to the Jake White era start; a helluva lot can be said about performances, tactics, defense, individual performances and a lot can be said about my foul language every time I saw Matt Stevens, but I am going to breathe, sigh and let go.

We have lost 3/4 – 75% of the games we have contested this season, and again, I breathe, sigh and let go.

Its up to the team: (players, coaches, management) its in the Sharks hands, and not one thing I say or do will change that. A helluva lot must change, but one thing won’t – dammit I love this team, and I know they have what it takes. My thoughts are with the boys who must be gutted for letting it slip into a landslide. I am here for them. And one positive voice is stronger than 1 000 000 negative ones, I am the proverbial protester standing against the tanks. Come on boys!
