Cheetahs in Oupa U-turn

Well, resting of Bok players is seemingly important, but not if you’re the Cheetahs…

Naka Drotske will have earned a big tick from SARU yesterday when he revealed that he’ll be resting Bok loose forward Oupa Mohoje for this week’s clash against the Sharks, only to change his mind on that less than 24 hours later and put the player right back into his starting team.

Apparently Tienie Burger is injured, necessitating a reshuffle. Call me crazy, but with Heinrich Brussow already in the squad (named on the bench) surely the Cheetahs could have come up with some plan for this weekend that didn’t involve reneging on the commitment that ALL the franchises signed up to?

Or will it be a case of “ag shame, they don’t have enough players because of poaching, so we’ll let this one slip”….

  • This is only their fourth game of the season. They don’t ‘have’ to rest him in this game. Don’t see what all the fuss is about?

  • 😀 enjoyed that!
Ive never felt sorry for Cheetahs union or fans for the poaching. Who’s fault is it they play in unmarketable strip in an empty stadium?

  • WOW so on the very first opportunity to fulfill the contract/agreement they break the deal? Funny how everyone was so up in arms when Jake did not rest his boks, he is still being criticized for that and that was not even a official agreement. What are the repercussions of breaking the agreement? If nothing then why would anyone care to honor it?

  • Are they counting the warmups games as well or just SR games for this resting deal?

  • I would play Brussouw anyways, you want to counter an obviously physically dominant loosie threat with an agile and experienced fetcher don’t you?

  • @Ben (Comment 5) : To rest the bok contracted players on every 5th game. But to be honest I haven’t been counting how many games Mohoje has played. My remark is just in general on those who would try to break the agreement.

  • Well actually Naka is not breaking any agreement yet. Oupa has not yet played 5 games in a row – this will only be his 4th game.

    – contracted Boks
    – contracted Boks plus extras in the squad who went to NH last year

  • As some have pointed out, the Cheetahs have not yet broken any agreements. They have only played 3 games and have already gad a bye, so Naka still has plenty of time to rest his Boks. He also has less of them, so no real problem for him…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 14) : I don’t think a bye counts as a rest week for a Bok. They are not allowed to play more than five games in a row, even if there was a bye in the middle.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 22) : Couple of points which are not very clear:
    1) “key” Springboks – who counts as key?

    2) “key players’ game time will exclude any matches in the Super Rugby Finals series as well as the bye weeks, while it was also agreed that no player will play more than five consecutive weeks”

I assume that key Boks cannot be excluded from playoffs even if they break the 5 game rule. They mention byes excluded but then talk about five consecutive weeks – not games.

  • point is, having decided to rest him (regardless of how many games he’s played) they should have followed through with that decision.

Dont see your issue, except that you might be annoyed you have to play against Oupa?

He’ll still get a rest – just not this week.

  • Mahoje is a good solid player…nothing spectacular but grafts hard in Super rugby- sometimes more so than when playing for the Boks. He is good around the fringes and at lineout time. Id def prefer if he was rested. Sharks need to scrap a win here by any means…even if it requires an 80m frans steyn penalty.
