According to an article on Sport24, SANZAR have opted to appeal against the ruling that found Frans Steyn not guilty of a tip tackle against the Chiefs
My views on said tackle are on record and have not changed. That aside, I think it’s frankly laughable for the ruling body of the competition to attempt to overturn the findings if their own judicial process.
I mean, seriously…. how many bites at this cherry are they allowed to have?
The appeal will be heard on Friday morning and should a ban now be applied, it would be hugely disruptive to the Sharks and their preparations for the weekend.
They had a chance to get this one right and they botched it. Time to take it on the chin and move on.

What a bloody joke. Maybe, while they’re at it, they should also appeal their decision not to take any further action against Messam after his strangle on Bothma??
Well what about messam getting off scot free! They should appeal that one too!!!!
Competitive sport has become a farce.very sad and theres more drama these days than enjoyment!
@Another Nick (Comment 1) : This
Can possibly bank on SANZAR getting Steyn at least a 1 match ban now
That is why I do not pay to watch rugby anymore.
@SheldonK (Comment 5) : It’s most likely that “personal” issue they have with Steyn.
Oh well it is SANZAR after all, if you think this is weird wait until the 2016 rugby season kicks off.
it is amazing how all of a sudden they can do this but highly disputed bad processes nothing happens. Time to start appealing the bands they give the kiwi’s and aussies
This is like something from xfiles mixed in with a horror movie!
If I were the Sharks I would play him regardless of what SANZAR concocted. It would probably mean some serious sanction but screw them anyway – they cant schedule a hearing hours before the kick off of a game knowing full well that they will be stuffing the player and the team around.
Let me guess, Angus Gardner is too traumatised to eat his corn flakes in the morning because his decision was overturned so to preserve his fragile make up they are going this route to try and appease him.
What a joke! I don’t disagree that he should have been carded but to cherry pick a single ruling and appeal it is frankly disgraceful.
What about appealing the light sentence handed to Liam Messam (again). He managed to get away with trying to choke Renaldo Bothma and yet they focus on something which was punished on the field.
Liam Messam’s choke – no ban, deserves at least 2 weeks.
Hika Elliots choulder charge into players head – 1 week, deserves at least 4.
Winger knee in Cobus Reinachs back – off field yellow, deserves at least 1 week.
Frans Steyn’s spear tackle – red card expunged, deserves at least 2 weeks.
So where is the consistency?
I agree with Rob, the spear tackle deserved a ban.
I don’t think Steyn meant to do it, but it’s not about the players intention, it’s about the tackle itself. Just because Cruden was able to brace himself with his forearm, before making contact with his shoulders/neck and then Steyn’s full body weight ending up on him, doesn’t mean it wasn’t dangerous and could have ended very seriously for Cruden.
I don’t know how much players usually get for spear tackles, especially if you ended up with your weight on top of the player and I don’t know if other players involved in the tackle would soften this sanction, but I still don’t think the correct ruling is no ban at all.
I also agree that it is ridiculous that they would nit pick this sanction when so many other sanctions are absolutely just as wrong as this one.
In law, once found innocent of a crime, you cannot be recharged with that crime. The same should apply to this judicial process!
If they are going to appeal this one, it may only be a reissue of the red card and probably not a ban. However, they should then also appeal the decision on Messam’s incident. That decision was outrageous. He should have received 4 weeks, and that’s even after considering the “mitigating factors” that they talked about!
I have no words…
This just seems silly
So with Lambie being rested, and now this hanging over Frans’ head, preperation for the 10/12 roles can’t easy, especially when u dont know who u can play. this is a joke, move on already Sanzar and stop trying to stuff us around
IF they do decide to be complete toss faces and ban him, then I suppose it will be Esterhuizen at 12, Fred at 10?
I can only see the verdict being overturned to guilty, with the on-field red deemed as sufficient punishment, and no further sanction required.
this is seriously crap. i already said what i think of their decision on messam’s actions. and now they are out to punish frans again. personally i feel this is purily to stuff the sharks coz after clearing frans in the first place they knew we would include him in our plans for this coming week then they waited till we confirmed that lambie wont play before they decided tto appeal this matter and sat the date for mere hours before the game that messes the player and the game plan up completely.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 21) : I agree, I don’t see this being more than that. It would be totally unacceptable to ban him from playing on a Friday before the game.
@Stiko85 (Comment 22) : Hence I have always said, the sooner we leave SANZAR the better for us.
Super 15, and soon to be Super 18 is way over rated, and have nothing good to it. Most boring comp in the world.
New Zealand SANZAR justice for Messam. According to SANZAR His arm “slipped” around Bothma’s neck. From what I saw he was on the ground, not in mid tackle. And he deliberately put his arm around his neck then locked the choke with the second arm and pulled upwards. How much “tackling” do yo still need to do once a man and the ball and yourself are already on the ground? They don’t want set a precedent at this level? Bullshit. When is anyone ever going to do something about their one sided rulings that always favour NZ? As I recall Aus and SA are also SANZAR?
I agree let’s leave SANZAR why should we be a member? Its for their (NZ) benefit both financially and for team betterment that they HAVE to play us. We can happily ply NH teams and we will meet them in world cups. SANZAR is totally corrupt and NZ controlled.
Irrespective of the outcome of the witch hunt, I’d like to see Marco Wentzel captain the side this Saturday.
I think he will have the same calming effect on the players around him, that Lambie had this past Saturday.
The boys with tempers should stay away from any and all captaincy.
Please give me links to the sanzar big chiefs’ twitter and facebook accounts. I want to spam them with BS!
Heard that Bothma will start at openside flank (6) du Preez at 7, Kanko at 8 and Esterhuyzen at 12 with Frans at 10 (if they clear him to play)
1: Beast
2: Cooper
3: Jannie
4: Botha
5: Wentzel
6: Bothma
7: du Preez
8: Kanko
9: Hoffman
10:Frans
11:Mvovo
12:Esterhuyzen
13:JPP
14:Odwa
15:SP
16:Hadebe
17:Tank
18:Lourens
19:Giant
20:Kaya
21:Ungerer
22:Fred
23:Sbura
Glad to see the conspiracy theorists out in force today.
End of the day… it was a tip tackle and they are clearly banned… and he does have a bit of form too…
And lets not forget he laughed… 😉
@willemv10 (Comment 29) : Frans should be at 15 with JPP moving in to wing for Odwa, who needs a rest. Sbura in at 13 Fred at 10. Hoffman as starting scrummie??? Tera at 7. I would also start Giant and have Botha play from bench. SP to make space for Heimar Williams on the bench.
Is a pastor allowed to say “A***HOLES?!”
@VinChainSaw (Comment 30) : end of the day he was initially cleared…
@pastorshark (Comment 32) : That was my subjective word on the matter. Here is my attempt at an objective word:
– If the decision by Mr Lubbe was a shocker, SANZAR should have the right to appeal it.
– However, any appeal should not so negatively affect a team’s preparation for a game. The appeal should take place next week and any punishment then apply for following games. Stuffing a team around on (and all week until) a Friday is unacceptable.
– If they do this now then I would demand to see consistency in such matters. Then Liam Messam’s punishment should also be appealed. And the same should happen with laughable decision in future.
@pastorshark (Comment 34) : OK, so I get that even that attempt at objectivity got more subjective as I went. I’m just a bit peeved. So maybe I should stick with my original comment: A***HOLES!!!
@pastorshark (Comment 32) : yes but only when referring to Sanzar and SA rugby bosses.
@JD (Comment 36) : That’s what I thought…
@VinChainSaw (Comment 30) : Why did we expect anything pro-Sharks from you?
Which team do you actually support?
@VinChainSaw (Comment 30) : if he’s guilty he should be band. However I feel what is needed is consistency in their decisions and that’s not happening!!!!
@StevieS (Comment 38) : The team that won the SR cup at the beginning of March already…. 😉
@JD (Comment 39) : I think that’s what everyone is asking for. Nobody is complaining about Bissie’s ban.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 40) : Stormers?
@StevieS (Comment 42) : See, we all know who they are 😆
This is all bullshit!
don’t know what you are all getting hot under the collar for we beat the Chifs without him and his school pal,the Force will be a piece of cake.At least it should cut down on the stoppages
I am amazed that one of you SP apologists hasn’t suggested him at 10.
@The hound (Comment 45) : It’s the principle, hound, the principle!! 😎
Reading the comments again I see that far too many people are using the word “choke” and a word that sounds almost like it…”joke.”
Guys and girls, that is a very inappropriate word to be using this week!! 😥
@The hound (Comment 45) :
Exactly.
@JD (Comment 39) :
Consistency wouldve been banning him though? So in that respect it was Jannie Lubbe who erred and SANZAR are just correcting an obviously errant decision.
And before you all start howling about Messam’s choke – a choke is nowhere near as dangerous as a tip tackle.
@StevieS (Comment 38) :
I actually quite like the Sharks and much of what i say on this site is in jest.
Except that i quite dislike both Steyn and Bismarck.
I just dont like a) a shitty attitude and b) a dirty player.
Buy yeah, I’m a WP man originally.
There is also the liability issue for sanzar.
If they let stand, without review, what appears to be a ridiculous error, it could cost them considerably later on in injury lawsuits.
This case could become evidence of “wanton disregard for player safety”.
If they are allowed to do this, then surely they must also revisit and appeal tries that should not have been scored after a match????
Let’s hope the Sharks have a very good lawyer
If he is banned will it be active from this weekend or next weekend, IRB/WR normally it is the next weekend when they contest the outcome of a hearing
@SharksRTB (Comment 52) : That is just silly they didn’t changed anything that happened in the match
@VinChainSaw (Comment 50) : Bismarck a dirty player you must be joking, it is the first time since 2008 he has been cited 😈
@BR (Comment 56) :
Aha. Yeah bro, hang your hat on that if you must.
I anyway didnt say he was the dirty one… that was all you mate… 😉
@BR (Comment 54) :
I understand it be next weekend. But i could be wrong.
I’d be rather surprised if he was actually banned – i think it mre likely they’ll just reinstate the red card.
@SharksRTB (Comment 52) :
I dont quite follow your logic.
New Zealand teams are the best in the world, let’s face it. As long as we are in SANZAR, we are keeping up with the best. Joining Europe would see the start of SA’s downfall, I reckon. I’m quite happy being in the toughest and most entertaining competition globally. What we NEED to be doing is petitioning for SANZAR to redesign the competition that they have proposed from next year on.
@David12246 (Comment 60) : NZ is the best because the play against the best all the time. Without SA the physicality of them would drop. They need us more than we need them. Remember our Currie Cup and youth talent base far exceeds the kiwi’s and aussies.
@Dunx (Comment 61) : Are you sure the currie cup have that more talent than the itm cup I am not sure , but I do agree if SA ever leave SANZAR they will have trouble because they will be stuck with only the Aussies as decent opponents
I see jean Deysel is back in the Sharks side and he will be captaining the team this weekend.
ridiculous
Wow ok – so they are appealing their own outcome? A new low for sanzar
@RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 65) : Not really, it’s exactly the same as the State appealing against what they say was an incorrect verdict in the Oscar Pistorius case. As long as Sanzar’s rules allow for it. Obviously not ideal to have the hearing the day before a match, and in fairness, if there is a ban it should only come into effect after this weekend’s match.
@jonnow (Comment 66) : Ohhh I see now – thx for explanation 😉
Yeah should there be a ban it would hopefully only come into effect next week.
So Frans’ retrial has been moved to next Tuesday…meaning he will definitely play this weekend.
