The Sharks team to take on the Crusaders this weekend has been announced with the three expected changes to the starting line-up.

Patrick Lambie comes back into the side in place of Frans Steyn and also takes over the captaincy from Jean Deysel. Cobus Reinach replaces Conrad Hoffman who takes his place back on the bench, with Stefan Ungerer dropping out. And Marcell Coetzee comes back into the starting line-up with Renaldo Bothma losing out in this instance.

A number of changes has also been made to the bench, with Matt Stevens making his first return to the side since that forgettable outing against the Stormers. Franco Marais also gets his first call to the match 23 this season, the 22 year old replaces Monde Hadebe on the bench and will get his first taste of Super Rugby if he gets a chance to take the field.

Gary Gold had high praise for this weekends opposition, “The Crusaders are a fantastic team, loaded with All Blacks. They have not won this competition as many times as they have by accident. They can never be taken lightly and we all know what a dangerous side they are when they hit their straps.

“It’s fantastic to play against a team of this quality; every team wants to be measured against the best. We are confident with our group of players and are excited about the match-up this weekend.”

On Tuesday, The Sharks launched their legacy campaign ‘Sharks Forever Fans’, which sees The Sharks team up with the Organ Donor Foundation of South Africa to raise awareness and promote the need for organ donation, which ultimately saves lives.
To launch this initiative, the Cell C Sharks will be wearing a limited edition jersey for their match against the Crusaders this Saturday. After the match these jerseys will be auctioned to raise funds for the project.

15. SP Marais

  • Thanks Letgo. I reckon we can klap them; we just need to play a bit more clinical and execute better. Having Pat back is a huge boost. I don’t think we realise the massive impact he makes in the team, captain or not. Add Marcel and Cobus, and suddenly we will be much more dangerous than last week.

  • I would not be sad if Stevens gets no game time. Good team otherwise.

  • This might be just me, but when is Heimar getting another chance? I know the coaches would prefer at the moment to change as little as possible, since the are swopping 9 and 10 again this week, but I think he offers much more on spreading the ball. Esterhuizen is good, just think we need a little more unpredictability against the Saders. Apart from that, this does look like a team that can beat them at home (or beat themselves again as well…) 😉

  • This Murray over Sithole thing is a little annoying for me. I know the coaches see them up close, but Murray just hasn’t inspired that…that something special.

  • @HeinF (Comment 3) : I think the difference is their defense. They offer something equal but different on attack. It’s in the defense that Esterhuizen offers more. Heimar makes his tackles, but Esterhuizen bosses the tackle and makes positive tackles. Anyway that’s what I’m seeing.

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 6) : I think you are spot on.

It’s frustrating how little we’ve seen of Andre on attack (my feeling is that they’re actually playing away from him to shield him a little and help him settle) but on defence, he is doing superbly.

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 6) : That is true, he does go in hard for the tackles, which will help this weekend. At least with Frans missing for a few weeks, the young guys will get some time in the position to get more use to it. @robdylan (Comment 7) : Think that is why I don’t really rate him on attack I have only seen him get the ball about 2 times 😉 He did play flyhalf for a while, so I’m guessing he is more than just a one trick pony that tries to bash through the defense with his size. Here is to hoping we get to see some of that this weekend!

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 6) : @robdylan (Comment 7) : Agree fully, Andre is being cut out of the loop, he is better than being given credit for, I hope our outside defense holds up on Odwa’s side with the big wing of the Saders who will test our defense.

  • I don’t see us prevailing here. Will be happy with some enterprising rugby though.

  • I see most pundits are saying we are the favourites, 🙄 then backing us to lose, like Tank Lanning, 👿

Hopefully we can prove them wrong.

  • I would rather see Sithole on 13 than JP. JP to move to wing at the moment all JP is doing is defending nothing creative. put him where he is effective and give Sithole chance to grow. We are giving grandpa Stevens a chance why not Sbura?

  • @Big Fish (Comment 10) : Yup. Sharks game not refined enough to withstand Saders. Not by a long shot. Not yet.
