Sharks to lose Deysel, Lambie

Neither has yet been confirmed, but the Sharks look likely to be without both Pat Lambie and Jean Deysel for a month at least.

Additional loss of personnel is the last thing the team needs after taking an almighty smack against the Crusaders; that’s exactly what’s going to happen though.

Deysel’s disciplinary hearing has been announced and having already served time for a red card offence in the corresponding match against the Crusaders last year, it’s foolish to think he’ll get any time off for good behaviour this time around. His latest red card will see a ban of somewhere in the region of 4-6 weeks.

Lambie sustained an injury in the second half of Saturday’s match and while there’s been no confirmation yet, the talk is that he’ll also be looking at 4-6 weeks on the sidelines.

  • Pity about form flanks are bothma & coetzee tho. Would like a backline shuffle. 11. Willson 12. Esterhuizen, 13. Sithole, 14. Pieterson, 15. Mvovo

  • Who will be the captain now? What i noticed whilst i was at the game is that south african captains need to improve at ref management. So often read was talking with the ref and our captain wasnt chatting to him.not a poke at lambie it is just something all our teams dont do.

  • Sharks need a massive clearout of players. A lot of these guys are either not good enough or are not pulling their weight.

My list would be: Hoffman (not good enough), Lionel Cronje (not up to it), Stevens (poor signing and past it), Adriaanse (not shown enough at Sharks), Cooper (spending so much time as Bissie’s understudy hasn’t helped him, not performing when asked to start), Kanko (a move could be good for him), Murray (past his best, injuries have caught up with him), Chavhanga (way past his best).

  • On top of this, we probably need a clearout of coaching staff. Ideally, could do with a top quality scrum coach as a starting point and a backline coach with flair that can get our backs firing. A decent defensive organiser is another who should be high on the list

  • @Seth101 (Comment 8) : Look Gary Gold is no fool and as head coach am sure expects to take the rap for such a shocking performance. We, as fans, have a right to be angry both with the lack of discipline and complete lack of commitment in defence. However having said this, we also need to give Gold time to transform the whole structure at the Sharks and make his mark on the team.

I can tell you he is a very thorough coach and an excellent tactician. Results and performances haven’t been good but we still need to support him and give him a chance to prove his qualities. His real strength is building structures and I can assure fellow Sharks supporters that given time, he will transform the union from the bottom up. The youth system will be transformed and improved. It’s not like they have been in great shape for the past few years under Jake White and previous coaches. It’s a massive job that no coach in the world could change overnight. I accept that he will be judged on first team results (after all that’s what fans go to the stadium for) and these simply have to improve.

Most disappointing for me has been the idiotic lack of discipline from some of our senior players. I mean Bissie, Frans Steyn and Jean Deysel are experienced players who really should know better. They have let down, the supporters, their team mates and the coaching team. Hopefully they are absolutely hammered in private (the coach HAS to come out and support his players in public)!

  • I am all for giving Gold a chance to sort out the unholy mess the Sharks is at present – but fear that the real problem (the lack of management skills by John Smit) will not be dealt with.

What is needed is to start cleaning up the mess created by White and Smit now. Send the Smit geriatric friends (Botha, Wentzel, Stevens and Murray) on a permanent holiday and go through the Vodacom Cup players and see whether there are players – both in the Sharks set-up and the other Vodacom Cup teams countrywide – who should not be brought into the system as soon as possible.

Another key player the Sharks need desperately is Paul Jordaan. When will he be back?

  • @Morné (Comment 12) : Exactly Morne. It doesn’t help any team to keep chopping and changing the head coach every season. Gold needs time to bring in the players he believes will improve the Sharks. It doesn’t happen overnight. I followed very closely his transformation at Bath and he left them in an infinitely better position than when he joined. The fruits of his labour are being enjoyed now.

  • Regarding Gold – I know he probably needs to be cut some slack, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. I read an article on rugby365, where Gold was quoted as saying that these were “isolated incidents” refering to the 3 red cards in 2 games. Now, immediately when I read those 2 words together, I conclude that either Gold is an idiot who does not know the meaning of the word isolated and didn’t realise that by refering to incidents in the plural he just made his own statement null and void OR he knows exactly what he said to the press and believes all Sharks fans are idiots that eat up the garbage coming out of his mouth.

  • @Michael (Comment 14) : Agree that there are plenty of issues that need addressing. I’m sure Gary Gold didn’t realise how big the job was when he first joined. He clearly needs to show his leadership skills by addressing the discipline problems on the field and by lighting fires under the bums of underperforming higher profile players. Bringing through some hungry players from the Vodacom Cup teams in place of established names, may be a solution.

I don’t like him, he might be extremely sharp stategically, but the lack of cohesion and heart during this past game, leaves me concerned that he’s just not up to the job of being both motivator and strategist – perhaps that’s why his previous roles over the last few years has mostly been in an advisory capacity. The sh!t has already hit the fan in the Sharks camp, how they react now, should probably not be done to save their season, but rather their pride. Lord knows their last 2 games have reflected terribly on South African rugby.

Where did he demonstrate these skills you credit him with, in Japan,England,Western Province.None of them gave him three seasons,in fact why don’t you list his C.V. for us.
Sharks problems are immediate not long term, there is no team, just a bunch of individuals, running the show for their own individual needs.
This team needs some serious discipline, and that is what Jake White tried to instill and why he was canned, because certain players wanted to run the show.
Nobody should be surprised because it was stated here time and again,Jake White was disliked by the players, who rejected his attempts at discipline
Coaches don’t coach skills at this level,by the time a player is playing Super rugby he should have mastered his game.
Coaches are there to pick, match and manage the players into a single cohesive team. With asingle mind set, goals and above all a desire to play for each other.
One look at that miserable bunch under the posts after another try had been scored on Saturday will tell you how far from that truth we are.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 26) : When Muir joined the Sharks, he was mostly unknown for his coaching – yet he got us the closest to winning SR.

Plum was never a head coach (as far as I know) before he became head coach at the Sharks, he got us a few CC’s and also nearly got us over the line in SR.

When HM became head coach at the Bulls, he was basically a failure (can’t remember the exact history, but he sucked pretty bad at two former gigs).

So past experience to my mind does not count for anything…I want to see what he can do with the Sharks – on his own terms (own assistants etc)

  • It would help tremendously if Gold had a record of achieving success for us all to fall back on, but unfortunately he does not have anything reaching beyond mediocre. Are you seriously willing to bet he is the right man?? Any team which has 50 points shipped past them at home has problems and I’m not sure Gold is the man who can change it. Ultimately questions must be asked of the person or persons responsible for his appointment and the appointment of his school coaches. The issues go wider too, we have purchased pathetic players not up to Sharks standard for several years now.

  • Whether you believe Gold is the right man for the job or not, surely he deserves some time before being judged? As some have mentioned previously, the Sharks have made some extremely poor signings over the last couple of seasons and our junior teams have struggled as well.

I could go back to Plumtrees last season at the Sharks and if you dig out all the comments on here, the majority of people were sick of him and suggested he HAD to go. We can’t have it every way. If we sack a coach and get someone else in, surely we then need to give that new coach some time to turn things round? If not, there will be no stability as it will be a revolving door with coaching appointments and players in and out.
Remember all coaches have different opinions on certain players and most of the players Gold is now working with were brought in by previous regimes

  • Despite my support for Gold, I’m just as frustrated by the shocking and unacceptable performance against an average Crusaders side. It simply wasn’t acceptable and as the head coach, he has to take responsibility. However the players also have to take their fair share. Decision making on the pitch was brainless on Saturday. I mean at one stage we had 14 against 12, yet we kicked away possession. I also believe Fonotia was fortunate to only get a yellow card, could quite easily have been red. Then Deysel has a brain implosion. That really was unforgivable.

  • @The hound (Comment 35) : To me it seems as though the coaching staff is not exactly gelling as a unit…BMH and Everitt worked well with Venter.

They didn’t seem to work too well with JW – nobody seemed to work well with JW.

From the CC it was obvious that, by themselves, BMH, Everitt and Anthony is not up to the job – they need guidance (I’d prefer assistant coaches of Plum’s standard, but that’s just me).

Gold joined the team way too late, so the team started the season under Venter (as to your question regarding Venter, I would assume that he is currently completely focused on Saracens and their play-offs) and then had to change lanes to Gold – that seems to have been a major failure….

…and my questions are: are the assistant coaches able to work together with the DOR, and do the players respect or buy into the coaching style and gameplan put together by the entire management team.

Sadly, all of the above is guess work and conjecture, because the Sharks are ever keen to apologise, but are dead set on keeping any (even the smallest morsel of info would go a long way) real info regarding the problems and solutions as far away from the public – very frustrating.

  • Comment 39, posted at 06.04.15 23:10:53 by FireTheLooser Reply

  • What is annoying me is the influence that Venter has at the moment. I don’t see any of “Venter-factor” in this team.

His articles on SuperSport generally have excellent points, but they are in direct contradiction to what the Sharks are doing at the moment.

In those articles he states that he believes the game has evolved and the need for younger and more dynamic players far outweighs the need for older, vastly experienced players. One of his big topics is dynamic ball carriers – something he says we lack at the Bok level.

Despite this we still select old, as well as sluggish players, in Stevens and Esterhuizen and co. Esterhuizen is not a dynamic ball carrier – Sithole is.
We have pace at our disposal and we don’t select it. Whether his influence is not that strong or he is simply contradicting himself I can obviously not say.

My team vs Lions would then be: (if only to fire a warning shot to the prima donnas)

    1. Beast
    2. Cooper
    3. Adrianse
    4. Botha
    5. Wentzel (haven’t been following the junior locks)
    6. Coetzee
    7. Bothma
    8. Mtembu (I recall him being a good lineout jumper, right??)
    9. one of the youngsters
    10. Zeilinga
    11. Wilson/Mvovo
    12. Williams
    13. Sithole
    14. JPP
    15. Wilson/Mvovo

    16. Hadebe
    17. Jannie
    18. Thomas (does he cover TH as well??)
    19. [locks]
    20. Kanko
    21. [young scrummy]

If u or I apply for a leadership position, we don’t fire the management team that report to us, we r expected to work alongside them and gain the best out of them and the team at our disposal. The same needs to apply here. Let’s see the leadership of the Sharks performance managing the ‘dead wood’ and see the strengths of the talented players and coaches being brought to the fore . This, in my mind would b a sign of good leadership.

Someone has to be accountable- yes the players but also the Head Coach/ Director whatever you want to call him. Every other SA side shows a clear gameplan, even if some sides arent executing it 100%. There is zero evidence of a Sharks gameplan and there hasnt been 1 for quite some time. The Sharks rely purely on individuals which we have seen come 2nd best against a well drilled team. Its a very tricky path from here…and we still have to tour where it could get ugly. Step 1. Implement a game plan…any game plan even if its kicking the ball a lot. Step 2. Appoint a strong leader. Step 3. Hold players accountable for lack of discipline, not just cards but also penalty counts.

I cannot believe what I have been witnessing. We have a proverbial Everest to climb; and I can only hope and pray we have the guts, courage, balls and character to climb. The media is crawling all over us, the shots are being fired at Smit and Gold and the weak underbelly is being stabbed from every which way. Things are ugly. Us as fans are feeling angry and vulnerable and it feels like our beloved Union is in tatters, lets stand together as fans and demand some clear and concise action. We are fans, which makes us a volatile collection of pessimists, realists, optimists and if left to our own devices without some real reasons to believe we can start a revolt. I have been a Sharks fan since I can remember and I fell in love with them when we lifted the Currie Cup trophy with Craig Jamieson when I was a kid, now I am older than the players and look at the game differently, but the deep love and passion is still there. I have stood by through thick and thin, but never has my devotion been so tested, never.
