“Who here can touch the lions?” asks Johnny Clegg. When it comes to the UKZN Impi Varsity Shield team, the answer is a resounding “nobody”.

On a day when black clouds obscured any prospect of light threatening to improve the mood of rugby fans in KwaZulu-Natal, the intrepid Impi strode bravely into a Varsity Shield Final that few expected them to win and emerged with a well deserved trophy, after beating the previously unvanquished Wits 29-21.

With star young flyhalf Innocent Radebe pulling the strings, scoring one of the four tries on the night and adding a further six points via two conversions, it was the visitors who started the stronger and held on the longer, braving a late fightback from the hosts who had beaten them twice already in regular season contests. In fact, so embarrassing was the first match, when Impi conceded 60 points to Wits at home, that yesterday’s result would have been almost impossible to predict.

And yet, the young Impi side showed the value of a group of hungry young men playing committed rugby for each other, with no big names, no ego’s and no stars. Rugby can often be a very simple game, with the real strength in unit often found in how well they work as a team on grass, rather than how many accolades are associated with the list of names on the team sheet.

Our hats are well off to Ryan Strudwick, captain Lwazi Ngcungama and the rest of the Impi team! Thank you for showing us the way.

FNB Wits:
Tries: Damba, Beckerling, Kelly
Cons: Hewitt 3

Tries: Ngcungama, De Beer, Radebe, Visagie
Cons: Radebe 2, Dube

  • Very well done. They looked like a good, happy team and played great entertaining rugby as well. Take a bow Ryan Strudwick and the coaching team.
I reckon that Radebe and Marius Louw have the goods to go a lot further.

  • Lot’s of energy in that game yesterday and you could hear these guys cheering each other on…and they also pulled together as a team when an individual made a mistake.

That is what team culture is all about.

  • So does this mean they qualify for the Varsity Cup?

  • Well done Impi!!!
@Dragnipur (Comment 4) : No. Promotion only happens every second year. I have read somewhere that coach Strudwick actually prefers this, as he feels the boys need another year of prep work before they are ready for the cup, and seeing how the other Shield teams have done when playing up there (TUT, WITS, CUT), I can understand why

  • I had a chat to centre Marcel Coetzee (the other one!) last night. He said it was a genuinely tough game…and they are all so chuffed with the result. I’ll line up an interview with him and coach Strudders (both of whom are born and bred here in our area) in the coming week!
