UKZN managed to win their very first Varsity Shield. They faced a Wits side that was yet to taste defeat and it was a tall order. The question now is where to next for the IMPI? I spoke to their humble, driven and courageous leader. Captain Lwazi Ngcungama tells us about the season, building on this piece of history and their Varsity Cup dream!

Benedict: Hi, how are you?

Lwazi: I am well, thank you.

Benedict: What a year for you boys. What does it mean to you guys to not only win the Varsity Shield but also for the first time in the Varsity’s history?

Lwazi: It is an amazing feeling to be the first Varsity team to have won the Shield campaign because we worked very hard from pre-season to in-season for one goal and to have finally achieved it as a squad was just magical.

Benedict: The mission is to have a KZN representative in the Varsity Cup. Considering there is just a handful of survivors from last year. Are you guys ready to build on this win next season as a squad?

Lwazi: The majority of the squad this year was made up of youngsters who will still be around next year and since it is a promotion year we will be looking to build on this win for a better performance next year.

Benedict: Is there some disappointment that there is no promotion this season?

Lwazi:I can say there were some disappointments but we still had to overcome them and pull off this win in order to stay in contention for next years campaign.

Benedict: You scored a try in the match against UJ (University of Johannesburg) last year, and managed another this season. You have a fever for the white line in big games?

Lwazi: Yeah it’s always good to score tries but it’s all credit to the other 14 men on the field with me.

Benedict: It’s finally happened this season, what do you attribute to finally getting it right?

Lwazi: The team culture was a major factor this season, guys wanted to play for each other and it it showed on the field.

Benedict: From a personal point of view, where to next for your rugby career?

Lwazi: I really don’t know hey, I’ll be playing for Impi in the upcoming Moor Cup and hopefully one day with the good Lord’s grace I can get to wear that black and white Sharks jersey hey.

Benedict: If you were to pick one moment that defined your season. What was it?

Lwazi: I have to say this past final game where I could see that the boys were really hungry for this win and it happened, we won and it was amazing.

Benedict: Thanks Lwazi, enjoy the celebrations!

Lwazi:Pleasure bro!

Waiting for the announcement of our 4th captain of the season, although it seems Rob might have spoiled the surprise, what him revealing that Marco Wentzel will be at the press conference with Gary Gold later this week.

Im interested to know how his views on the 2 coaches that he has had over the last 2 years, particularly how he found it playing under Mitchell. Im sure that they were a very happy group under Strudwick – it showed in their game on Monday.
