Props to rest?

It’s not something you really want to be reminded of, of course, but SARU’s player management agreement hasn’t gone away and hte Sharks do still have a few Springboks in their midst who are neither suspended nor injured at present.

Both Beast Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis have started consecutively for four weeks, meaning a mandatory rest is on the cards next week at the very latest. With that week coinciding with the Bulls’ visit to Kings Park, it might make sense for the Sharks to rather consider giving them this week off, in order to have them available for that must-win game.

It’s a tough call, of course, since you can argue that the Sharks really can’t afford to lose this week either. Then again, with fans close to the point of accepting that once again, this year just isn’t going to be our year there’s no real case for not resting these guys sooner rather than later.

You never know – maybe the likes of Dale Chadwick, Thomas du Toit and Lourens Adriaanse will sniff a real opportunity to stake a claim and prove that there really is life beyond the Bok stalwarts.

  • A little bit off the subject but if there was one player in the beginning of the season that I would of thought to have been dirty it was Jannie. However the guy has just gone about his business and hasn’t played bad rugby.kept a cool head for most of the season as well

Shouldn’t we be shaping our currie cup team as I do believe us ending anything lower than second will be a problem. We travel late and then have to travel again.

  • Easy decision then isn’t it? I would do it and give Thomas a go vs Redelinghuys 😈

  • @RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 2) : Yup at the moment its not like we can play worse, so take this time and rotate/rest.

  • Rob, is there any official news on Lambie? Although I take your word as pretty official, I was just wondering if anything has been confirmed by the Sharks?

  • @Letgo (Comment 4) : oh shit, sorry Maria.

I kind of assumed my word was good enough 🙂

The Sharks have confirmed a neck vertebra injury that will keep him sidelined for 6 weeks, but won’t require surgery.

Ill be happy if they rest as much as possible going forward. They will be critical for possible / hopeful World Cup success.

Sharks can always try again next year. Springboks can only try again in 4 years.

  • The irony of the situation is that the best front row in the country is the Lion’s one.
If anyone should be rested it is they.

I think the irony in that statement is that they still wont be wearing GnG later this year.

  • Is it necessary to rest both props simultaneously? What about Beast this week and Jannie next week?

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 12) : That’s just what I was thinking…especially with Franco probably getting his first start at hooker this weekend. I reckon Jannie’s strength and experience will be important!! Thomas and Chadwick are more than capable to stand in for Beast this week…

  • @SharksRTB (Comment 7) : screw that. I’d be far more ecstatic with the Sharks winning Super Rugby than the Boks winning the RWC.

But the Sharks are not going to do it this year pal, that’s for damn sure.

It pains me that all these Johnny come lately teams such as the Chiefs, Reds, Waratahs and Bulls have got there grubby mitts on the trophy before the Sharks. Looking like the Hurricanes may go on and do it too… what’s holding the Sharks back EVERY year?

  • @Feather (Comment 14) : Self-belief would be my first guess. They’ve had some good campaigns in the last few years but either lose games they’re expected to win or run out of mental steam during the playoffs.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 15) : The continuous Habit of losing the “easier” games and only playing with full commitment and Focus when our backs are against the walled has tripped us up again and again…and continues to do so…and is extremely frustrating…and is probably behind most calls to employ some sort of “kopdokter”…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 16) : Losing the easy games have hurt us each time in term of where we play in the playoffs.
