Further heartbreak in Kokstad

There was no joy for Sharks fans in any competition this weekend, with the Sharks XV going down badly to Free State in Saturday’s Vodacom Cup fixture in Kokstad.

Just like their senior counterparts, these Sharks lost due to a flurry of second-half tries, with Free State number 8 Vince Jobo scoring twice in 6 minutes to undo all the good work their hosts had put in to get in front.

Coenie van Wyk, the former Pumas and Lions Super Rugby player who moved to the cheetahs this year, scored the opener, but that was quickly matched by a try to Dan du Preez. Inny Radebe missed the conversion, but otherwise matched van Wyk’s two penalties and the Sharks XV trailed by just two at the break. Flanker Khaya Majola scored ten minutes into the second half to finally hand his side the lead, before Jobo’s brace no long after eclipsed any hope of a win.

Scrumhalf Shaun Venter rubbed salt into the wounds with the bonus-point score just before half time, consigning the Sharks XV to a second successive loss and a lowly sixth-spot on the South section log, well out of the play-off race after just three rounds.

Sharks XV 18 (11): Tries: Daniel Du Preez, Khaya Majola. Conversion: Innocent Radebe. Penalties: Radebe (2)
Free State XV 35 (13): Tries: Vincent Jobo (2), Coenie van Wyk, Shaun Venter. Conversions: Van Wyk (3). Penalties: Van Wyk (3).

  • I imagine there have been plenty of disruptions to this side due to injuries in the senior team though?

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Apparently no …. lol .but i suspect he went as FH cover rather than FB . Goosen is no longer with the Cheetahs Think he would have done better staying with the pumas (Lions)

  • @Zibbie (Comment 4) : Well would he have gotten more game time at the Lions?

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 6) : I don’t think so.

Maybe you guys should send Willie our way. The Cheetahs are a bit overstocked with 10’s and 15’s. 😈

  • @bchanakira2 (Comment 8) : Better the young guys experience rugby at this level than losing with a bunch of disgruntled seniors.

They might as well stick with these guys…just send Ungerer to the SR team, and start Wright for the XV.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 10) : That’s fine. Then we will trade Blommetjies and Brummer for Willie?
