Bok props to face Bulls

Springbok props Tendai Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis return to the Sharks starting lineup this week, in the only changes to the team that went down narrowly in Johannesburg last Saturday.

Gary Gold has bolstered his side with the two battled hardened forwards, but has otherwise kept faith in the outfit that despite not beating the Lions, nevertheless showed great fighting spirit in defeat. Dale Chadwick and Lourens Adriaanse both lose their spots, perhaps a little unfairly given how they performed. Adriaanse replaces Matt Stevens on the bench, while Chadwick drops out altogether.

Renaldo Bothma continues at number 8, with Ryan Kankowski given another week to recover from the knee injury that saw him withdraw on the eve of the Ellis Park clash.

Odwa Ndungane, a surprise success at fullback last week, continues in the position, with SP Marais coming onto the bench in place of Jack Wilson and Kyle Cooper are again not in the 23.

Sharks: 15 Odwa Ndungane, 14 S’bura Sithole, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Renaldo Bothma, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Marco Wentzel (captain), 4 Mouritz Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Monde Hadebe, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Giant Mtayanda, 20 Etienne Oosthuizen, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Lionel Cronje, 23 SP Marais

  • Very interesting to see SP benched.. But good on Odders! He had a great game. Not going to harp on S’bu not being picked on 13 etc. since it is apparent that the majority of Sharks fans obviously see it differently than the coaches do. πŸ˜•

  • To be fair the Bulls side is better on paper…which possibly isnt a bad thing. The Bulls will come at us with up and unders and hard running so we will have to both front up on defense and make sure our support lines for the guy contesting the up and under is good. And please lets not make the same mistake and drift too early from the ruck fringes…i did say please

  • If we play like last week and Fred slots his kicks like we know he can it should be a damn good game! Lets hope they worked on defence, since the bulls are certainly going to hit the gap they found close to the ruck quite a lot.

And pretty sure they are going to try to bust through midfield as well, Odwa is going to have to cover damn well since there is some problems there. And Kriel will run our aimless kicks back to us all day, and he’s looking damn dangerous. Scramble defence for the win!

Sharks by 15, but then I always say Sharks by 15.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 14) : Yes they are. The Sharks are where the Bulls were about a year or so ago. Stuck in an out dated game plan and using the same players. There were no surprises and no dynamic ball carriers. Look at them now- they have adjusted and varied their game plan whilst still incorporating their strengths. They have young, quick and dynamic players that both get them over the advantage line and keep the ball alive. They are fit and play at a high tempo with these players. Ive been impressed by the Bulls change in attitude

  • @SheldonK (Comment 17) : Same here. They have a knack of knowing what their strengths are and sticking with them, but adapt to the game around those strengths (albeit slowly at times).

They also acquire young players who will build on their foundations.

I once watched a documentary on the Progress Rugby Club in the Cape, who beat Maties in the 2006 National Club Championships. The captain explained rugby in the simplest terms and that is how I see Bulls rugby:

“Geen fancy moves nie. Die forwards, hulle maak die pap dik aan en die backline laat die bol tot by die wing kom.”

Can’t be performance related because,S.P and Hoffman serial underachievers are there again.
Finally just like our defensive frailties, after 9 weeks Gold finally realises Stevens ain’t cutting it.

  • And surprise Conrad Hoffman still gets a spot while Ungerer and Cameron don’t get a mention. Also why no Wilson but we keep Murray on center and Sithole is left out on wing? I would have though we could have had it all our way by Wilson or JP on wing? Also why the HELL would you NOT include Cooper the most experienced hooker bar Bismarck? Seems like Gold learns Very Very slowly….

  • Waylon please don’t mess up my hairdo Murray. Seriously did you guys see the “handoff” that led to a try last week? The lions player barely touched him and he flinched like he was being stabbed in the face. Murray sucks at defense! I don’t care how many people harp on Sbura’s defense which may not be 100% but he still 100% better than Murray at it so why not make him center? Seriously the youth, the guts, the speed what MORE must he do better than Murray!?

  • My gameplan against the Bulls would be the following: hoist up and unders as often as possible and have Willem Alberts chase them all down. I suspect the game would be forfeited to the Sharks after 20 minutes due to the Bulls running out of reserves.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 8) : And why not? Why not play him (JP) at 14 and put S’bura where he belongs at 13?? Could anyone ask our “technical director” or his flop of a sidekick mr Horak? Or will he offer yet another apology when Waylon fails us at defense like he did last week? I can see it now…. sorry but we STILL did not assign as much importance or preparation to defense by selecting the stronger candidate even when going up against the springbok center incumbent and the fastest rising nr 15 in the country. Oh and the best performing side in the SA conference. Yes we forgot about the importance of defense again, whoops….sorry sharks fans…sorry…I’m getting tired of the apologies.

When Kyle is back to form he is an excellent carrier. Waylon, Mat and co should teach him how to completely under perform at his position …then maybe he will get re-selected?

  • @The hound (Comment 29) : This year, Cooper has been an absolute failure.

Easier to take a chance with a 1-D SP, than have you lose most of your 1st phase ball because of one player.

I think the coaches were forced to drop Cooper, as he would single handedly cost us many a game.

Franco is doing his job, no reason to take another risk with Cooper.

  • @The hound (Comment 29) : Cooper whom I have always rated over Burden as Bismarck’s deputy has been generally poor in the set pieces this year, and to be honest have also not really achieved much as a ball carrier either. But then who apart from PSDT really did this year.

I think Franco deserves a chance to see what he has got, but I am surprised not to see Kyle on the bench. Anyway I hope he puts in the time to work on his lineouts, and I am sure he will be back in contention.

  • @The hound (Comment 36) : Jokes aside though, What value does or did Horak add? If the defense expert has not even though of doing his job and someone (tech director) says we must admit we did not focus on defense, surely you get fired for non-performance/incompetence? Or are we just stocking up on coaching staff so everyone can take turns at apologizing to fans after repeat screw ups? Sharks need to trim down to 1 coach (not director of rugby but head COACH, 1 forward coach and 1 backline coach) get rid of all these consultants and supposed “experts” ask Jimmy Stonehouse how many coaches and assistants he needed to kick our asses last year?

This is job creation for buddies, pure and simple. Employ a real CEO who understands business and have him streamline this management/coaching teams. I almost wish the sharks lose some sponsorship and merchandising ground so the wastefull spending can end and they focus funds on the team for a change.

Wiehahn Herbst – Beacuse Jannie will be out soon so he has a chance of becoming the nr 1 choice.
Kockett – I agree but he would not stay benched behind Reinach who is also young so I would start him ahead of Reinach and mentor Cobus
Louis Ludik – but at 28 how long does he have left? Also a mentor for Lionel and Jaco at 15.
Al Hargreaves – yes but would we not be hurting our young up and coming locks?

We can spend the money elsewhere and maybe get rid of Hoffman in the process 3 scrumhalfs is enough we still have some nice talent coming up the Vodacom and Varsity leagues too.

Actually they would solve almost all of our issues at 15, 3 not 8 as think Bothma is a star in the making but Warren could certainly have been capt and would have given us the option of moving Bothma/Whiteley to 7 now and then and giving Alberts a rest now and then. Now that my thinking is in rebuilding mode, I am more than happy to see what John’s plans will end up doing for the Sharks…the assistant coaches on the other hand, I’d prefer an upgrade to more technically astute assistants…unless we can nail Venter down more permanently (which seems to be impossible to do)

  • I think oyr assistant coaches have copped alot of abuse but to be fair they did win a currie cup and reached a semiFinal.

Horak put in place systems that allowed the shimlas to win the varsity cup

Yes i agree that they might be inexperienced but the current setup allows an inexperienced coach to grow and excel.

at the end of the day, a coach can only work with one player at a time. For me it is more about having an organised and coordinated coaching group and we need time for that to develop
