Wentzel to captain against Highlanders

Gary Gold has confirmed that, while Bismarck du Plessis will return to action against the Highlanders as part of the Sharks starting team, Marco Wentzel will retain the captaincy.

“The situation is this:”, says Gold. “Bismarck has shown incredible humility about his personal situation over the past month and he feels that he just wants to get back into the Sharks team and make as big an impact as he can. It’s unbelievably noble of him to have this attitude. Marco Wentzel has done a good job and he will retain the captaincy.

“We have been really impressed by Bismarck’s attitude,” Gold continues. “He’s come into the team, he wants to prove his worth and play well for the Sharks again. This has been driven by him and he wants to play well and we’ll back his selection to give him that opportunity. As far as I’m concerned, what’s happened has happened, he’s paid the price and we must move on now.”

Thanks to the Sharks PR department for the quotes.

  • Never thought they’d do this, but this is the best possible scenario for the Sharks.

Of course, the on-field support of Bismarck toward Marco will prove how happy he is with the new captaincy arrangement…

But we might just see Bismarck back at his best again – which will have all kiwi’s quaking in their boots. 😈

  • Very happy with this. Time to possibly partner Lewies with Wentzel then as Rob suggested.

  • I think this is a very, VERY good move. We all (not only Shark supporters, the whole of SA actually) just want to see Bismarck back to his brutal best. Undiluted, 100% RAW, unleashed. Giving him the captain’s armband I feel has taken away from the brute that we all know he can be. Plus, Wenzel has done really well in any case handling the captain’s affairs.

  • This is the first bit of news emanating from the Sharks camp in a loooong time that I’m genuinely impressed with. That captaincy mantle just never looked like it was resting easy on Bismarck. Now hopefully he can get back to being the premier hooker on the planet.

  • truly hope that he is at his battleship best and avoids the niggle – he surely will be heavily targeted. We need a storming game! The front row has to get their act back and instil fear again – that mantle seems to be sitting safely in CPT now.

Beast + Bissie + Wentzel + Lewies + Renaldo + Marcel probably puts our pack as one of most mobile in S15. Willem + Jannie no carthorses either.

We have not had a solid axis for any game so hopefully Bissie, Renaldo, Fred and ????? @ 15 deliver. It would also be great to have some level of consistency there.

I hope the guys have pulled lager and sorted any team discontent – so badly need a TEAM performance

  • Well done Bismarck. That is a very mature move which required big balls. Thanks for putting the team first. You again have my support and backing back. Now go get your Bok jersey back.

  • Now it’s JPP, Murray and Steyn’s turn to do something that shows they put the Sharks first. JPP and Murray must tell the coach that they refuse to be picked at 13 ahead of Sithole. Frans must just show that he is actually the best 12 in SA and not the fifth best as he currently is at the moment.

  • Again, its not the forwards that are the issue with the sharks.

Our completely toothless backline will never be world beaters.

Odwa (solid perhaps but jeez the oke cant even run away from a 4 lock. Unforgivable for a wing.)
Waylon (dear lord will someone teach him to pass and/or run straight.)
SP (few ok games interspersed with some solid turds)
The sooner JP, Pat, Jordaan, Frans etc return, the better.

  • @John Galt (Comment 10) : Just a theory im starting to really believe…are SA backlines and specifically the sharks not creating anything because in SA and in the Sharks case Reinach in particular likes to run from the base instead of clearing the ball quickly and effectively to his flyhalf?? Therefore by the time the flyhalf or centre gets the ball the defenses are in their face and they can only crash it up.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 11) : It is something I have been saying for years. Since Fourie Du Preez came onto the scene, every one wanted a Fourie clone. All the plays centered around him, and who can blame it when he had pendantic flyhalfs like Hougaard and Steyn next to him? Then came the next generation of SA flyhalves like Lambie, Jantjies, Pollard etc who thrives in making the decisions and calls on the field, yet coaches are still trying to make our scrummies into Fourie clones. Look at the Sharks, our backline was the most dangerous with Charl and Lambie at 9 and 10. Charl allowed Lambie to make the plays and the calls.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 12) : I agree fully. It will come back and bite us in Northern Hemisphere as defenses will catch us behind the advantage line and then we stuffed. It wont be conceding tries through miss tackles but rather penalties conceded that decide this WC

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 12) :

Have alos been banging on about this for ages.

And not just Fourie – also Joost before him.

Those two or three steps that the scrummie takes is two or three steps the opposition defence can take forward.

  • Comment 17, posted at 28.04.15 15:36:35 by VinChainSaw Reply
  • @KingRiaan (Comment 12) : it’s all about whether you play off 9 or play off 10. Need to have a scrumhalf and flyhalf that compliment each other in that regard.

Look at the Bulls. Flipping atrocious in their first few games because van Zyl was trying to dictate the game. Bring in Paige – a non nonsense distributor whose only real strength is being able to get the ball to Pollard quickly and cleanly – and their whole season changes.

Sharks with Lambie also need to play off 10, but since McLeod left we don’t have a scrummie who can do the necessary job. I had hopes for Wright. Now that we don’t have Pat, we should probably let Cobus play his natural game and dictate play himself. His boot is a worry though.

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : That is what I am saying. If the Bulls put Van Zyl and Potgieter together, then they will make a good combo, but not Van Zyl and Pollard. Pollard and Lambie are the same, they need quick ball and the freedom to make the plays. I might be wrong, but a lot of the NZ teams plau off 10 and 12 with the scrummies mainly there to deliver quick ball.

  • Fourie is the best and worst thing ever to happen to SA rugby. Every SA coach except those at the Lions and recently Stormers, thank to Gert Smal, wanted Fourie clones. Lambie has played with both Charl and Cobus and surely he is in the best position to know wish type of scumhalf is good for him and the team. As one of the leaders at the Sharks….why is he allowing this slow shit service from Cobus to continue. Speaks volumes about his leadership.

  • To be fair to FdP – he does have a crisp pass from the base. So even if he dictates the game a lot, he does service rucks a lot faster than most of our other “scrummies”.

I still reckon Wright will be the future of the Sharks. He can actually pass without needing 3 steps sideways. He is still young, and need to get consistency in his game.

  • @benji (Comment 26) : Your contention that Cobus Reinach is the worst scrummie in SR is frankly preposterous, and easily refuted using two words – Conrad Hoffman. I’d certainly agree that Reinach can be extremely frustrating in his inability to consistently execute the basics of his position, but still, compare that to Mr. Hoffman.

For instance, can you see him consistently putting his flyhalf on the front foot with crisp, accurate passing from the base of a scrum or ruck? No. What about accelerating through a half-gap around the fringes, leaving would-be tacklers grasping at air? Nope. Putting a marauding loosie coming around the corner flat on his ass? Negative. Turning opposing defences with intelligent, pin-point accurate kicking? Not. Continuously running support lines, ready to receive an off-load or pass? I guess not.

In fact, the only thing he seems to excel at is keeping younger scrumhalves with potential out of the match day squad. I put it down to him being in possession of photos of our coaching staff in compromising positions with a bunch of cheap Mexican hookers from Guadelajara while on a team-building trip to the Yucatan. It’s only a theory, but it’s the only one that makes sense.

Cobus has a looooong way to go to oust Continental Drift as the worst scrummie in SR.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 33) : @Bokhoring (Comment 34) : Nope, sorry Bokhoring but the entire theory falls apart if it took place in Bangkok. Flights depart to the north from South Africa and then turn either left to fly West or turn right to fly East. Hoffman is not capable of turning right thus he could have never taken a flight to Thailand to gather the damning evidence.
