As good as it’s going to get

I’m afraid it’s time for a healthy dose of pragmatism, Sharks fans: we need to accept the team for what it is and get behind the boys that are on tour.

The reality is that the touring squad is what it is; we all know that there are certain players in the mix about whom we continue to have doubts, but we need to be realistic. The squad has been selected, is already in New Zealand and isn’t going to change. We therefore really shouldn’t act with shock or outrage when said players are picked for a match 23; after all, with only 27 players in total (of whom two are not available for selection this week) it’s frankly unavoidable!

We’ve all had a chance to have our say over the last fortnight and have dished out the criticism where warranted. Some of the points raised seem to have hit home – after all, Stefan Ungerer is on the tour, Bismarck is no longer the captain – while others have not. We’re not going to be able to change those thing (not now, anyway) and I think perhaps it’s time to put the negativity aside and throw our weight behind the team that we have.

The Sharks team are committed to being positive and doing the best job they can – controlling the things within their control and not dwelling on the negative things that they can’t change. Can we, as fans, do the same? At least for the next month?

Let’s give it a bash.

  • Spot on Rob!

  • yip, we all love to play the fantasy stuff but as said the parameters of the squad is a given and choices have to come from it.

the optimist in me keeps putting in a little whisper that we all might be pleasantly surprised… Sharks always plays best when written off and back to the wall. Last two losses might come to haunt us later but now, it could be galvanising effect along with hopefully serious introspection and hard work in last two weeks

  • Well, we’ve seen what the Lions have been able to achieve with a group of no-names.

Surely all the trials and pressures would have drawn the boys closer together, and the tour is probably the best thing for this group.

As a typically naive Sharks supporter, I’m hoping for a 4 wins from 4 tour result 😀

  • Im not expecting miracles…what i am hoping for is seeing more cohesion and application of the same gameplan throughout. I want to see less silly penalties given away and much better discipline. Lastly i want to see some hunger on defense…show us some pride FFS

  • @SheldonK (Comment 14) : Yup, the word cohesion pretty much sums it up for me. Take responsibility as a team and play for each other. That’s the type of environment in which Fred has been at his best in the past.

  • Comment 22, posted at 29.04.15 14:44:44 by robdylan Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 17) : @Rvw (Comment 18) : It’s a great play but it was allowed because the entire opposing team’s defensive line shifted far too eagerly towards the direction the ball was initially being played opening up that huge gap for the fullback to run at. Good on the fullback for spotting the lapse and immediately changing direction but would he look as impressive against a better defense?

As for the birth location, while being born in Pretoria *will* imbue you with looks that.. er… only a mother could love, being born away is no guarantee of the reverse, I’m afraid

  • @Culling Song (Comment 48) : Which leaves you with really only one option, you’re going to have to ask your wife’s permission for some good looks. As I understand it though, she’s already made allowances for the existence of some sort of Devil’s brew in her home so this probably a bridge too far. The fact that you require said brew in order to support the Sharks is probably of little consequence to her.

In other words, the Sharks robbed you of your chance to own a set of good looks.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 55) : I recommend They stock both the Devil’s Peak Brewery King’s Blockhouse IPA and the Brew Dog Punk IPA, and once you’ve tried those you’ll never be able to drink any of that SAB swill again. They do overnight delivery to major centres, and even to The Land That God Forsake (a.k.a. Bronkhorstspruit), delivery times are typically 2 – 3 days.
Their prices are very good too; “good” admittedly being a relative concept. I’ve pointed out to my minister of finance that a) the Kings’ Blockhouse IPA comes in 440ml bottles, as opposed to the standard 340ml, so on a R/unit price it’s not as bad as first impressions may lead her to believe, and b) I’ll rather drink two proper beers than a six pack of the standard fare, thus there is no impact on the fiscus. And also, I have a second job pumping gas at the local fuel station to fund the four extra beers…

  • @Culling Song (Comment 56) : Shot, bottleshop’s prices are more reasonable compared to And don’t worry, I haven’t defiled my lips by anything ‘brewed’ at SAB in many a year. We’ve have a few craft breweries in the surrounding regions and they’re great but Devil’s Peak is really special.

I’ve considered buying a kit and trying home brewing but I’m deathly afraid that I might actually enjoy what I produce.

Bottleshop is just waaay more convenient for me. Super whisky selection too, and an iPhone app. I’m starting think their focused target market group is basically me…
