Changes for Sharks as Hurricanes loom

The Sharks have been bolstered by the return of three international players for this week’s game against the Hurricanes, but have unfortunately lost two others in the process. In addition, Gary Gold has made several changes to the run-on side in light of the 33-point defeat suffered in Dunedin last Friday.

Jannie du Plessis returns for Lourens Adriaanse, to complete the all-Bok front row on which the Sharks have come to depend, while Renaldo Bothma has recovered too and will start in the number 8 jersey. Willem Alberts, who picked up an ankle injury against the Highlanders, drops out, meaning another run at blindside flank for Etienne Oosthuizen.

Wholesale changes in the backline see only JP Pietersen retain his place from last week; Stefan Ungerer and Lionel Cronje are the new halfbacks, with Frans Steyn joining Pietersen in midfield. S’bura Sithole moves from right wing to left, Odwa Ndungane is back in his most familiar number 14 jersey, while the Jake White experiment of Lwazi Mvovo at fullback seems set for another attempt too.

The bench is interesting indeed – featuring Kyle Cooper as loose forward replacement. There is no sign of Matt Stevens, Giant Mtayanda or Fred Zeilinga this week.

Sharks: 15. Lwazi Mvovo, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. JP Pietersen, 12. Francois Steyn, 11. S’bura Sithole, 10. Lionel Cronje, 9. Stefan Ungerer, 8. Renaldo Bothma, 7. Etienne Oosthuizen, 6. Marcell Coetzee, 5. Marco Wentzel (Captain), 4. Stephan Lewies, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. Bismarck du Plessis, 1. Tendai Mtawarira
16. Franco Marais, 17. Dale Chadwick, 18. Lourens Adriaanse, 19. Mouritz Botha, 20. Kyle Cooper, 21. Conrad Hoffmann, 22. Andre Esterhuizen, 23. Waylon Murray

  • Well, we asked for change – we’re getting it in bucket loads.

Seems Hoffman is indeed the professional Sharks second fiddle, happy to play behind anybody.

Ungerer being thrown in the deep end, but he’s class and should come through without too much hassle.

  • I have to say, with the players we have over there I am actually happy with this team. He has done his best to address the problem areas.

Will we win? No. But this is a step forward interms of selections.

  • What absolutely befuddles me is that, if Alberts is injured and management knew this, how on God’s green earth we can fly Cooper out as cover for him, when we have perfectly good young flankers who could do the job!! Come on…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 6) : To be honest, Cooper’s play in the loose is probably his best asset, with his lineout and hooking work leaving lots to be desired.

I actually think he can work as a loosie – as long as his heart is in it..

  • Alberts is a huge loss.

I am honestly surprised to see Ungerer and Cronje at 9 and 10 – was expecting Hoffmann and Frans. Hopefully there will be some thinking behind the kicking this week.

Guys, we have been through worse, e.g the Putt days, and we will have much worse days ahead, but the Sharks will stand up again, just like they always have done. Plus, what other team can play as good as the Sharks when their backs are against the wall?

  • Well we’ve got most of the changes we’ve been asking for. Blindside flank is a problem, and Cooper on the bench might just work. They are trying something new, so I’m backing them! Just hoping Cooper can cover the defence as a flank, he’ll do fine going forward. Here’s to hoping the backline plays a lot flatter and more attacking that we’ve seen thus far. I backed the boys by 15 as per usual, and we might pull it off!

  • Based on the players there i think this is the best team they could have picked. Im hoping our forwards can front up and get the backs some ball. Ungerer should give Cronje early ball, he will take it to the line and hopefully get Steyn and JPP running. Mvovo will hopefully run it from the back. If we see Cronje sit in the pocket and kick then we know for sure its coaches orders. The Canes 9 will give Ungerer a good test.

    4. No yellows.
    5. No reds.

  • If I can follow up the Frozen reference with a Wizard of Oz one:
Our back row has no brain and our centres have no heart (but at least we got rid of the scrumhalf with no courage).

I’m particularly concerned about the back row. Don’t get me wrong, I criticised the Sharks last week for having no hustle and Coetzee and Bothma are ALL hustle all day long; but between all three of those guys need a bit of direction to be useful.

I’m very glad that Cronje and Ungerer finally get a chance though. Both of these are top class players that have huge potential – these are the players we need to come through if the Sharks are to have a recovery in 2016.

I lot of people have said that change needs to start at the top with the CEO, but should we not look further back at which board members appointed the CEO, and even further back in terms of what shareholders chose the new board. In my mind this is when things started going awry and we need to hold these shareholders accountable, whoever they may be.

Sheet if this guy was paid according to his time on the field,he’d need a part time debt collecting job to make up the rent.
For me this is indicative of all the crap this season.
He is a world class or put in another way in a class of his own. When you have a player like him in your team, second best is just a world away.
This has happened to us the whole season,we keep on losing our Marque players and replacing them with fourth team players.Wentzel for P.S.D.T,Cooper for Bismark,Murray for Frans Steyn,Stevens for Jannie,Hoffman for Reinarch, and now Oosthuizen for Alberts.
You can’t play like that.Shit I remember the days when we had Andre Joubert on the bench for Reece.

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 76) : Ok so you would go into the game with a fullback (Mvovo), a centre (Sithole), 2 loosies (Bothma and Coetzee) and a lock (Lewies)…so thats 5 guys….how do you intend to fill the other 17 positions? Cos I hate to tell you just those 5 guys will probably leak quite a few points?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 77) : well if you noticed, those were the only players I rated. That really doesnt suggest selecting 5 players in a team.

But with regard to team selections – I would never have recruited as poorly as they have this season, Bothma and Giant being the exceptions (is he injured?).

Of the players available I would try and scrape this team together, and dear god they would have a vastly different approach to rugby.

    15. Wilson
    14. JPP
    13. Sithole
    12. Williams
    11. Mvovo
    10. Zeilinga showed ability under previous coaching
    9. Ungerer
    8. du Preez (unless he is at the junior boks)
    7. Bothma
    6. Marcell
    5. Lewies
    4. Giant
    3. Louwrens
    2. Bismarck (Cooper if his throwing improved)
    1. Beast

And thats not saying this is a brilliant team either
