Du Toit’s loyalty to sway decision?

According to an interview with the Mercury’s Mike Greenaway, Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit appears to be set on another stint with the Durban union, despite compelling attempts to lure him to Cape Town for next season.

Several factors would weigh in the favour of a move to Western Province, not least of which being closer to family, while the prospect of playing provincial rugby with fellow Bok Eben Etzebeth would surely also be attractive. With the Sharks in somewhat of a transition period, retention of a key talent like du Toit must surely be critical to them; convincing the player, though, to stick around during the turbulent times, when the prospect of a trophy might be greater somewhere else in the short term, is not always an easy thing.

The players own principles, though, look set to come into the equation. Du Toit told Greenaway, “I have a debt to pay to a franchise that welcomed me with open arms when I was a nobody out of school, and then have stuck by me for two years when I was mostly injured.

“I need to honour that debt and I want to,” he adds. I like to think that the way Sharks fans opened their hearts to Pieter-Steph with messages of support and love after his recent injury must surely have played some part in this and I’m incredibly proud that we at Sharksworld have played a role in communicating that support.

All-in-all, the signs are pointing to good news for John Smit and the Sharks in this matter, since it would now be very hard for du Toit to go back on what he’s said and sign with Province anyway. We expect confirmation of a new contract from the Sharks soon.

  • I’ll be rooting for the boys. All I really ask is to see some heart and I think it had been creeping back in to our game.

Happy B – day to Frans Steyn. 28 – it’s been about 20 years since he first came onto the scene.

  • It would be great news if he stayed. He makes a huge difference to the pack when he is playing.

However he seems to be the Paul Jordaan of forwards – I don’t recall him ever been able to play the bulk of a season.

  • If he does sign ,they should make him the captain and rebuild the team around him.
If he doesn’t sign I hope all the guys that have complimented him don’t turn on him.
If this guy can stay injury free he has the potential to be a John Eales,Martin Johnson captain.

  • John needs to understand that a player will look at the entire package before deciding which union to sign with. We need to make ourselves more attractive. We unfortunately can’t do that with the likes of Paul, Horak, BMH and Sean. Would you as a player want to be coached by BMH when you can for example chose someone like Proudfoot or would you chose Sean when you can have “Swius” from the Lions? These friends of John are killing us. Let them go go for the sake of the Sharks. Allow Gary to build his own team. Hope he is friend with Stonehouse. We need a good forwards coach.

Alberts and Deysel are injured so often because of the the way the Sharks use their blindsides. Eventually these guys will have to move on if only to try and lengthen their careers at another union.

  • @The hound (Comment 49) : I’m not suggesting that he should model his play after Spies but surely he realises the toll this sort of strategy takes on the length of his career and playing up north becomes a logical decision of sorts.

Richie McCaw is managed a little better due to central contracting and he’s currently 34. Alberts is 31. I wonder if Alberts would still be playing at 34 if stays with the Sharks?

I know I’m pointing a finger at the Sharks here but you’re right in mentioning other unions too. It is a problem in general and probably more so at SA unions.

As much as I have championed Marcel for years,he has become so predictable,a one dimensional crash baller, who always dies with the ball.
Whitely is much more subtle,he always manages to pass the ball on to someone in a better position.
He reminds more everyday of Gary Teich.

  • Do you think anyone actually sticks to the date of 1 July before opening negotiations? Or do negotiations start informally before then? It just seems to me as if a lot is actually done beforehand already…despite denials like this:

Even more biff-bash-boring local derbies and a couple of easy beat Japanese and Argentinian teams (while the Kiwis and Ozzies play proper level rugby with no added dilution). Promises to be really riveting. How did we screw ourselves over into voluntarily wanting a 6th team and this horrid “Africa conference”?

  • @Feather (Comment 166) : easy … SARU thought that by kicking out the Lions , we would crawl into a hole and die .. 2 points and 2 year later and they now have a problem

  • @Feather (Comment 166) : Not necessarily. The Argie coach is trying to organize that the their team is filled with as many Pumas as he can convince to play locally.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 165) :This is Sppedway – Four riders keep turning left over four laps of an oval track and each race is over in less than a minute. Easy! but not for the riders. They race 500cc single-geared machines with no brakes. The engines are single cylinder, fixed gear power units, fitted into the chassis of the bike frame horizontally and fuelled by methanol. The engine makes up the major weight of the bike as there are few other parts to the machine. They are not allowed to weigh less than 80 kilogrammes. These guys go hell bent for leather for the full race. They race a few times per night accumulating against different opposition.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 186) : That sounds about perfect for lulling me into a Sunday afternoon nap. The fact that you’re essentially busy with one continous left turn is a thoughtful touch 😉

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 187) : As mind-boggling as it may seem, there are actually people out there who have voluntarily watched golf, F1 or equestrian events. Then again, there are people out there who have voluntarily pierced their genitals, purchased Steve Hofmeyr albums, or eaten “afval” for reasons other than a dare. Go figure.

  • @MysticShark (Comment 191) : You are good…but surely you must wonder off every now and then for half an hour or so and come back in the hope that the car in 12th has managed to, just maybe, have overtaken the 11th placed car.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 194) : I must have an attention deficit disorder, hence my like of speedway..a 1 minute race, with lots of speed and positions changing all the time is about it for me. But then again many rugby games are too short for my liking.
