Injury clouds for Sharks

Things don’t get any easier for the Sharks, who have returned home from tour carrying a length injury list after their tour victory over the Reds last Friday.

Facing the Melbourne Rebels in Durban on Friday night – a team they have never lost to, yet find themselves behind on the log this season – Gary Gold will need to keep his fingers firmly crossed that at least some of his injured players come through in time to be selected.

One guy who definitely won’t take the field is poor Stephan Lewies. We’re awaiting an official prognosis, but the talk is that the ugly knee injury sustained in Brisbane last week is sure to sideline him for the rest of the Super Rugby season, if not the bulk of the Currie Cup campaign to follow. Frans Steyn, who suffered an arm injury last week, is also in doubt for the game and awaiting scan results. Tera Mtembu also looks doubtful, having sustained yet another knee injury in a club game last weekend.

Reports differ as to whether Cobus Reinach or Ryan Kankowski will return this week; I’ve read stories going both ways on either player, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Paul Jordaan would appear to be fit for selection, though, while Jean Deysel could also make a return, if fit. His suspension has finally run its course.

The Sharks will announce their side at 10am tomorrow.

  • Now that we are back home there is no excuse not to use young players.

  • Not getting any easier does it lol – doesn’t rain it pours at the Sharks
@Seth101 (Comment 1) : Agreed Seth – use the youngsters.

  • Would be great to see Jordaan back in a sharks jersey! They shouldn’t risk Steyn if he’s not 100%. Hoping they give some young guys a run as well.

  • Play the youngsters against the Rebels and field the best possible team for the final match. That way we can keep the tradition of true South-African fashion by taking out a fellow SA team in a better position. 😆

  • Ungerer apparently trained with the team. Lewies is out, while Alberts and Steyn did not train on Monday and are still being assessed. I also read reports that Kanko is training with the team, but have not heard about Deysel and no one is saying anything about Lambie who should only have been out for 6 weeks, since the Crusaders 7 weeks ago – the end of this week will be 8.

    The injured:

    Reinach – Fracture Hand
    PSDT – Knee
    Lewies – Knee
    Lambie – Kneck
    Mtembu – Knee
    Steyn – Shoulder
    Alberts – Concussed

    Ungerer – ?
    Kanko – ?
    Odwa – ?
    Deysel – ?

  • @Letgo (Comment 10) :

This is the latest news I’ve read:

Steyn and Lewies out for rest of Super Rugby. Lewies will be out for months with his knee. They are still awaiting Steyn’s results of the scan of his pectoral, but it looks like he could also be out for a while.

Dale Chadwick, Rolando Bothma and Willem Alberts are all “nursing injuries” from the last game and haven’t trained but may be available.

Mtembu, Reinach, PSDT are all definately out.

Ungerer, Kanko and Odwa seems to be okay for selection. I think Deysel is also fine, because no one is reporting anything about him.

    Jordaan is training.

It seems Lmabie is still not available.

  • @Farlington (Comment 5) : This could be a very interesting team selection for this week. Either that or these injury stories are over hyped

  • @SheldonK (Comment 12) : Well we have nothing to lose really. We just have to finish these last few games (hopefully) injury free. Take a hard look at how we performed and start to focus on the CC. I’m not saying sit back and not perform the last few games as no team goes out to lose a match, but now we have more freedom.

  • @Farlington (Comment 13) : Since that first loss against the Cheetahs at Kings Park we havnt been in this comp at all. Injuries have crippled any idea of a comeback. A defeat to a pretty decent Rebels side would be an embarrassment…and then the week after the Stormers roll into town. I dont see much we can take from these games other than trying to save face

  • Comment 14, posted at 26.05.15 16:19:42 by SheldonK Reply

  • We cannot take the Rebels lightly.

Having said that, the Rebels have never won in SA and have never beaten the Sharks home or away.

Losing to them at home would be epically humiliating.

For this reason I’m not for sommer just “throwing in the youngsters” (feeding them to the wolves).

  • @Feather (Comment 15) : As I said, I don’t think that the team should go out with a no care type attitude. However I also don’t see why we should risk it all in the remaining games. A victory over the Rebels and perhaps even one over the Stormers will not make the season a success. To be honest I really don’t care about the last two results as we should use the games as an “experimental” platform.

  • You know what would keep SR much more entertaining and lively right up to the final game…when log points are rewarded (and deducted) according to the log position of the team you beat.

Say team number 15 beat team number 1, then they get 8 log points for argument sake. And if team number 1 beats team number 15, they get 2 log points.

Add even more spice to the log, if team number 1 loses, he cedes his 8 log points to team number 15.

Sure would give far more incentive to teams to constantly perform at their peak.

  • @Rvw (Comment 31) :

That’s too bad, I really believed Zeilinga would become a solid option at Flyhalf for us.

So in the last few years we’ve lost…

    Jean-Luc Du Plessis
    Robert Du Preeze
    Tim Swiel and now
    Fred Zeilinga

    and gained

    Lionel Cronje and
    Joe Pietersen
oh and Garth April recenlty, but I don’t even know him.

At least we have Innocent Radebe who is showing promising signs.

We’ve had Heimar Williams covering flyhalf during VC. Why are we throwing away talent?

Who wants to play the, “how-many-good-young-players-have-the-Sharks-lost-in-the-last-3-years-game?”

I’m dreading to see these players make good on their potential at other unions.

  • @Letgo (Comment 37) : Just to compare Sharks/Stormers with using youth.

The Sharks have 10 players under 23 in their SR Squad, compared to the 16 of the Stormers.

Lewies (would be regular if not injured)
    Ooosthuizen (regularly used)
    PSDT (injuries preventing)
    Ungerer (more oppertunities lately)
    Andre (some oppertunities)
    Thomas (regular)

    Heimar (hardly ever used)
    Majola (never used)
    Franco Marais (hardly ever used)
    Zeilinga (already leaving)
    Wright (already left)

    Siya Kolisi(51 Caps)
    Steven Kitshoff(51 Caps)
    Damian de Allende(36 Caps)
    Eben Etzebeth(23 Caps)
    Cheslin Kolbe(17 Caps)
    Ruan Botha(16 Caps)
    Oli Kebble(15 Caps)
    Kobus van Wyk(14 Caps)
    Jean Kleyn(8 Caps)
    Jurie van Vuuren(8 Caps)
    Huw Jones(7 Caps)
    Dillyn Leyds(7 Caps)
    Johnny Kotze(5 Caps)
    Skuna Notshe(3 Caps)
    Devon Williams(3 Caps)
    Neil Rautenbach(2 Caps)
    Patrick Howard(1 Cap)

The Stormers have 8 players under 23 years with more than 10 caps (all 8 regular SR starters) and 4 more well on their way to 10 by the end of this season.

We’ve got 3 locks that we would like to play regularly and Thomas, a 12 and 9 that only gets game time when injuries strike and 5 other players who hardly ever sees any game time. So basically if not for injuries and Baby boks, we would start 3 guys regularly.

  • @Letgo (Comment 42) : Remind me how many Super Rugby titles the Stormers have won? Should we really be comparing ourselves to them just because they at the top of SA log now. Id rather compare to winning teams such as the Tahs or Chiefs in recent years

  • Comment 43, posted at 27.05.15 12:04:33 by SheldonK Reply

  • @Letgo (Comment 42) : To be fair, the Stormers invest more in the junior ranks than we do. I’m quite happy with our recruitment policy in the junior ranks (i.e. Not contracting hordes there). So if we always have a ratio of roughly 10 youngsters to every 15 that the Stormers have in the Super rugby squad I think that is about right and absolutely ok. I think the reasons for things going wrongs this season weren’t about us not playing enough youngsters…
