Italian sojourn for Meyer

Zebre Rugby in Italy have announced the signature of Sharks loose forward Johan Meyer.

Former Queenian Meyer – known as “Plank” to his friends, joined the Sharks straight after school and played age-group rugby between 2012 and 2014. He established himself as a regular in Vodacom Cup over the last few years and made his Currie Cup debut last year.

At 1.93m and 104kg, Meyer is a rather large unit and set to make a big impact in the European Challenge Cup, where the Italaian Zebras have been drawn in the same pool as reigning champs Gloucester. Zebre play in a stylised kit that reflect the pelt of the animal for which they are named – in other words, Meyer at least will continue to play in a black and white strip next season.

Former Bulls utility back Ulrich Beyers also joins Zebre, moving from French Top 14 side Union Bordeaux Begles.

  • Pity, was keen to see him get game time in the CC.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 1) : sudden logjam again at 7. Need to get those du Preez brothers into the mix, plus we still have Deyse and van der Walt.

Not to mention Bothma coming back (and JackPot coming in) for Super Rugby next year. And Tera hopefully being fit.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Flank seems well stocked, I was think more of 8, from what I know Meyer was just as good at 8 where we only have Tera and Van der Walt.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Rob u reckon Deysel or Van Walt at 8? Have seen Dan DuPreez i think he could be come a good 8. Jean Luc def more of a flank tho.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : Philip van der Walt has always struck me as more of an 8 than a 7.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : def fair comment that. He seems quite a useful linking player not just a basher like Deysel. Looks at the guys we have for CC i really hope the Sharks dont stick to the same formula of forwards trying to bash through in 1 off runners and the backs just watching on. We have young dynamic ball players in the forwards now. Well except the locks but still

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : Dan du Preez played his whole school career at lock,we should keep him there

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : Deysel is way too slow for 8.

  • @The hound (Comment 10) : @Ben (Comment 11) : Yeh i kno he did but just judging by him in comparison to others he looks a bit short for a look but seems like he has good hands etc to play 8. Deysel has played 8 for Sharks in CC before hence my comment. So Majola,Deysel, VD Walt loose trio…unless they play Oosthuizen instead of Majola

  • Comment 12, posted at 19.06.15 11:26:45 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 12) : I just vomited in my mouth!!! Please no, keep Oosthuizen at 4. PSDT and Lewies are stuggling with injuries so we need a solid 4. Oosthuizen’s poaching skills also required now with Bissy no longer there. He is mobile for a lock but too slow for 7

  • @Kabouter (Comment 13) : hey look appoint me as coach and he will play 4 but just going on last year etc i wouldnt be surprised to see him at 7 first game. Chadwick,Marais,Adriaanse,Wentzel,Oosthuizen,Mjola,Deysel, VD Walt,Ungerer,Cronje,Sp Marais,Williams,Jordaan, sithole,Mvovo would be my starting side…and yes Sp Marais on the wing- he is actually pretty decent there. If Joe Pieterson here from the start he can play 15 and shift Mvovo to wing and SP to bench

  • @The hound (Comment 10) : at only 1.93 or so, Dan isn’t going to make it as a senior lock.

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : yeh i figured as much. Seen him and his brother at gym and they are bout my height. Interesting that a guy like Brendon Groenewald got a look in at the Cheetahs CC side last year but never had a look at the Sharks. Think he is captaining Collegians now. Also wonder if and how much we will see of Garth April? Or was that more a Rovers signing than a Sharks signing?

  • I’ve actually been to watch a game at zebre’s home ground. Suffice to say the ground is tiny and the fan base even smaller. Parma’s a lovely town though.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 14) : When are we going to get some value out of Wilson also Jordaan? When will he be back?

  • Comment 19, posted at 19.06.15 12:57:36 by coolfusion Reply

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 18) : So is Pocock. Will be a shame if both players don’t feature.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 19) : It seriously seems as though Wilson was put in the naughty corner as i dont think he has even been sent to feature in club games, well not that i know of.
Jordaan has played a few club games so think they were easing him back in so we should see more of him come CC. I also think we may see Lambie in a few games as his injury could prevent him from playing much Rugby Championship rugby for the Boks

  • Comment 21, posted at 19.06.15 13:07:06 by SheldonK Reply

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 5) : Indeed, bummed to see him leave, but obviously he feels it’ll be more progressive for his career going forward, so happy in that regard for him. I really hope he does well in Italy though

  • Comment 22, posted at 19.06.15 13:23:54 by Ludz Reply

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : if you had seen those twins as junior school boys you’d never ever have thought they’d be too small for anything.
Dan played Natal schools lock for three years so at 15 he was, bigger and stronger than any o17 year old in Natal.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Given…
    a) The logjam at 7…
    b) The thin 4 stocks…
    c) His performances at 7 this year…
…I hope Oosthuizen only wears the no. 4 from now on!

  • a lot of moving parts at the sharks right now in management and squad

however in a world cup year that tends to be the case (from a squad perspective anyway)

its and important time though. We gotta get some winning momentum back, bring through some promising youngsters like Majola, fisher, hadebe, the twins, etc. And integrate a seasoned vet like petersen so that we can make a better showing in nxt years SR

Not to mention get some confidence in guys like luorens adriaanse, kyle cooper and dale chadwick.

Some clever recruitment would hurt, botha hasnt been too bad, not great either. The less said about stevens the better. Wilson hardly played

hopefully if frans is back for SR nxt yr his more effective and less full of himself since his buddies jannie and bissy arent around. I miss care free long haired frans, he was somewhat inconsistent but atleast he was in shape

lots to do. Exciting times if you work for the sharks I say

  • So I don’t know quite where to put this:
    Interesting news…my thoughts:
    1. I’m not thrilled to have all our guys play in Japan until so close before the start of Super Rugby. When will they rest? Will they be able to prepare properly with our squad?
    2. I do get, though, that it is part of the rugby landscape now and that w don’t have much choice if we want to keep these guys.
    3. There is one gem in this article though: The sentence that Marcell will be returning to the Sharks after his stint in Japan. Is that official? I hope so! In that case…YAY!!!!
