The Sharks have just announced the signing of Coenie Oosthuizen from the Cheetahs.

In a stunning coup for the Durban franchise, the big Bok prop has committed to a four-year deal. Unlike the recent signing of Willie le Roux, this one comes with no Japanese strings attached either, meaning Oosthuizen will arrive in Durban in November and be available for the entire Super Rugby pre-season.

Gary Gold told the Sharks website: “I am pleased that Coenie has taken up our offer to play his rugby in Durban. He is an exceptional player who boasts surprising pace and is known for his strong runs and work rate around the park. His experience will prove invaluable to our team ambitions going forward.”

“It is a great privilege for me to sign with the Cell C Sharks,” said 21-times-capped Oosthuizen. “This is a new chapter in my career and I am looking forward to this exciting opportunity in Durban.”

Welcome to the Sharks, Coenie. I’d say that’s a pretty handy replacement for the departing Jannie du Plessis.

  • I’m happy with that. It’s the prop signing we’ve been crying out for. And I’ve commented on here that Coenie has shown marked improvement (even at tighthead, where I initially mocked him!) in the last year. Welcome Coenie!

  • John Smit is a useless CEO. doesn’t know what he’s doing. Just loses players, signs journeymen.

    etc etc

That’s TWO members of the Bok 23 and we haven’t even reached 1 July yet 🙂

  • Why only November arrival? Will he still play CC for Cheetahs of not in Bok squad?

  • But most importantly coach. Get that squared away in style and I will write my own open letter to John.

  • Woohoo! Great signing. Was a little worried about prop for a while.

I have however heard that ole Coenie is a sucker for a bar fight in Bloem. So please Durban people, don’t antagonise the big guy. You’re going to come second!

    Too boring
    Too many Cheetahs

As for the news. Great signing! Coenie will look good in black 😎

  • @Dryden (Comment 25) : Coenie at loose Thomas at tight or even rotation. Wouldn’t it be great to have 2 guys who can play either and a legend (beast) at backup. Just get Chadwick trained on tight as well.

I have been waiting for this announcement for like two weeks, so I’m not like super surprised or anything.

  • Despite initial reservations, I have come to see this as a big positive. Coenie is a big name player, and he is a very capable LH. It also makes sense given Thomas du Toit’s apparent ongoing transformation to TH.

While hooker and lock remain concerns, the front row and back row are not looking as bad as you might expect given the Bismark and Jannie losses.

He needs coach that can keep him in his place, someone like Os,can’t see Gold intimidating him.

  • Although Coenie is a quality prop and has shown improvement at tighthead. I still have concerns about a quality tighthead. If Thomas is going to be the future there he needs time and a senior tighthead to learn from.

  • Very good signing by the Sharks – lets hope Coenie’s big injuries is a thing of the past. I like him  . I still think his best position is Lh but he has grown in the Th spot – like most other guys here I wonder if he will be for us Th or Lh? If Th then we have Thomas, Coenie and Lourens and Lh Beast and Dale – so maybe another Lh short?

@grant10 (Comment 54) : Thomas himself want to play at 3.
