There are a few news titbits going around from within the Bok camp and I thought it a good idea to summarise them into one article, so here goes.

Firstly, it was announced yesterday afternoon that coach Heyneke Meyer has called up Flip van der Merwe to cover the second row after the injury to Victor Matfield. Matfield is set to miss this weekend’s action, but there is no further news at this stage regarding the seriousness of his injury.

Speaking of injury, Meyer was also quoted as saying that Marcell Coetzee may miss this weekend’s match. Details on his injury is also limited, with the news only mentioning that his ligaments are intact. We have seen him tweet that it was merely a lammie, but we still cannot be sure if he will start this weekend.

Looking forward to the All Black game, a decision will have to be made on who will lead the team. Meyer said that a decision would be released later on Tuesday, but I can guarantee that it will not be Jean de Villiers.

Jean played 60 minutes for Western Province against the Pumas this weekend, and will again be in the Province midfield this weekend, when they face the Kings. De Villiers has requested to play the full game but WP coach John Dobson has said that his involvement will again be limited to 60 minutes.

UPDATE – Piet-Steph du Toit also joined the Springbok camp yesterday. The second row took a knock last weekend when Victor Matfield lasted only a few minutes on the park, but news of Flip and Piet-Steph joining the team does make matters better. We are not sure exactly how du Toit is doing or how close he is to being involved, but the fact that he is with the squad is an indication that he will be in the reckoning come World Cup squad time.

That’s it for now, once we have that captain announcement, I will update you.

pity Planet not called up. Niether Lood or Flip a 5

PSDT still too far away from playing test rugby. Would he be given club or CC games to rid the rust?

  • @Kabouter (Comment 1) : I was surprised that Flip was not in the original squad but agreed on your comments regarding Wentzel. Experience, leadership and the required lineout prowess all there in one ‘matured’ package, just the way Meyer prefers his no. 5 locks ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

  • PSdT could probably do the job at flank with his workrate and mobility but it would be silly to use him there if he’s available and we’re in need of a number 5 lock. Then again, Teboho is now considered lock cover too so who knows how this is going to go down.

  • @JD (Comment 13) : Nah already forgotten about him. Hope he makes the bok team though can’t see us using oupa mat field to win another cup. Not that he would be able to make any tackles beyond first 20 minutes. If we had flip lood Eben and pieter steph we would be solid at lock.

I’m Sharks over Boks so PSDT will not be forgiven for a while yet. Maybe never, the fickle turncoat.

  • @grant10 (Comment 28) : Guess it was too much to hope for some common sense from HM. Wonder what Pollard must do to actually get dropped. This is the second time Lambie ended the previous year as the no1 choice flyhalf and then for no reason, is suddenly backup again the next year to a clearly inferior no10

  • Colonel Integrity….let’s hope his family doesn’t suddenly get an urge to move to NZ, he might decide that “family” is more important than Bok rugby ๐Ÿ˜›

  • @HeinF (Comment 36) : Right or wrong, HM has decided to back Pollard. So the more game time he gets to settle, the better. HM knows what Lambie brings to the game, and also Morne Steyn.

Hence he can give Pollard time, to get his game together, and confidence. In fairness Pollard has the game to shine at test level. He showed it against the AB’s last year, and he showed it as a Junior bok.

I like Lambie too, he is a very cool, calm and skilled player. One must ask though why he hasn’t nailed down the 10 spot under various bok coaches? He is always used more as an all rounder. Not seen as exciting enough from 15, not big enough for 12, and isn’t nailing down 10.

I understand the provincial bias though, it is what we are ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 38) : me bias…never ๐Ÿ˜‰
Pollard isn’t terrible and has a lot of potential, but he is defnitely not a better 10 than lambie atm. My only question is, would meyer still back pollard if he was 10kg lighter? I’m just so fed-up with this culture we have, whrlere the bigger the player, the better he is. I’m still very sure pollard missed atleast 4 tackles saturday, bit like you said, meyer has decided to stick with him…i’m just nit happy with his choice ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @HeinF (Comment 39) : Lol, I think if we look at where Pollard is in his career, comparatively to Lambie, he is certainly a prospect that can grow. Lambie a great player, and as you say, the size issue is real. And believe me, its not only with the boks. International FH have to defend the channel against 100kg plus flankers, and mostly the centres are as heavy, and a bit faster, so even though Lambie doesn’t shy away from tackles, he rarely dominates in the tackle in that channel. We are just lucky to have a player of his calibre covering in the backline, and HM knows that.
