Builders Quiz Cape Town

Sharksworld, as media partners were invited to participate in the Cape Town legs of the increasingly popular Builders Sports Quiz held at the Grand West Casino and Entertainment World.

The Sharksworld team consisted of Salmanoid, whose commitment to anything must never be questioned as the bugger drove in from Worcester (only a 220 km roundtrip), Craig Lewis of SARugbyMag fame, some mates of mine who I thought would know a thing or two about football and me, to pour the drinks.

Now I must admit that when Rob mentioned the event and asked me to head up the team my first thoughts were “sports quiz, pub quiz , same thing right?” Wrong!

Arriving at the hall we found a rather large, and growing crowd waiting for the doors to open. Once inside is when things got really scary, 30 + tables with many of them containing the who’s who of Cape Sports and celebrities. WP Rugby had a team, Ajax CT were there, Supersport members, Espresso show and Sport 24. Good times.

MC Dan Nichol welcomed everyone and after a few jokes we were underway, well sort of. The ragtag bunch I had recruited had looks that switched between shell shock and despair while Salmanoid and Craig displayed their value in the early exchanges. Questions about golf, women’s surfing and ultra-marathon running were answered with confidence while the rest of us guessed in order to fill the answer sections in the booklet.

At the half time break we were pleasantly surprised to learn that no, we weren’t among the basement dwellers and our projected score of 5 was actually a solid 13. We attacked the buffet to nourish our minds and got stuck into the second half of proceedings with renewed optimism, safe in the knowledge that we didn’t completely suck.

We dropped a few points answering cricket questions more due to miscommunication than anything else but recovered well with football and rugby. We even managed to get an American Football question correct, it should have been two but in researching for the event two of our teammates had not realised the SuperBowl 2015 had already taken place and gave the answer for the 2014 event, it would have been ok were it not for them beaming and bragging “ don’t worry fellows, we’ve got this! SORTED SORTED SORTED” , it was hilarious afterwards.

At the end of the evening when all the points were tallied Sharksworld ended up with a very respectable mid table finish, we were only two points adrift of Heart 104.9 FM who I had picked out as direct opponents for the evening due to a running banter I have with them every Saturday.

Pro Sport and Builders Warehouse really put on a fantastic event yesterday, the welcome drinks, the catering, the gifts and the mc were all top drawer and I am looking forward to next years’ event. Thank you so much to Salmanoid, Craig Lewis, Lindsey Williams, Ryan Ravells, Robert Adams and Stanford Ross for their time and effort and also for being full value as teammates last night, its safe to say we all had a bit of a jol.

Till next year

  • brilliant stuff gents.

I trying my best to get the guys to come to PE. The local Radio station Algoa FM ran a series of quizes where the overall winning team went to Ellis Park to watch the Boks vs AB game. my team ended 2nd, only as we started in round 4 of 7 and missed easy points in first few rounds.

    really holding thumbs!

  • Great stuff Clayton. I blame the mid table finish on John Smit.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : Did you also pick up that some faulty pre-tournament preparation work got a dash of the blame?
