One plays four, two plays three and we have some spicy derby-cum-grudge-matches in the other two fixtures. Welcome to Currie Cup, where things are about to hot up.
Ok, so that’s my stupid pun section out of the way – let’s dive into the action.
Griquas take on Free State in possibly the least exciting clash of the rounds (derby nature notwithstanding) this evening (7:10pm). Neither side has yet tasted victory and Farnco Smith’s Cheetahs must be the disappointment of the competition so far. It’s never easy to pick a winner here, but you feel Griquas are due a home win over fancied opposition, so we’ll back them to take the spoils here.
Griquas to win a relatively dull game, by around 6 points.
Griquas: 15 Gouws Prinsloo, 14 Ruhan Nel, 13 Jonathan Francke, 12 Michael Van Der Spuy, 11 Ntabeni Dukisa, 10 Riaan Viljoen, 9 Tian Meyer (captain), 8 Carel Greeff, 7 Hilton Lobberts, 6 RJ Liebenberg, 5 Hugo Kloppers, 4 Jonathan Adendorf, 3 Stephan Kotze, 2 AJ Le Roux, 1 Danie Mienie.
Replacements: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Ewald Van Der Westhuizen, 18 Jaco Nepgen, 19 Leon Karemaker, 20 Rudi Van Rooyen, 21 Clinton Swart, 22 Jacquin Jansen.
Free State Cheetahs: 15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Sergeal Petersen, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Ryno Benjamin, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Niell Jordaan, 7 Henco Venter, 6 Gerhard Olivier, 5 Francois Uys (captain), 4 Armandt Koster, 3 Luan de Bruin, 2 Jacques du Toit, 1 Caylib Oosthuizen.
Replacements: 16 Elandre Huggett, 17 Nicolaas van Dyk, 18 Reniel Hugo, 19 Tienie Burger, 20 Freddy Ngoza, 21 Ruan van Rensburg, 22 Sias Ebersohn.
Kicking off at the same time is what I call the “grudge match” between the Pumas and the Kings in PE. Luke Watson has cried off injured again (about time – he’s played almost two full games since the last one) leaving Steve Sykes to captain the Kings this week. They come up against a Pumas team that were great in patches against both the Sharks and the Lions, but probably still need to find that 80 minute performance to announce themselves as true contenders. The Kings did better than expected at Kings Park last week, but also have some fresh injuries to contend with, as well as the laugh-a-minute form of Scott van Breda at fullback to worry about.
I’d love to back the home side here, but I can’t. Pumas will take this, by around 9.
Eastern Province Kings: 15 Scott van Breda, 14 Siyanda Grey, 13 Ronnie Cooke, 12 Phillipus du Plessis, 11 Luther Obi, 10 Karlo Aspeling, 9 Enrico Acker, 8 Tim Agaba, 7 Jacques Engelbrecht, 6 Thembelani Bholi , 5 Cornell Hess, 4 Steven Sykes (captain), 3 Tom Botha, 2 Martin Ferreira, 1 Schalk Ferreira.
Replacements: 16 Lizo Gqoboka, 17 Edgar Marutlulle, 18 Simon Kerrod, 19 Cameron Lindsay, 20 Paul Schoeman , 21 Kevin Luiters, 22 Hansie Graaff.
Pumas: 15 John-Wessel Bell, 14 Bernado Botha, 13 Jerome Pretorius, 12 Stefan Watermeyer (captain), 11 Rosco Spekman, 10 Juan-Claude Roos, 9 Francois de Klerk, 8 Jason-Colin Fraser, 7 Uzair Cassiem, 6 Marnus Schoeman, 5 Marius Coetzer, 4 Rudi Mathee, 3 Khwezi Mona, 2 Frank Herne, 1 Corné Fourie.
Replacements: 16 Francois du Toit, 17 De-Jay Terblanche, 18 Lubabalo Mtyanda, 19 Jaco Bouwer, 20 Reynier van Rooyen, 21 Justin van Staden, 22 Hoffmann Maritz.
Saturday is the day when the real action takes place, starting with the Sharks against the Golden Lions at Kings Park (5pm kick-off).
The Lions will feel they hold all the aces here – they’re top of the log and haven’t looked like losing. That said, a funny stat comes into play, in that the Joburg side hasn’t won a game in Durban since 2007. The Sharks are weak up front this year, though and it remains to be seen whether a stronger midfield unit will result in fewer points scored against them.
I think we’ll be pleasantly surprised, though and will see a performance full of pride and guts from the men in black. Sharks to take this game by just 2 points!
Sharks: 15 Joe Pietersen, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Paul Jordaan , 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Sibusiso Sithole, 10 Lionel Cronje, 9 Michael Claassens, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Daniel du Preez, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Marco Wentzel (captain), 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Monde Hadebe, 1 Dale Chadwick.
Replacements: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Gerhard Engelbrecht, 18 David McDuling, 19 Jean-Luc du Preez, 20 Stefan Ungerer, 21 Wandile Mjekevu, 22 SP Marais.
Golden Lions: 15 Jaco van der Walt, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Stokkies Hanekom, 12 Howard Mnisi, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Marnitz Boshoff, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Ruaan Lerm, 7 Kwagga Smith, 6 Jaco Kriel (captain), 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Luvuyiso Lusaseni, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Robbie Coetzee, 1 Ruan Dreyer.
Replacements: 16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Jacques van Rooyen, 18 Martin Muller, 19 Steph de Wit, 20 Ricky Schroeder, 21 Alwyn Hollenbach, 22 Anthony Volmink.
The final game is the traditional north-south derby, with Province taking on the Bulls at Loftus at 7:10pm.
Of the two, the Bulls have arguably been in better form and you’d have to bet on them to take the points here, in the process catapulting themselves to the summit of the tale (who saw that one coming?). Province have been reasonable this year without ever rally dominating and I just don’t feel they have the firepower at this stage to upset the Bulls at Loftus.
Bulls to win by 8.
Blue Bulls: 15 Warrick Gelant, 14 Travis Ismaiel, 13 Dries Swanepoel, 12 Burger Odendaal, 11 Jamba Ulengo, 10 Tian Schoeman, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Hanro Liebenberg, 7 Roelof Smit, 6 Pieter Labuschagne (captain), 5 Marvin Orie, 4 Jacques du Plessis, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Dean Greyling.
Replacements: 16 Jaco Visagie, 17 Dayan van der Westhuizen, 18 Rudolph Snyman, 19 Jannes Kirsten, 20 Ivan van Zyl, 21 Louis Fouché, 22 Dan Kriel.
Western Province: 15 Cheslin Kolbe, 14 Dillyn Leyds, 13 Johnny Kotze, 12 Jaco Taute, 11 Seabelo Senatla, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Nizaam Carr (captain), 7 Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 6 Rynhardt Elstadt, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Jean Kleyn, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Oliver Kebble.
Replacements: 16 Siyabonga Ntubeni, 17 Alistair Vermaak, 18 Chris van Zyl, 19 Chris Cloete, 20 Jano Vermaak, 21 Kurt Coleman, 22 Huw Jones.

I would like to make the same picks but at the risk of sounding like a big fat whinger, even before kickoff, Craig Joubert is the main official and after the 2010 s14 final Pretoria boys are not his favorites – putting it mildly.
I hope I’m wrong.
Cheetahs, Pumas, Lions, Bulls
Heart always says Sharks. Head says Lions.
While I am suitably impressed with the patriotic back of the Sharks…and I, as always, will back them on Superbru…I really will be surprised if we can pull off a win. I also see the Cheetahs coming good with their Shimlas/end of Super Rugby game and winning a relatively high-scoring game in Kimberley. I also have a suspicion that the WP scrum is markedly stronger than that of the Bulls but am sitting on the fence there…so in Superbru I’ll back the Stormers and in Fantasy League I’ll back the Bulls. So my picks? Well, I only score 25% against Rob’s model answer:
– Cheetahs by 13
– Pumas by 12
– Lions by 8
– Bulls by 5
don’t come with your “logic”, you fair-weather fans! 🙂
@vanmartin (Comment 2) : @pastorshark (Comment 3) : I also went with those picks. I hope the Sharks prove me wrong thou.
Have you noticed how many teams have ex-Sharks or Sharks discards playing in them? Most.Sharks by 5 over Lions,Pumas by far,Griquas by 3 or so & WP by 4!
@robdylan (Comment 4) :
@Farlington (Comment 5) : You clearly show the makings of a tremendous rugby brain with those picks!
boss is making all the women go with they partners for women’s month guys getting nothing. atleast i have season tickets
@robdylan (Comment 4) : By the way, Rob, happy anniversary! God bless!! Is THAT the reason for the pink site?
@pastorshark (Comment 10) : thanks dude!
And no, not really.
I’m a pink salmonoid, cool.
@robdylan (Comment 11) :
@pastorshark (Comment 3) : Weather accepted the only thing I have to go on is their performances against cheetahs. And there I must say the bulls were far more expedient on attack. So I will give it to the bulls with a small margin.
As for the sharks game….I was born with blinkers so I don’t see any other team but them on the field. Sharks ..scrape scrape……scrrrr. …
@robdylan (Comment 4) : I blame it on all the pink 😀
@coolfusion (Comment 14) : But the weather was the main issue…they played a dry weather game in pouring rain and were rubbish at it. The Bulls were also not flash at a dry weather game in dry weather for 60 minutes. So that all doesn’t tell us much. I just think that Province have a far better set of forward and on that basis have the advantage. We’ll see…
Cheetahs to win by 9
Pumas to win by by 6
Sharks to win by 1
WP to win by 8
I need a reason other than rugby to go to the game tomorrow.Rugby I get on my T.V.
@The hound (Comment 19) : I won’t be at the game tomorrow. It is the Harburg Fest and Tour de Krantz tomorrow…that means MTB Classic, Beer Fest, German Meat and Produce Sale, Oompah Band and a lot of fun! We may even have more people there than were at King’s Park last Saturday!
@pastorshark (Comment 20) : how late must I be there?
@pastorshark (Comment 20) : Sigh, its a sad day when the prospect of pork sausage and sauerkraut indigestion,a serious Bavarian hang over, and scorched eardrums, beats a day at K.P
But you are right you’ll probably make the numbers
@vanmartin (Comment 16) : don’t blame the pink it is never the pink!!!!! 😈
@The hound (Comment 22) :

You should put it like this…good beer, good mates, good party…and a good big screen with rugby…beats a day at KP! Besides, I’m playing in the oompah band…with my “Tiroler Hut”…armed with several jovial “Juhuhu”‘s…
@JD (Comment 21) : We’ll be there all day…
(literally…I think registration for the MTB starts at 6:30 or something ridiculous like that! Breakfast from 7:00…beer from mid-morning) 😆 It’ll be fun…
@pastorshark (Comment 24) : I have far too nervous liver and a sense of hearing beaten to a pulp from too many years in a rock band to take you up on your offer, Pass.,enjoy.
@The hound (Comment 26) :
So Fred gets his second start in a row…good luck, son…
Not many people or their dogs coming out on Friday evening in Kimberley…
So kick off in PE looks to be 10m earlier than in Kimberley…
Kings apparently steal the first lineout and drive it 20m… 😯
The Cheetahs are on the field…
…and here come the Kwas…
Roos slots a penalty and the Pumas lead 0-3 in PE…
Fred gets us underway…
Seargal Petersen is bumped off after the kick off…
Cheetahs start with some high pace stuff…repeated phases…left and right before they are into touch…
Kwas win a penalty at the lineout…
Hugh Bladen is on top form…
Now Griquas scrum…
Cheetahs got a turnover but then passed it forward…
Penalty for the Kings so 3-3 in PE…
First scrum…first free kick…to the Kwas…
Bit weird…the scrum collapsed…and he gave a FREE KICK? OK…
Second scrum…rapid blast on the whistle…penalty Griquas…
Penalty Pumas…3-6 after 14 mins in PE…
Kwas nail the penalty and make it 3-0 after 7 mins…
Fred with a brilliant half break and hand off…Cheetahs clean through…until Blommetjies drops an easy pass!! Ohhhh…poor!
Should habe been a try that…
Third scrum, third infringement…penalty Cheetahs…
Fred will take a shot…
He hooks it badly…and it stays 3-0…
Another penalty Cheetahs…
From their own 10m line Fred puts it out on the 22…
Fred with another half break and a good back of the hand pass…Venter with an open line can’t gather and he knocks it on!!
Ai!! That should have been a second try from a Fred break…and the second time his mates knock perfectly good passes!
Cheetahs look full of running tonight…
Fred with another good run…and this time the Cheetahs round it off and score…
TMO to check for a forward pass…
Try time…good play by the Cheetahs backs…
Move started by Fred…he has been excellent with ball in hand tonight…
3-7 after 16 mins…
High tackle Cheetahs…
Kwas kick for the corner…
Advantage Griquas straight away at the maul…and penalty…
Kick for the corner again…
Great steal by Uys and Fred clears it to halfway…great stuff Cheetahs…
Huge tackle by Rhule on Riaan Viljoen…
In PE it is 3-6 after 27 minutes…
Viljoen is playing 13 (!) and Brummer 10…
Jeepers Viljoen has a boot on him…
More good running Cheetahs…and another penalty kicked to the corner…
Cheetahs get another penalty…
Another kick to the corner…
Cheetahs with a big maul that is somehow kept out!! Wow…great last ditch defence…the Cheetahs boy just went to early…then the Cheetahs backs again drop the ball with an open line!! Ai…that is three tries butchered!
Cheetahs creating chance after chance but not finishing…
Big pressure on the Griquas scrum…somehow they clear it and Cheetahs attack again…
Great play Cheetahs…on the line…
More good play Fred…just kept out…
Penalty Cheetahs…and now general warning Griquas…
Steven Sykes is yellow carded in PE…still 3-6 after 36 mins…
After an injury break Fred nails the penalty and it is 3-10 after 28 mins…
Looks like a dog fight in PE…
Great passing Cheetahs…until another flipping knock on stops the move…
Scrums are a bit of a dog’s breakfast…
Now a great scrum by the Kwas and they get a penalty from it…
If I was the Cheetahs captain I would be livid…he has a legitimate complaint to the ref and the ref just says “Please move back…” Ai!
6-10 after 32 mins…
Fred involved in another good move…that ends in another knock…
Pumas still can’t score in PE…
Another good Kwas scrum, but they then run very laterally and are bundled into touch…
The Cheetahs with relentless high paced stuff…they must just finish it off…
Another penalty…another kick to the corner…this time they lose the lineout…
Kwas take it quickly, break out…and then they knock it…
Good steal by the Kwas there…
Cheetahs under real pressure at scrum time, but run it well…and then knock itnagain…
Kwas counterattack, but they move breaks down too…ai!!
Pumas lead 3-6 at half time…sounds like the Kings, though, have dominated territory and possession…
Kwas lineout on the 10m line…they attack from it…
Penalty to the Griquas at the breakdown…
Kwas will take a shot from halfway…
Dukisa (the No. 11) nails it easily and makes it 9-10…
That is halftime…
The Cheetahs have made all the running…but are only a point ahead…
The Cheetahs will be disappointed…so many chances created, but so few finished off…in this case some really poor handling with open try lines…
Sounds like lots of extra work by cheetahs due to bad execution. No dstv signal at the pub. Should have streamed at home.
The Kwas have defended well, have been stronger in the scrums…but haven’t done much more…
Fred has played very well…he missed a kicked and put one kick directly into touch, but his running game has been wonderful to see!
They have started again in PE…no change though…
The cheetahs should have had a bonus point before half time!!
What is up with the poor handling?!
@pastorshark (Comment 111) : Sounds like we have a shot at top 4
@coolfusion (Comment 106) : Somebody at the pub should be fired?
@coolfusion (Comment 112) : Look, I’m loving the fast paced game of the Cheetahs…they are quick at the breakdown and run hard…but they just can’t flipping catch those final passes…
@pastorshark (Comment 113) : Yup. Tomorrow I’m streaming
@coolfusion (Comment 112) : Mind you…we don’t stand back to anybody when it comes to knocking the ball on! We can do that as well as anyone…
Here we go with the second half…
Penalty Kings makes it 6-6 after 48 mins in PE…
@pastorshark (Comment 116) : Yup we have oosthuizen
Pumas couldn’t score while being a man up!
@coolfusion (Comment 119) :
Kwas sloppy at the lineout…knock on…
Huh? Scrum Kwas?
Both Kwas props replaced at halftime…after they were dominant? Interesting…
Frist scrum is now reset for the third time!!
Free kick Cheetahs at the fourth scrum…wow…
Really quick ball and good play by Cheetahs…until…
@pastorshark (Comment 124) : Andre Markgraaf doing backflips in his lounge….let’s hope it’s a plan and that they don’t pick up injuries.
Surprise, surprise…knock on!!
This time the Kwas dominate the scrum again and win a penalty…
Cheetahs attack again as the Kwas can’t kick it out…
Fred runs straight through and scores under the posts!!
Wow, he has had a good game!!
The conversion is good and it is 9-17…
Meanwhile the Pumas have another penalty in PE and it is 6-9 after 55 minutes…sounds exciting!!
Great maul Cheetahs…penalty…
And another general warning for the Kwas…
Great try Cheetahs…Rhule straight through the middle…quick ball…try time…
TMO to check for obstruction though…
Hmm…6 of one and half a dozen of the other…
No obstruction…try time…
Fred nails it from touch and it is 9-24…
Cheetahs right on top now…finishing off better now…
And another penalty Cheetahs…
Penalty advantage Cheetahs…and there will be a card here!
Fred kicks for the corner…
Gerhard Olivier scores off the back of the maul…too easy!
Bonus point and game over…9-31…
Meanwhile the Kings have scored and lead 13-9 after 61 mins…
Pumas also doing a fair bit of knocking…
Now Cheetahs penalised…
The ref warned the wrong oke…ni wonder he was upset!
Cheetahs defend well at the maul but Kwas still attack…
Now Maks van Dyk is yellow carded for swearing at the ref… 😯
Kwas lineout 5m out…
More really great maul defence Cheetahs and now they counter from their own line…
Really good play until the Griekwas get the ball and clear it…
Shaun Venter with a dislocated finger…ow!
Pumas with another penalty and it is 13-12 after 68 mins…close finish there…
Kwas and Cheetahs props sitting next to each other in the cooler…
Kwas with a nice attacking position here…
Now Pumas knock on 5m out against the Kings!! Ai…
Kwas win the scrum penalty and kick to the corner…
Skew throw…
Cheetahs request the lineout instead of the scrum…
Kwas almost score from the lineout but knock it…so now it will be a scrum…
Cheetahs knocked it first so Kwas scrum…and it is a penalty against them now…
Meanwhile Pumas have kicked another penalty and lead 13-15 going into the last 5mins…
Great Fred pass send Peterson clean through…his passed is knocked down and the Cheetahs have an attacking lineout…
The Cheetahs stuff up the lineout and it is a Kwas scrum…
Van Breda misses a penalty to retake the lead…so still 13-15 with a minute to go…
Cheetahs lead 9-31 after 67 mins…
Kwas run it from their own line…
Nice little grubber by Meyer but he just doesn’t get it…
Sias on at fullback…Fred deserves to play this game out…
Kings miss a drop kick, attack after the hooter but still fall short…final score 13-15…tight win for the Pumas…
Cheetahs with a turnover…
Poor pass is well cleaned up by Rhule…
Cheetahs knock again, Griquas counter…beautiful grubber picked up by Viljoen…he knocks…
Cheetahs counter…then Griquas counter…now Cheetahs counter again…
Well…after all that it is finally into touch…
Plenty of replacements for the Cheetahs…
Nice attacking chip by the Kwas winger…but Benjamin gets there first and runs it out…
Wow Rhule was away chasing that one but was tackled without the ball…but not seen by the ref… 😯
Scrums still being reset more often than not!
Penalty Kwas at the scrum…
Another penalty Kwas…
They pick the scrum…
Cheetahs turn the ball over at scrum time…wow…
So a minute to go…will the Cheetahs run it?
They win penalty at the scrum…and kick it upfield…
Last lineout…
And…fittingly…a knock on brings the end of the game!
The Cheetahs will be very satisfied with a win like that in Kimberley! Though it could have been FAR bigger!!
So wins for the Cheetahs and Pumas means we could be 6th by the end of this weekend!! Come on Sharks!!
Fred will surely be MotM…
Yup, Fred is MotM…very well deserved. He was really good!! Looks like we might already be missing him!
Griquas weren’t great tonight…scrum was good, defence in the first half was good…but otherwise not much!
Cheetahs looked very good. If they can sort their finishing, they will be very dangerous…
Fred being highly praised…
The stats show that the Cheetahs really dominated this game (apart from the scrums)…
The Pumas will be chuffed with the win in PE, though it sounds as if the Kings had much of the play and the Pumas made many mistakes…given that, they will be delighted with an away win!
Does anyone know where one can find official stats for Currie Cup games?
@pastorshark (Comment 203) : I’d love to see the actual stats for the Kings-Pumas game…
Well, that’s all the rugby action for tonight…
So…on Supersport Blitz the Currie Cup results and highlights are relegated to the end of the bulleting…every other sport comes before it, even sports that don’t have games on but just where they tell us of how some guy hasn’t done something for a while! 😯 Wow, a sign of how much the Currie Cup is worth nowadays?
@pastorshark (Comment 200) : always liked Fred and was sad to see him go!!!! Don’t really know how they let him go?!?!?
@JD (Comment 207) : Well, he was very good tonight…also had what sounded like a go in his interview: “The Cheetahs let me run with the ball and do what I like…” (and the Sharks didn’t, he didn’t have to say…
Sure the cheetahs let you do what you want but there is something to be said for order planning and structure. Ask all the other teams that have been winning trophies in the past 5 years.
I had cheetahs. Although I thought they would pull away earlier. I really thought kings were going to tough it out started good bit second half came unstuck lots of handling errors.
@pastorshark (Comment 203) : Why not download the vodacom app? Works for CC supers internationals world cup.
@coolfusion (Comment 209) : Sorry bud, but Sharks won all their trophies with more attractive rugby, than the shyte they dished up in the last two years.
@KingCheetah (Comment 212) : I never said sharks had any structure in the last 2 years. Quite the contrary, Which is my point.
@coolfusion (Comment 213) : They had too much! Well in their style anyway. It was all conservative, kick from own half and play territory
