Opportunity looms for Sharks under 21s

The senior Sharks Currie Cup side aren’t the only ones facing a tricky home fixture against the competition log leaders; Michael Horak’s under 21 side face a Lions team on Saturday that are also perched at the top of the log, with a massive boost in log position looming for the underdogs if they can pull off a victory.

With Western Province and the Blue Bulls (who are below the Lions) facing each other at the weekend, the Sharks could find themselves moving closer to the top two should they pull off a win against the Lions. Unbeaten in the past two rounds (against admittedly inferior opposition), the Sharks will feel that they at least have some form coming into the game, but would be foolish to underestimate the magnitude of the challenge that awaits.

Horak has kept the changes to a minimum, welcoming back two players who missed out against the Kings last week due to niggles. Star scrumhalf Rowan Gouws returns for the benched Lotter Pretorius, while Graham Geldenhuys moves back to flank to make place for Ayron Schramm. Mzamo Majola and Mthunzi Moloi – arguably the two stronger scrummaging props – move back into the starting team after benching last week. There’s also a welcome return for Zimbabwean international Riaan O’Neill on the bench; he missed last weeks game due to a test against Namibia.

Sharks under 21:
15 Alrin Eksteen, 14 Neil Maritz, 13 Nkululeko Marwana, 12 Marius Louw (capt), 11 Sipho Mkhize, 10 Inny-Christian Radebe, 9 Rowan Gouws, 8 Ayron Schramm, 7 Retief Marais, 6 Graham Geldenhuys, 5 Hyron Andrews, 4 Johan du Toit, 3 Mthunzi Moloi, 2 Andrew du Plessis, 1 Mzamo Majola.
Replacements: 16 Kerron van Vuuren, 17 Barend Potgieter, 18 Ruan Kramer, 19 Jean Drotse, 20 Wian Vosloo, 21 Lotter Pretorius, 22 Riaan O’Neill

Paul Anthony’s under 19 side are well out of sight of the play-offs, but coming up against a fourth-placed Lions side that hasn’t won many games themselves, will fancy their chances to move closer to contention should they finally be able to pick up a win.

Anthony has kept his side virtually unchanged this week, with positional switches for Rowan Coetzer (lock to number 8) and Michael Meyer (number 8 to flank) and a promotion to the starting team for lock Chrisite van der Merwe. Cameron MacNab, who played flank last week, has returned to Namibia for international duty and there is thus a new face on the bench in the form of Northwood’s Dunran MacDonald.

Sharks under 19:
15 Morne Joubert, 14 S’busiso Nkosi, 13 Chris Lines, 12 Wayno Visagie, 11 Tristan Blewett, 10 Tristan Tedder, 9 Jaywinn Juries, 8 Rowan Coetzer, 7 Bernardus Haring, 6 Mike Meyer (capt), 5 Christie van der Merwe, 4 Rikus Zwart, 3 Johnathan Vorster, 2 Bradley Roberts, 1 Marq-Anthony Lombard.
Subs: 16 Erich Kankowski, 17 Wentzel Vorster, 18 Kabelo Motloung, 19 Dunran MacDonald, 20 Ulrich Sellar, 21 Willem Badenhorst, 22 Kyle Rhode, 23 Brent Christoffels

  • hoped Morne Joubert and Nkosi would get drafted up to u21 to increase the options there.
