The Crusader will go into the Murray Cup final this week as underdogs, but that has not deterred the side or the coach in anyway. Benedict Chanakira managed to chat to former player, Ronnie Uys who is now the coach and is looking to rebuild the club !

Hey Ronnie, how are you?
I am well thanks.

Tell us, who is the this former burly prop who terrorised scrums moons ago?
An old rugby player who is trying his hand at coaching.

What was your most memorable rugby playing experience?
We may have been thumped, but I was so proud to get my first Super Rugby cap for the Cheetahs against the Crusaders.

You are now in your second season with Crusaders? How has it been?
Yes, I am going into my third season and I have been able to go up the ranks from player coach, to full coach and I love this club. It is a family club, the people, fans and administrators are looking to stick together as we look to grow as a club.

Tell us about your road to the final?
We had a hot and cold season, the Murray Cup’s a cup we have always done well in. We may have played some fist division clubs along the way but we are happy to have managed to go through, we had injuries galore too but the players just went out there and made the jersey proud. I would also like to give Jaguars a lot of credit. They gave us a run for our money and pushed us all the way.

Underdogs? Are you going to use that to your advantage?
Yes we are. We are taking on College Rovers, who are one of the best clubs in the country and we will be up for it. I believe in the boys and I hope that we keep the game tight and competitive like our clash here a few weeks ago.

What are you looking to achieve at Crusaders rugby in the next 5 years?
If the five year plan, I have right now goes accordingly and we stay on this path we will have the side back to the top of rugby in SA, and hopefully fulfil the desire to play in the Community Cup. We want to see the club in its glorious moments again.

Thanks Ronnie, all the best in the final!
Cheers Benedict!

  • He certainly has brought Saders back up to a top 3 club. Those forwards are very well drilled.
