  • I am going to be uber-positive and say – watch the Sharks surprise everyone and peak right and win the Currie Cup (and no, you can’t have what I’m smoking).

  • Just a question. Is heimar Williams not better than Esterhuizen? More skilled, better feet etc. I was critical of Williams when he was picked over whitehead back in the day. Just think he adds a bit more value than the big youngster.

  • Only tumed in at half-time, but as soon as I saw who yhe ref was, I knew we had no chance. We never have a good game with him. All those scrum penalties against Thomas were wrong. I would think our guys would be much better than the Bulls in our steamy conditions, though. Way too many handling errors. Very disappointing. Now we’re wishing for miracles to et a semi spot….

  • @T-Shark (Comment 63) : The first half 50/50 scrum calls went for Sharks. I think this ref in particular guesses which way to blow. Even I could see Kruger slipping his bind scrum after scrum. And Andy Capp going on about how experienced he is.
But I was really impressed with the Sharks’ defense. It really improved light years from where you were in Feb.
Like Gold said at half time, only one lapse and a try was scored.
With so much posession the Bulls should have had a bonus point try. So kudus to the Sharks.

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 71) : my personal opinion is that with so many players (especially the youngsters!!!!) opting to play overseas as well as SA rugby’s obsession with having 6 teams playing Super rugby the talent pool is seriously under pressure and I can’t see it improving in the future!!!! Basically our rugby is in deep shit and a serious rethink is needed before it will improve!!!!

  • We played with two unrated locks and the held up. I actually saw Mjekevu defend and make some try saving recoveries and tackles. Sure Reinach made some bone head moves but he was truly in it with heart and commitment we want him to have. I counted 3-4 times when these boys don’t defended the line phase after phase after phase where previously other teams slipped us as easy as they wanted. That try by esterhuizen which was disallowed shied his awareness and some creativity that is awesome to watch. Sure we haven’t won the cup or even the game but can’t we also for once find the positives. It does look like these boys are trying to improve. To me that is a win. Now you can pick me apart and point out the negatives.

  • I thought Philip captained the team very well, and the players seemed to react positively to him.

The front row is growing week by week and you can actually see progress.

The backline to me looks uncomfortable on attack. Defensively they have come on in leaps and bounds. But the ball in hand rugby still to be seen.

My concern is we are seeing a trend same as in SR where the boys improve towards the latter of the campaign and then we rebuild again for next campaign.

  • I would like to point out that the team as a whole played their hearts out. Reinach although having a poor attacking game was defensively superb. This is not a third rate bulls team by no means.

This is a team with very little experience. We had 2 debutants tonight and a number of guts with a handful of games. I was impressed with the commitment by all

  • @coolfusion (Comment 77) : Agreed. Definite improvement, I was most excited by some commitment shown in defense. Both teams struggled with handling due to the humidity. What really let us down was impatience in our decision-making. If cooler heads prevailed a win was a possibility. I’d also stick with our ginger assassin as captain, there’s potential there.

  • @YamYam (Comment 80) : Good to know – as I said earlier, would like us to invest in Philip as captain. Sorry, Lambie for me can at most be a vice or part of the leadership team.

  • Comment 84, posted at 26.09.15 08:56:22 by GreatSharksays Reply

  • @YamYam (Comment 80) : Principles aren’t in place and our coaching is reactive. Always copying other teams and not being leaders. Heard a while ago that Sean sees backline moves on a Saturday from the hurricanes for example, the team practices them during the week and implements come next game. So there’s no principle we base our attack on. Like a particular formation and ensuring that the ball carrier has options on his left and right and he is also a threat.

  • Comment 85, posted at 26.09.15 09:02:46 by GreatSharksays Reply

  • I really don’t like blaming the ref, but the Bulls second try came from a penalty that should have been Sharks ball, the AR even said so.

  • Comment 86, posted at 26.09.15 09:49:36 by Die Kriek Reply

  • Bulls number 17 came on and every scrum thereafter collapsed. As a spectator who played front row it is terribly frustating to watch.

The reality is we need to be improving the standard of our refs. Its not just the ref who is poor. We had a linesman who gave a mark outside of the 22.

  • Maybe the guys need to have a more structured pre-season where all aspects of the game are covered and tested. Meaning more pre-season friendlies against other SR teams (even a couple in NZ). Start these warm up games early…even if it means 40 minute games. Don’t want this reactive clueless play where improvements are only seen in the last quarter of the competition.

  • The one thing that stood out most for me is Esterhuizen’s reading of the game. He just seems to read exactly where the ball will be. Now if only we had a skills coach or even just a decent backline coach that can help him improve his other skill sets like offloading etc. Can’t we send him to play in NZ for a ITM season or so? Imagine the player he will be then?

  • @byron (Comment 81) : Once a scrumhalf is only praised for his defensive abilities that is when you know your game has gone to the dogs. Please understand that the speed of your game and therefore ability to score tries depends on your scrumhalf. There is no silver lining when it comes to Cobus. He has failed in his core requirements from day one. I for one have been his biggest critic cause his side steps and tackle ability mean shit for me cause the other 98% he dishes up is pure shit. He is probably the slowest game management and passing scrumhalf in the country. Hougaard used to own that title until Nollis got a hold of him. He also tries too hard to be the main man instead of doing the basics first and maybe take his chance in the fifth sixth phase. He is not a team player. He is the most selfish player. Unfortunately Everitt and Gary don’t even have the know how to identify and correct this. Wish he had left instead of that boy Jake identified as the real deal.

  • Never mind the ref. The Sharks were lucky to have lost by only 4 points.

Or perhaps I should say the Bulls were unlucky not to have scored 5 or 6 tries.

They do play nice, don’t they? ‘cept for the scrums.

  • I was only able to watch the game in patches but did see us do some good as well as the usual missed tackle, silly penalties etc. I think we need to keep in mind that barring 2 games the Bulls have looked very good this CC whilst the Sharks have been pretty average…so in terms of that this reason shows we are able to compete. I just feel we lack the overall quality that sides like the Bulls, WP and Lions have. There has been a lot of coming and going at the Sharks recently so until we get some consistency going all we can hope for is steady improvement.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 115) : I think we forget that a lot of their side are youngsters and new to this level of rugby. So whilst they playing well and things working out their confidence will be high. But as soon as things start to go a little wrong then self doubt creeps in and not having the experience to rectify it means it can go very wrong. Funny thing about confidence though- it doesnt take much to get it back again

  • No matter who the coach is going to be in 2016, if he can’t appoint his own assistant coaches, then he is also going to struggle. It boggles my mind how a team that is suppose to be one of the most professional sides in rugby only has a 3-man coaching team. Hell, these days you need a head coach, backline coach, forwards coach, scrum coach, line-out coach, skills coach, defense coach, fitness coach, team psychologist etc. So even if we could get Sir Henry, he will still struggle with all the muppets “coaching” at the Sharks.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 128) : I heard someone (Kaplan maybe) commenting that there are so many simultaneous infringements at scrum time that it often comes down to the ref simply picking the one he considers most serious or most blatant.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 129) : Me and a friend was talking about the same thing on the weekend. But I think the biggest problem come scrum time stems from the call from the ref. The ref gets the front row to form and crouch, then he has to do that stupid pause before he can say engage, and no two refs has the same length of pause, so your props are trying to hold their balance and waiting for the idiot with the whistle to allow them to engage, so once the instruction comes for the engage, at least one of the props are off balance, I think that is where a lot of scrum collapses come from. They should just go back to the old days of scrumming where you just crouch and engage, the props will sort each other out. But yeah, thats just my opinion as a prop

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 130) : Agreed. I think a lot of the rules in rugby can do with some simplifying. I do however like the way the breakdowns are being officiated at the World Cup. Is it just me or do the calls across games seem to have some consistency for the most part?
