The Sharks of 2016

With all the coming and goings during a season – and announcements being made thick and fast – it’s often quite difficult to keep a clear picture of exactly what’s going on, squad wise. I thought I’d take a few minutes to jot down my current view of the Sharks senior squad for 2016, almost as a sort of baseline that we can update as and when new arrivals and departures are announced.

Bear in mind, of course, that none of this is official, but just represents my attempt to collate all the information available. I would certainly expect this group to change to some extent by the time Super Rugby kicks off in February next year.

  • Interested in your analysis of this group, guys. Where are we weak? Where do we have too much depth?

  • @robdylan (Comment 1) : We may have the numbers but lack the quality at hooker and lock. Props and wings have some unknowns and some members that need to live up to reputation.

  • Hooker, and Lock have depth, but no really big names that I have confidence in. Interesting that you think Chris will be in the senior selection frame without getting any U21 game time due to his injury, I hope you right though.

Center needs some strengthening definitely, we have the same amount of scrumhalves as we do centers. And only one or two good players, the rest are untested, old, or inconstant.

  • The loose forward cupboard looks really well stocked. We have potential at centre at least but really need the group to develop and get to the next level this SuperRugby season.

  • Tighthead prop. Our main TH has been average at best (when fit), and the next 2 in line are LH converts

  • In my humble opinion – Hooker is the weakest section by far! I had hoped that Franco Marais would prove to be good – not so sure any longer.

  • TH, Hooker, Lock, not at the standard we need.

Flyhalf depth (even with Joe, very iffy).
Our centers are also not proven at SR level. Esterhuizen are the only one I’m excited to see in a full season at 12. Paul has been poor.

With Willie there, if he can find form, I’m happy with the back three, but, again, we look very thin if injury should strike.

Not very confident with this squad. I think it’s because so many of them are just not proven SR players.

  • Got to say Tighthead is my main concern. Adriaanse hasn’t been the same since joining the Sharks, Thomas still looks like a loosehead trying to be a tighthead, Coenie never looked comfortable at tighthead and gets injured often when he does play there. I wish we kept Herbst. He was looking the part and our loss is Ireland’s gain.

  • I think the tight 5 is an area the Sharks have been a bit weak in the last year or so, especially taking into account the injuries. I think there is enough backline quality and the right mix and matching is all thats needed. Up front i think a few loosies need to be told that lock is where they are headed, especially the slower guys. Im a bit unconvinced by our hookers as well as i dont see much mongrel there unless Cooper gets some form back. There was a small school of thought a while back of playing Coenie at hooker though…

  • @JR (Comment 77) : Sithole is much better at 13 than on the wing.

He tackles really well and gets more involved in the game. He’s wasted out on the wing. Nick Mallett agreed with that statement after the last Super Rugby game and said that he thought JPP and S’bura should have been switched.

  • So in essence – Big news needing further exploration:

    1. Kanko ditches 15 code for sevens

    2. SP omitted from 2016 list

    3. Brendan Venter….not writing for SS anymore, and not on the 2016 coaching roster – seemingly dropped off planet earth?!

Lambie is the only guy in that group that screams Super Rugby quality at me.

Joe is a fullback, doesn’t have the complete skill set for a 10 for me.

Inny is young and inexperienced. I would be nervous if Lambie copped an injury in the first 10 minutes and Inny has to face up to the likes of a Sapoaga.

He hardly played this year, was touted as the captain but never made it onto the field and then he just disappeared.
I can almost pin point his demise as a player ,he was a fantastic rugby player, a personal favourite of mine, then in a super rugby game against the Bulls at K.P, I remember Bakkies pulling him into a maul and seriously sorting him out. I watched it thru my binos and it wasnt pretty he never recovered from that and has been a passenger ever since.

Habana proves that being on the wing doesn’t need to mean that you’re not involved… I see Sithole as a carrier rather than a distributor – maybe unfairly and it’s certainly about what I like in an outside centre rather than anything more objective…

props we start with the best we have with the inconsistent guys on the bench

hookers should look better with better players in the pack

lock still lack quality and fitness

loose forward, depth for days so managing work load and form is important so every one is fresh but not under cooked, or worse over played

MC is the best we’ve got at scrum half

after lambie fh gets dodge as inncy is still young and petersen is good. But i dont trust cronje

centres we have good options but no world class just yet

back three there are tons of options

I hope jaco van tonder finally gets a chance to player a bit

Good team there, just one problem, I have to say it again, but we have absolutely no SuperRugby level hookers available. Really tough, all our hookers are good journeyman Currie Cup players, but I am afraid no more. Marais may have a shot, but he has a lot to prove.

If it wasn’t for that, I’d have Marcel Coetsee as captain….but I’d like my captain to be around during pre-season too.

Which brings us to our second problem….Robert du Preez won’t have any time to get to know a lot of seniors whilst they are in Japan. (which is probably the main reason for Gold hanging around as head coach).

  • @ChrisS (Comment 113) : @vanmartin (Comment 114) : I’d have to agree with either Marcell or Lambie. I’d side more with Lambie as he seems to have command of the team more than Marcell. As much as I think Philip would be a good captain he’s brand new to the squad and how can we expect guys who have been around for 4 to 5 years to follow a guy they don’t know to well. Tera could be an option but a loose forward captain is a problem because he will probably be rotated throughout the tournament or be injured (hopefully note). Beast is the only old campaigner I can think of but he’s unlikely to play full games. If only we have a solid lock who looked like captaincy material and didn’t run off to the Cape after saying he owed the union…

  • @Hulk (Comment 122) : Speaking of rotation, we need to do that a lot. Ackerman rotates after each game, ensuring his second stringers are match fit and can fill in when needed.

It’s a fine line balancing continuity, keeping everyone happy and getting the mix right for games, but you simply can’t play the same team week in week out anymore.

  • @StevieS (Comment 123) : 100% rotation is important. It does become tricky when ur first choice guys dont get a result. Then do you rotate in guys of lessor ability and risk another result or play your 1st choice until you get a result. Its a tough balancing act. Especially if being judged on results. The flip side of the coin is you hold some of your best guys back to rotate in with the weaker guys.

This guy has a lot of rugby left in him,he is calm on the field and has such a wealth of experience.
He takes control when he gets on the field and all the players seem to respect him.
I am also keen to see how he and Lambie combine,I think that could be a deadly combination, especially under the tutelage of the man who almost single handily reinvented modern scrum half play.

Only thing I’m worried about is a comment Gold made in the CC season, I’m paraphrasing here but it was something along the lines of: “our Boks are always first choice”. With the duppies out of the picture, I suspect that Lambie will have fewer opposition to leading the team – the Duppies just never came across as players willing to play nice with the other boys, especially when the other boys are making the decisions.

The issue is going to be keeping the second and third string guys happy (Mtembu, both du Preezs, Kleinhans, Majola) – feels like we’re going to lose some here. For me, keeping the du Preez boys should be the priority – however tough that is on the guys coming through. Given the problem at 4, it solves two problems if Pogeiter can be a success at lock…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 144) : I like the sound of those combos.

Then loosies could be Marcell, Bothma and Philip; and the du Preez twins with Tera, or one with Tera and Majola and the other with Kleinhans and Deysel at 8. Can achieve balanced combinations and keep the opposition guessing.

Another thing, we seem too reactive, like we want to see what the opposition do then react to that, I want us to be innovative and make other teams have to react to us.

  • If all are fit I’d be interested to see who the first choice lock combination is. I see lots of guys are rating Giant but Potgieter played mostly at lock for the Warathas (as far as I can remember) and his skills have come a long way since leaving the Bulls so I’d be inclined to go with 4.Potgieter 5.Lewies.

@SheldonK (Comment 149) : High tempo suits us. Hitting with runners coming off the 9 or 10 at pace, then quickly clearing the ruck ala Charl McCleod and unleashing our backs to expose their centre before swinging the ball wide. That way you earn the right to go wide. We haven’t earned that right in a long time.

  • @StevieS (Comment 156) : I think Deysel is not fit at the moment and probably carrying too much weight. He has never developed a passign game as coaches were happy with him just bashing through. When he was a bit slimmer he could at least compete at the breakdown. I fear Bothma could fall into the same trap as Deysel having watched him at RWC. Needs to drop a few kg and learn to pass a ball.

I’m tired of SA players and coaches being obsessed with size. Luke Watson was a great fetcher, but he bulked up too much and lost that. I remember him and Roland Bernard wreaking havoc playing in tandem and earning praise from the Aussie and Kiwi commentators.

Ok for real 2, 3 and 4 is a big concern as I don’t think Sharks have Super rugby quality players (that’s in form) available!!! JS must pull a rabbit out of a hat and sign at least one quality player in ea h position before Super rugby starts.

  • @JD (Comment 175) : Eish im not sure i have as much faith in Lewies and Wentzel as you do. Lewies has serious injury issues and Wentzel cannot play every game like this year. The guy is also no spring chicken. Potgieter would be effective as your number 4 type lock that just gets stuck in…Giant to lessor extent which is why i think a guy like Bothma could add value there. But who would you realistically look at as a no. 4 acquisition?

Milner Skudder fits almost exactly into the Habana category…which means SA does pick the Milner Skudder type and would most certainly pick him if he was eligible for us. I agree with the idea of not picking Kolbe as a Bok…he is just too small…

Cape Town – The Cheetahs’ Springbok lock Lood de Jager has opted to stay in Bloemfontein despite lucrative offers elsewhere.

According to Netwerk24, several teams were after the 22-year-old’s services, but he opted to stay at Free State for at least another year.

French giants Toulon were believed to be after De Jager’s services, as well as other local South African teams.

With De Jager recently signing a two-year Springbok contract with the SA Rugby Union, the Cheetahs were able to retain his services.

The 2.05m giant played nine Tests for the Boks in 2014.
