Daniel du Preez (loose forward)
Jean-Luc du Preez (loose forward)

The Sharks are awaiting the return of the following additional players from Japan:

Renaldo Bothma (loose forward)
Marcell Coetzee (loose forward)
JP Pietersen (wing)
Willie le Roux (fullback)

Namibian lock Tjiuee Uanivi has not been named in the squad as we understand there are some formalities relating to his signing that still need to be completed.

We are advised that the following players have been released to seek other playing opportunities:
JC Astle (lock)
Marco Wentzel (lock)
Wiehan Hay (lock)
Lionel Cronje (flyhalf)
Waylon Murray (centre)
Jaco van Tonder (fullback)

  • Tough on the players release, but I feel the right move. Thank you for your service!.
Curious why Conrad Hoffmann is still around?

Definitely our weak points are hooker and center, with hooker being the worse off.

Is there any details regarding how serious the injuries are?

  • Some names in there that I don’t recognise.

Who are Marius Louw, Sibusiso Nkosi, Hyron Andrews and Barend Potgieter?

Are there any names not mentioned in the main squas, the injured or those let go?

  • Conrad Hoffman still around? Perhaps a bit harsh on Wentzel and Cronje but both paying the price for a very average 2015. But overall i cant complain bout the guys cut…just surprised not more names there

  • Hoffmann joined one of the Irish sides (can’t recall which) as a World Cup joker and is now back. And once again injured.

I would imagine that he cannot be released to “seek new opportunities” while injured, since that wouldn’t be fair. So he’ll probably complete his rehab for whatever this latest injury is and then be released.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 2) : They are all from this year’s under 21 side and very deserving of a shot.

    Marius Louw (inside centre)
Hyron Andrews (lock) – a Junior Springbok so you should have heard of him!
    Barend Potgieter (loosehead prop)
Sibusiso Nkosi a winger from the under 19s.

I want to get an idea of who we might decide to lend to the Kings.

Matric isnt the toughest these days but still dont want to put more attention on the guy at this time by naming him in a super rugby training squad. It would be the right thing to do to let him join when he is fully finished there.

  • A good squad to be fair. Not the quality of depth the Sharks are used to, but a rebuild, or re-stock (more apt) was inevitable at some stage. Lots of youngsters, and yes the glaring areas for me are in the backline. I think hooker is a concern, but enough potential there. Props look well stocked, but also many new faces.

We’re probably only now getting rid of all the junk left behind from the Jake era. (no offense meant to the players dropped).

Between Gold and Robert du Preez (who I guess had a fair bit of input into the players being dropped), the hard decisions have now only been made, and we’ll now only be able to accurately judge Gold for what he’s done.

    1st in Lineouts stolen – 14

  • @Seth101 (Comment 57) : If I’m correct teams needs to submit their squads before the season starts and only those players may represent the team so when players leave to participate during World Cups or when a player is a long term injury European clubs are allowed to call up a player(s) to replace the player(s) they lost. It is however only for two to three months.

But I think now is a chance to start with a clean slate, better to do that growing a younger team then to give an expiring player a spot in the 23 just for a little impact. Honestly amazed that Odwa is still around, I guess we would be short on wings without him.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 128) : Disagree, defense is not one dimensional, there are different types. As a 12 you have to be a brick wall, you have to spend the whole game with every player from 1 to 15 running at you over and over. At 15 its more like a game of pong, you sprint from top to bottom trying to not let anything through the gaps. In the modern game if your last line of defense is a single man at fullback your more than likely screwed.

In my mind 15 does not need to be a defensive expert, they need to be good under the high ball and good on the counter attack.

Personally I think it is crazy to even mention Willie at 12, he does not have the attributes of 12 what so ever.

on the subject of guys being let go

JC Astle (lock): injury issues but young and will have a solid career, could be at another union or overseas

Marco Wentzel (lock): Not a huge surprise to me ot him id think, he did great for us last year and im sure they communicated with him. I’d
like to take this chance to thank him for stepping up during last years SR and CC it was clearly tough on his body and he didnt always have the best of games but we could never, and i mean never question his commitment.

Wiehan Hay (lock): injury issues fo sometime now, but his big and young and can still make a career of rugby

Lionel Cronje (flyhalf): has ability, just not the player we need, i wish him the best

Waylon Murray (centre): like Marco, his a star past his prime, maybe time to retire buddy, you were a favourite of mine back in the day

Jaco van Tonder (fullback): Same as JC, young and can still be a big time player aka another tyler fisher

PS: with things falling apart in stormer land, its a good day to be a Shark that lives in cape town!!

If Paul Jordaan, can run on with prestik in his hands, he might make a fine 13. That guy just drops way to many passes for a top flight rugby player.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 144) : I’m also tired of seeing 7 flanks in the 12 jersey….Tim Whitehead got the most out of Jordaan, because he’d hit a half gap then draw the outside defender abd then squeezed his pass through a key hole to Jordaan.

The stock standard SA 12 batters his way over weak deffenders, but dies with the ball when up against half decent defense.

Now if our big boys were taught to combine their size withh proper ball skills, then that would be a different story.

The point i was trying to make is that all Sharks (Boks) fans want a new game plan approach and new dynamic rugby…yet we dont want to pick players with different attributes. I just find that it interesting that when it comes down to it the critics still go with the same.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 145) : this is not about size, but tackling ability.willie at 12 on defence will not work.
Oz have hooper and pocock playing in tandem.fardy also.
Those loosies get around the field .
Giteau might be small but he has the heart and technique for tackling,to go with his playmaking abilities, it seems .same goes for the japanese players.they rushed and gang-tackled.
Just dont think that is something we need to burden willie with.but on attack, sure, give it a go.
Heimar seems the better option if he can toughen up defensively.by this i mean if he can enjoy the confrontation at 12.also ,lets see what johan deysel can do.
Perhaps bosch and hernandez would be a better example.not big but they get the job done.

  • Comment 147, posted at 20.11.15 09:03:18 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 147) : Im sorry but you cant play ur 12 based on who you have at loose forward. It seems Giteau/Toomua/Jap players have more heart on defense then say Willie. (Interesting thought that). My preference would probably be Williams at 12 (I do rate Deysel but havnt seen him play top flight too much so jury still out at the moment). I just feel (personal opinion) that if the Sharks want to play a more dynamic game then we need a good passer/play maker at 12 not a basher. Whetehr that guys is or isnt Willie is not the issue. Willie will play 15 (can almost guarantee that)

  • Comment 148, posted at 20.11.15 09:15:28 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 149) : yes he will play 15,but the idea of moving willie closer to the action (which you tried to do by having him at 12),has merit imo.just would not personally have him in either the 10 or 12 channel on defence. On attack from 2nd phase and even from first phase, it could work.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 149) : i tried this same thing in one of my first posts on here: trying to put as many playmakers into the backline.but i had a bit of a fantasy backline by including rdp,jr at 12.so it is not about wanting to play a big basher at 12.i did put rdp,jr there because i think he can bring a balance to 12 on both attack and defence.

  • Comment 151, posted at 20.11.15 09:36:47 by 50shadesofshark Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 144) : First off, nowhere did I mention size? I spoke about ability to defend, I don’t care if you are 50kgs, if you can cycle through tackle after tackle then you can defend at 12, don’t mistake that for me saying we need a Nonu (Which I still think we do but different reasons).

Your right Aus do have a play maker at 12, but then they switch it up and have a monster at 15…. I don’t disagree with Andre at 12 and Willie at 15 with Willie coming into 12 on attack. In fact that is how I would structure my back line.
As for Japan, they had one ‘good’ world cup, I’d hardly say they “operate extremely successfully”.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 150) : Have been punting Rdp jr at 12 for a while. Even suggested that on that fan survey.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 152) : Calm down i was generalising. But then again in your post you do say you want the bigger guy so not sure. The problem with the Willie switching in on attack at 12 means that you are then left with Esterhuizen having to make the crucial decisions out wide in order to finish the try scoring chance, and i dont think he has that ability just yet. Ive also said there is more than 1 way to structure a team…but i disagree that you need a big guy at 12 to defend

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 147) : in World cup Oz sometimes on defence shifted Giteau to the wing wit h13 moving to 12 and the wing to 13.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 154) : I disagree about Andre, personally I think he should be playing wing. So for him to move out wide an Willie to come in at 12 on attack would be perfect for me.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 157) : Wing yes. But at ’15’ he would have to make the crucial decision out wide and set up the wing for the try or go over himself. Its an area i feel even LeRoux is weak at and why a lot of Bok tries dont get finished off but when Lambie replaced him those moves do result in tries. The only way LeRoux is going to get better at those decisions is playing there so im happy for him to be at 15 and Esterhuizen on the wing. But we do need a good passer etc at 12…so a Williams/Deysel etc. If Sithole could figure out how to pass him at 12 would be awesome

  • @SheldonK (Comment 158) : I don’t disagree with that, and coaches can restructure the back line during attacking moves to cater to our players strengths. I just personally think Willie is far to average a defender to select him in the 12 slot over someone like Andre who aside from his other flaws, is a tried and tested monster on defense.
You have to stop tries just as much as you have to score them.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 159) : Andre is a dominant tackler when he manages to get into the right place, but is a little naive in terms of positioning on defence. Also turns like a frikkin battleship.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 159) : Look Willie was perhaps an extreme example of picking a guy in that 12 thats a play maker. But then again i dont want to pick a 12 on his defensive ability as then we back to the same old approach. So we need a balanced player…and perhaps neither LeRoux nor Esterhuizen is that player.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 164) : Perhaps…but with every 10 leaving WP they will throw money at him to stay. Im just not sure the Sharks will trhow that kind of money at him…unless Lambie leaves

  • @SheldonK (Comment 166) : your 12 could have sound defence and playmaking abilities.at present you say sa teams selects brutes at 12 who try to smash you in the tackle and smash over the adv line.
Find the playmaker who has sound tackling technique and add required muscle (if necessary) to that skillset?

  • @Seth101 (Comment 171) : Id still love to see Williams get a decent run and not just a couple games here and there. I also liked what ive seen in Marius Louw. Im of the opinion that we need to reward the guys from within if we ever want to get pride back in the jersey. Bit the bullet short term for long term gain

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 174) : Yeh partly. He went and played Varsity Cup for Stellies and WP offered him a contract as they had lost Swiel. WP u21s were a lot stronger at the time so chose the winning team. Now he is there no.1 at 10…even after his nightmare in CC final. They will be banking on him a lot in 2016. And i reckon he will think play first choice at 1 Union is better than second fiddle to lambie in Durbs
