SARU are sending reinforcements

Hi Sharks fans. So the Kings saga continues to dominate the headlines, with player ‘recruitment’ for the Kings’ cause the new talking point.

The latest news has Francois Hougaard, a SARU contracted 7’s player, being linked to a playing role at the Kings. The Bulls have denied this, saying that they want him to play for them, but with a hefty fee of R100 000 per game reportedly being demanded by SARU for them to release him, this doesn’t seem too likely.

The fact that SARU could use Hougaard as he is contracted to them opens up some exciting possibilities. Can we therefore expect Ryan Kankowski to also join up with the Kings at some stage, and what about some of the regular 7’s players?

Then there are the reports suggesting SARU will ask the other franchises to supply some of their fringe players. The question I have for you readers is, who can we possibly supply from the Sharks, and for our readers from the other franchises, who do you see your unions loaning to the Kings?

To my mind, we have Marco Wentzel, Jaco van Tonder and perhaps some of our better u21s from this year who could certainly provide quality to a severely depleted Kings team.

Your thoughts?

  • It would be great! The Kings could take some Pumas, Sharks or Bulls players etc on loan. This would definitely strengthen them and offer depth. I also saw some of the players they have some quality I must say!

  • @bchanakira2 (Comment 1) : Bulls could loan a lock as they have about 6 on their books or maybe even a centre. Lions maybe a No 8 because they Booysen, Lerm, Venter and Whitely.

Deploy them to the worst run franchise in SA…I’m sure Cheeky would be well chuffed with what he has achieved 😯

I agree totally. The Sharks are in a building phase and they need to see how everyone plays before they can decide on who to have in the squad. To give the Kings some of our “best U 21’s” is LUDICROUS!!!!!

The bulls have, in the last week or so, contracted 3 Kings players and they are still speaking to another 3. That was either on News 24 or on Supersport. They can give those players back to the Kings where they belong.

Why should we give our players away? FRINGE players maybe but not the best from ANY age group.

    This whole idea is crazy!

  • the situation at the Kings is not ideal

they didnt look great in the CC, and now they have lost a few good players

that having been said, im pleasantly surprised at the players they were able to get in SP, visser, louis Fouche though not world beaters are decent player that will add value

I havent seen their final training squad but my concern is there forward pack

as we saw with the sharks his past CC is your tight five isnt up to it your dead in the water no matter how good you backline may be

but best of luck to the Kings, they really surprised me in 2013, but I think 2016 might be a rough year for them

eventually they’l develop a team like the lions have, over time

  • I think it is a good opportunity to give talented young players a chance to play Super Rugby that they might not get in their home region.

Does anybody remember the Sharks borrowing Gary Botha and Pedrie Wannenburg before they were Bulls stars?

Why keep a player in the off chance that we may need him when he could get a full season of Super Rugby under his belt and come back to us a better player?

  • The danger of loaning players to the Kings would mean they would be bound to that Union for the duration of the competition. Should we face injuries and need them at some stage …they would be lost to us.

  • Comment 25, posted at 25.11.15 04:38:27 by DaveB Reply

  • If I had young talent I would want to expose them too soon to SR. My existing talent I wouldn’t want to risk injury and use them myself. So what does that leave? The guys I don’t really want and underperforming players. Underperforming players can benefit from regaining some form without being a risk to myself. The guys I don’t really want but are contracted to me I can recoup some fees by “renting” them. It could work to some extent.

  • @DaveB (Comment 25) : I think loan agreements would be set up that stipulate under what conditions players would be required to return. That is how it works in football and also how it worked recently for the dolphins cricket team – Ryan McLaren was loaned to the Knights for the T20, but as soon as Abbott was picked for the Proteas, McLaren was recalled to the Dolphin…

  • I think it’s an opportunity to send some younger guys who aren’t seen as needed for Sr to get 1. Some experience in that league and 2. Let’s the coaches see what they offer. For example are we going to use Marius Louw at any point at 12 this season, if not then let him get the basics right this year so he’s ready come 2017.

And Kings now have the benefit of fielding some of the most expensive players in SA….just reward for running their union into the ground – I guess the other franchises should also burn through any money they have, stop wasting time to procure sponsorships, and have SARU reward them with the best paid coaching and players in the country…..I think you’ll see a similar system employed in Cuba.

In terms of skills they need to get Sithole/Esterhuizen/Jordaan working together on adding some finesse to their game in terms of passing/chip kicks/grubbers etc. So perhaps they can work with someone like Joe Pieterson in the squad on those aspects.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 78) : @SheldonK (Comment 80) : It does make sense. I think they need to see who gels best with who and then make combinations. e.g. Heimar and Jordaan as a centre pairing, Esterhuizen and Sithole as another. It would take a lot of work and planning and buy in from the players.

@SheldonK (Comment 77) : He isn’t training yet, but I read somewhere he’ll be ready.

  • @Poisy (Comment 70) : I agree with you. I said in a previous article that we should be sending guys returning from injury to play some 7’s to get their fitness and skills up.

All of our top players should be exposed to 7’s at some stage in order to teach them to attack space, offload in the tackle and pass effectively.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 78) : I like that idea!!! We definitely have to rotate.

I’m more a horses for courses kind of guy though. Choose teams to nullify the oppositions strengths while also looking at the players as individuals and deciding when they need a week or two off to freshen up. We can’t play our players into the ground the way Jake White did…we need to start looking at the bigger picture.

We have lost a lot of young talent because they never ever got a chance. Think Redelinghuys, Mark Richards, Mnisis, Cronje.

Don’t give them as much game time as the first choice guys but give them enough to make them feel part of the Sharks family and to keep them hungry and working hard to crack the first-choice 23!

  • @SheldonK (Comment 81) : I’m all for Sithole playing centre. His defence is amazing and he just needs help with his passing game.

Maybe some time in 7’s would sort that out for him.

  • Comment 87, posted at 25.11.15 10:42:39 by ChrisS Reply
  • @StevieS (Comment 82) : It’s a good idea in theory but you can run into problems when a centre goes down injured. Then all of a sudden your combinations aren’t in place anymore.

It’s a better idea to get the guys used to playing with multiple partners. That way you can mix and match depending on form, injury and the opposition.

All 4 of those players should be rotating frequently so that they’re all sharp and hungry. Nobody must be assured of their place in the team!

  • @SheldonK (Comment 49) : don’t confuse soccer with rugby. In Super rugby if a player has played for a team he is not allowed to play for another team during that season. For all intend and purpose the player on loan is a player of the team he plays for and can play against all opposition including his “own team”.
However if you loan a player to a team to play Vodacom Cup you may recall that player to play Super rugby for you.

  • @JD (Comment 90) : Yeh look i was referring more to the clause in some soccer contracts than anything. If what you say is right about a player being team bound then i would assume that teams would not be happy loaning out their top 3 guys in each position.

  • Comment 93, posted at 25.11.15 10:51:05 by SheldonK Reply

  • @JD (Comment 90) : That’s how it works. I think you can also loan between Currie Cup Premier and Currie Cup First Division teams and have the ability to recall a player.

  • Comment 94, posted at 25.11.15 10:51:22 by ChrisS Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 93) : It would be intersting to see how so called “fringe” players like Wentzel, Cronje etc. do against the starting options in their positions in a live match.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 91) : I agree with you. I would like him back in that environment though as I feel it would help his skills a lot.

There is a decided lack of basic skills in SA Rugby and the 7’s players who feature in the Currie Cup (Senatla, Kwagga Smith, Boom Prinsloo) often seem more creative which I think comes from their time in 7’s.

Nobody wants to see any sa side lose badly. A good Kings side will mean that sides like the Sharks, Bulls, Lions etc will have to play well to win and thats only a good thing.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 96) : Well why arent coaches replicating that 7s environment at trainings etc? When the tight forwards are working on scrums and lineouts etc the rest should be playing 7s etc to hone fitness and skills and utilise space. Its during that time that skills coaches need to earn their paycheques

  • Comment 100, posted at 25.11.15 11:00:04 by SheldonK Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 98) : For sure!!! I don’t want to see any SA side take a 50 point thrashing week in and week out!

I’m beginning to think of the Kings as the SA Renegades side from a few years back where all of the fringe players were pooled together and played warm-up games against the other SA sides.

A few stars emerged from that side…Rudi Kyle and Schalk Burger for example.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 92) : you know they won’t because they will have to use SARU money to pay SARU!! Players signed contracts with SARU and not with the Bulls or Sharks therefor they are no longer employed by either the Bulls or the Sharks and so their contract holder SARU can use them where they’re needed. Has nothing to do with fair or unfair both Sharks and Bulls have more than enough cover at 8 and 9 to allow for the players to play for the Kings.

    @50shadesofshark (Comment 97) :
Let me break it down to how I see it:

If the Bulls want to use Houghaard = They can’t unless they pay R100 000 match fee.

If the Kings want to use Houghaard = They can because they ran their union into the ground, and thus SARU will pay the fee.

    Am I missing something here?

  • Comment 107, posted at 25.11.15 11:29:53 by FireTheLooser Reply

  • @StevieS (Comment 105) : not sure the teams will think so but for the players it will be a great chance to show what they can do. Teams like the Sharks can also benefit by loaning some young and fringe players to the Kings as they will get Super rugby experience way sooner than they would have at the Sharks.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 107) : yes SARU can use their employees where and how they want (within reason). Both players are employed and paid by SARU and have nothing to do with the Sharks and Bulls. Let me put it to you if the Leopard decide to loan a player to Sharks for free but charge R50 000 per game if the Lions want to use him, then as his employer it’s up to them and has nothing to do with me or you.
I’m sure SARU will handle the people that ran their union into the ground and will not be rewarding them!!!!!

Get real it’s way better for SA rugby to have the best players play Super rugby than waist them in Vodacom cup because we want to make a point about the Kings!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 109) : Cheeky Watson is president…to my limited knowledge he can only be voted out, and not fired – there is no news of anybody looking to challenge him for the presidency.

How long before the Cheetahs expect similar treatment to that which the Kings have received – and why shouldn’t they also be given a pick of top tier players at a subsidised fee?

SARU is setting a precedent here, and as the national body they are equally responsible for the well being of all our unions – not just the poorly managed ones.

  • @JD (Comment 110) : I’m not talking about the fringe players – I’m talking about the players who’s contract fees are at a premium….

Fringe players are exactly what the Kings can afford….the Lions built a very strong team out of fringe players, and that is good for SA rugby – the Kings should do the same.

Premium players however being deployed at an ill managed franchise – at the expense of their “former” teams….that gives the ill managed franchise an unfair (and undeserved) advantage.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 107) : I don’t see Cheeky and his cohorts escaping from this one scot free.

There will be a time for them to be held accountable for their actions, but the main priority for SARU now is to get the Kings ready for Super Rugby.

I know you’re upset, and I asked the question of why the Lions weren’t bailed out of their financial crisis by SARU, but let’s control what we can. In the long run this may benefit SA rugby as a whole.

  • @StevieS (Comment 114) : Once again…Lions didn’t get a bail-out and it seemed to be exactly what the doctor ordered – they fought their way out of that hole, and look how strong they are now.

Kings however being bailed out – they’ll keep running themselves into these situations and never truly make a success of things, unless they are forced to fight their way our of this mess…..that’s just my humble opinion.
