Last night saw a number of the Sharks faithful joining forces one again. The ultimate objective? To defeat the challenge set forth by the evil overlords wonderful organisers that put together the Builders Sports Quiz.
Considered to be the toughest quiz in the world (as decided by a quick poll conducted at our table), this contest has brought many a proud sports enthusiast to their knees. While our table absolutely nailed the one solitary piece of Sharks trivia thrown our way, victory sadly eluded us. For some strange reason our “Black and White, nothing else matters” motto, which on the night could be paraphrased to “if it has nothing to do with the Sharks, it’s not a fact worth remembering”, served us less than well on the evening.
As is true of all Sharks supporters though, we do our best work when the odds are against us and with this knowledge spurring us on, we managed to reach the dessert line first. What followed can only be described as poetry in motion. We proceeded to attack the malva pudding with a gusto and, dare I say, grace that took my breath away. The efficiency with which the boys applied the rush, the pilfer and ultimately the sweet, sweet score as spoon met with mouth would have caught any of the best defences off guard.
A huge thank you to Rob for the opportunity. Thanks must also go to our fearless leader Richard who managed to somehow keep us middle of the pack despite our efforts. Thank you fellow team members for laying off the bowl of chilli and leaving me with the heartburn today. Finally, thanks to Builders and all the partners for an amazingly fun evening. Hope we can do it again next year!

Any finish outside the top 4 should see your coach and management side fired on the spot or at the very least dragged to the gallows 🙂 And in other thoughts…any chance of publishing the questions?
@SheldonK (Comment 1) : To save on our drinks budget we never bothered to appoint a coach or management and managed to perform averagely without their help. Mission accomplished!
The questions were read out aloud and my memory of them has already faded into a custardy haze.
Nicely written,Martin!
@vanmartin (Comment 2) : I think we need an investigation into your budget allocation…do yo know a Cheeky Wat Son? 😉 haha i figured with the questions
@Pokkel (Comment 3) : Cheers!
@SheldonK (Comment 4) : I can’t disclose any numbers as I’m hoping for a SARU intervention 😈
@vanmartin (Comment 2) : enjoy the heartburn mate you deserved all the chilly you could eat!!
Ja must say it was great fun and must also thank all my team mates for the fun and Rob for the opportunity to take part! Was really nice to meet you all!!
Remember guys there’s always next year……..
Well written Martin. You had me laughing all the way through 😆
Glad you guys had fun and got to meet up. That’s what makes Sharksworld so great.
..when will the next Fast n’ Loud episode be released…(Blood, Sweat and Beers: Richard Rawlings autobiography) 😉
Good read Van….can always count on the Sharksworld humour to give a bland news day a lot of colour.
What a terribly misleading headline… Here I read the whole damn article, eagerly anticipating a fullsome discussion about beer, and instead all I’m faced with is haughty, hoity, stick it up your toity, high and mighty, tight-nosed, toffee-arsed, sun-dried-tomato-eating lah-de-dah-dy lah-de-da malva pudding….
Nice one, Martin!
@Culling Song (Comment 10) : there was also beer lots and lots and lots of free beer but the malva pudding was reeeaaally lekker!!! ;-P
Good one men. I need to get to one of these sometime…
@Culling Song (Comment 10) : Pulling a Derek Grim on me isn’t going to make me make me feel bad about it 😀
@StevieS (Comment 7) : @FireTheLooser (Comment 9) : Thanks for the kind words.
@JD (Comment 11) : I don’t usually like malva pudding but that hit the spot
@pastorshark (Comment 12) : I reckon you may have a half decent shot at answering some of those questions.
@JD (Comment 11) : There was free beer and you guys still couldnt conjure up answers. Your conditioning seems to be lacking…i hear Mark Steele has a bit of free time now if you interested
Nice write up. Free beers!!!!….that wasnt the case in the Cape Town leg grrrr 😈
@pastorshark (Comment 12) : Do it, its great fun, a lot of the questions are pretty obscure but its amazing that the are some people out there that know nearly all the answers.
Thanks for the write-up, well said and really enjoyed your play by play of the dessert round.
Great meeting all you guys, next year we will be better prepared, as we now have a brilliant excuse to watch every single channel on the SuperSport bouquet.
I will try remember some of the questions and pen them down, but anybody on this site that knows who the SA Sevens coach was in 1993 without Googling it, will earn bragging rights..
@SheldonK (Comment 15) :
Would you be able to tell us who the FIFA Women’s player of the year was for 2014?
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 17) : I have a feeling the 1993 7s coach is an ex Bok coach… @Richard Ferguson (Comment 18) : Asking questions about Women’s sport is a bit unfair as nobody cares. Think it was some Brazilian chick wasnt it?
@SheldonK (Comment 19) :
At the end of the day, these questions might not seem too difficult, but when you are sitting around a table and nobody even has the slightest idea, and the MC is already onto the next question, it gets tough.
Unfortunately, all sport matters to these guys, even being given a photo of a darts player and being asked to give his name. Its a bit ridiculous at times..
@SheldonK (Comment 19) :
And don’t think that if you watch English football that you will get those questions right – Try naming the joint top scorers in the Copa America competition!
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 20) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 21) : Thats what the beers are for…to get those creative answers flowing 🙂
@SheldonK (Comment 19) : A bok himself as well as the father of a modern era bok. Another one that stumped us was: “who is the captain of the Australian women’s cricket team?”. One we managed to get right is which South African lady cricket player, captains all three national sides (20 overs, I day and 5 day sides)?
@vanmartin (Comment 23) : I see they asked all the easy questions 😉 Im surprised they didnt ask stuff like which hand Nigel Owens used to flip the coin in the RWC final..
@vanmartin (Comment 23) :
And that guy, with the hair, the Irish replacement flyhalf, with the kak hair…
@SheldonK (Comment 24) :
We got that one wrong, I fancied him a lefty…
@SheldonK (Comment 24) :
One of the easier rugby questions was:
Which 1995 World Cup Final player was involved with a team that made the 2015 Varsity Cup final…
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 25) : I’ve already forgotten his name again.
Here’s one for the pastor: When the English premier league was started, which English club finished top of the first division? (hope I got the wording right).
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 27) : Speaking of that guy…did you see him in the Jonah Lomu film Back to SA? The guy is looking old
@vanmartin (Comment 28) : Ian Madigan
@SheldonK (Comment 30) :
That’s him..
@SheldonK (Comment 30) : That’s the guy.
My favourite answer of the evening to a question that went something along the lines of “who was voted the most improved ladies soccer player?”
Cristiano Ronaldo.
Oh, and the best comment of the evening goes to JD who drove up from the Free State to join us. The runners-up each won a lawnmower. JD’s deadpan response to seeing that: “It’s just as well we didn’t come second, in the Free State the warranty will run out before we’ll see enough lawn to mow.”
@vanmartin (Comment 32) : Id mark that correct 🙂
@vanmartin (Comment 33) : hahaha. I would have loved to see Rich explain to the airport staff why he has to check in his lawn mower…hahahaha
@SheldonK (Comment 15) : it was not giving answers that was the problem it was finding the right answers that caused all the problems! 😈
@JD (Comment 36) : haha they make those things so technical 😉
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 16) : seems to me they know who can handle free beers and who can’t 😈
@vanmartin (Comment 32) : ja that was funny!!!!!!!!!!! 😈
@JD (Comment 38) : Clearly, we are more papsak onder die tafel type around here.
@JD (Comment 38) : But you cant handle your dips and Malva puds.
We had vegetable chips for snacks 😯
Section 1: Cementing a place in history.
Q1 – Should Roland Schoeman go to the 2016 Olympic Games, how many would he have competed in total?
Q2 – Who won the Giro d’Italia in 2015?
Q3 – How many Grand Slams did Boris Becker win?
Q4 – Wladimier Klitschko lost only 4 times in his career so far, Tyson Fury being the last. He also lost to Lamon Brewster and Ross Purrity. Who else did he lose to?
Q5 – The FedEx Cup has been won twice by non-Americans. Henrik Stenson did it in 2013, who won it in 2008?
Q6 – Who led the Japanese at the Rugby World Cup
Q7 – Who has made the most appearances in the Cricket World Cup (50 overs event)?
Q8 – The 1992/1993 season was the first Premier League Season. Which current Premier League team won the First Division title that year?
Q9 – Wayde van Niekerk won gold in the 400m event at the World Champs this year. Kirani James finished 3rd, but who was second?
Q10 – Which horse did Stuart Randolph ride in the 2015 Vodacom July?
Some of the above were not too bad if you look back at it, but we managed to get 2 out of 10 for the above set of questions.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 43) : Definitely not the easiest questions. Especially if asked randomly
@SheldonK (Comment 45) :
Be honest, how many would you get?
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 40) : @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 41) : @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 42) : hahaha ja boet was a great night with lots of fun!!!!!!!!!! Great to meet some of the guys on the site (don’t know if it was great for them to meet me being one of only a handful of “Middle Earth inhabitants” on the site) but had great fun!!!!
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 46) : Eish 3 possibly. Rest would be a serious guess
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 43) : Ouch. 2/10 for me. Q7 & Q8 which were more educated guessed than knowing.
Thought I could get Q3 & Q6 but a quick google shows I was mistaken.
@gregkaos (Comment 49) : ronde nulletjie for me
wait, wasn’t Michael Leitch the Japanese captain?
@robdylan (Comment 51) : sweet – got that one 🙂
actually knew the answer to Q8 as well
@robdylan (Comment 53) : we missed you boss next time you must join us.
@robdylan (Comment 53) :
The roundball question? Wow..
I will try post the rest of the questions today…
