Kings latest

Hi Sharks fans! The latest news is not that detailed, but in a nutshell here it is:

· Luke Watson has NOT been offered a contract.

· The Kings players offered contracts have accepted. The alternative being that the Pumas would play Super Rugby in their place. Caught between a rock and a hard place, the poor players had to accept a massive salary cut to ensure their livelihood. I know people will see this as betraying their poor uncontracted fellow players, but let’s be serious, people have to survive.

· The contracted Kings players will receive their outstanding EPRU salaries as part of the deal.

· The uncontracted Kings players will still have to rely on the EPRU for their outstanding salaries.

· There are about 20 odd players who have been offered Super Rugby contracts.

As always, watch this space.

  • Really can’t blame them for signing, but is still bad for the uncontracted players

  • Personally while I can see why they did it, I would have rather they heald out. At the end of the day EPRU walk away scott free and Watson dives back into his money like Scrooge McDuck.

  • 17 players were going to be offered contracts, Luke was part of the initial 17. Now 20 players are getting contracts and Luke isn’t there. Willing to bet my house that Luke forfeited his reduced package for 4 more players. Did a simple sum and concluded that the package being offered is peanuts and would rather go down as that guy. Besides, his family has lots of thom.

  • I never had a issue with us expanding SR by adding the japanese team, the Arg team and the Kings

but this whole deal with the Kings saddens me to no end, I still figure they will have a decent squad in say 4/5 years or less, this is south africa we produce quality rugby players like brazil produce football players, and eventually they will be able to pay decent salaries, but this could have all been avoided is EPRU just did its job and prepared for super rugby and every possible eventuality, heads must roll. Clearly the powers that be dont know how lead out in EP, until I actually see the ep final squad then I can predict just how much they will struggle, all this disruption certainly doesnt help

It’s unlikely I’l putting Kings players in my fantasy league team

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 6) : bit of a fallacy that SA produces rugby players like Brazil in soccer mate. If we did, why don’t we win more (like Brazil)? We don’t have enough quality for 5 Super teams let alone 6. Four Super teams would be our level I reckon, and even then if you think back to when we had 4 in S12 we hardly covered ourselves in glory.

There is no place for 6 SA teams. Lets not kid ourselves.

  • @Gold_Must_Go (Comment 9) : brazil produce fantastic football players all the time, so much so that some really good ones never even make it into the national teams, and some even feel they stand a better chance of playing regularly at national level if they went and played for a different country. And Brazil dont dominate all the time dude, they go through peaks and valleys like all teams even with so many good players. The number one rated team on the planet right now is belgium, and they have a ton of really good young players now cause 10 years ago they revamped their whole youth national team setup, in fact the whole youth team setup in the country. Germany are world champions, spain before them. There have been many many more football world cups than there are were rugby wc’s. Chile are the south american champions not brazil.

When you look at win percentage of competitive games of brazils football team and the boks, its likely very similar, football teams play a lot more friendlies though, a friendly game of england vs brazil at wembley is fun but neither coach gets killed if they lose. But test match of wales vs boks at the end of year tour, which ever team loses it results in a crysis

so lets see, produces quality players in number like no other nation, poor local economy mean most if not all best playerx play some of their career overseas, national team is always expected to win every competitive game (read all games in rugby), dispite producing so many quality players still gets out thought by nations that put more thought into their game plan

we’re the brazilians of rugby, we could dominated for centuries on end, if we weren’t shooting yourselfs in the foot so often

  • @Poisy (Comment 7) : @robdylan (Comment 8) : there’s a whole article on it on SuperSport website.
Basically no more Vodacom Cup with Currie Cup starting in April to see who will play with six Super rugby teams in Premier division. Also Namibia National side will be part of Currie Cup (wonder how this will impact on players like Bothma and others?).
Another change is only six Super rugby teams and Leopards will be playing under 19 and under 21 rugby, rest will only play under 20.

  • The appointment of Fleck as Stormers head coach for Super Rugby 2016 speaks volumes about the number of decent South African rugby coaches. Almost none.

From Eddie Jones to Robbie Fleck! I can’t quite help feeling a little glee at our wannabe rivals

  • It doesn’t appear that John Mitchell is too desperate to coach then… or if the rumours are true about a player revolt at the prospect of Mitchell arriving, I hope “good old Fleckie” is a real bud to the players and makes them all feel special and warm inside.

  • Fleck Stormers HC……..well no surprises. I am gutted with this decision. WP/ Stormers are once again showing a lack of ambition and are prepared to take winning Conferences as opposed to winning the Superrugby title.
Well, from my side , after 39 years of loyal support, I can now sadly and with a heavy heart say I am done. I no longer consider myself a WP / Stormers supporter.
It is not an easy call to make. Heaven knows a large part of my life revolved around Newlands and the rugby weekends. But I simply cannot stand the mediocrity and lack of ambition these so called administrators show.
I wish them all the best…..but my time and money is going to be better utilised.

  • Fact that the Sharks don’t even have one player in the 7’s set up speaks volumes about the type of player the Sharks find attractive. No surprises why our brand is the most boring in SA. It would be nice to get Werner and Speckman.
