Varsity Cup, sort yourself out

I only got about a third of the way through reading the explanation of the next set of crazy laws to be trialled in Varsity Cup this year before closing the browser tab in disgust and rather moving on to something else.

I’ll not go into detail here – it’s far too convoluted anyway and involves determining where the movement that led to a try actually started in order to decide how many points said try will be worth. It’s obviously yet another attempt to encourage “attacking rugby” or whatever, but I’m personally getting pretty tired of one of the main feeder/development competitions in the game playing by a different set of rules.

Surely, if we’re to use this competition to see talent emerge and let that talent feed into the mainstream professional tournaments like Currie Cup and Super Rugby, we should at least evaluate those boys under the same conditions (or laws, in other words) that they’ll be playing under as professionals? Isn’t Varsity Cup now going to inherently bias selection (and hence exposure) towards players whose natural instinct is to “have a go” from anywhere on the field? Will we ever figure out whether those players are able to apply the sort of judgement necessary to succeed in the real world of professional rugby, where all-out attack simply isn’t an option?

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that aggregate scores of 100+ are very quickly going to become the norm in this competition. Are we teaching a generation of players a whole bunch of bad habits along the way? Only time will tell, I guess, but to me this is madness and needs to stop here.

  • Have never liked the Varsity Cup, it could be great (think college football in America) but it’s done properly. Add to that the messed up rules of age, uni enrollment and the different controversies that have come up, I really don’t like it.

  • I disagree, how else do you attempt to get rid of the brainless mindset that is SA rugby and change that culture or way of thinking, force it via rules that force that change,9 points for a try best thing ever then old SA rugby kicking for penalties is gone and good ridence, the last WC final showed where rugby is going and SA better catch up

  • I understand that they need a platform to trial new rules but i think thats where Koshuis rugby can be used etc. I have no issue with tries scored being value at 6 points and the conversion 3pts with all other penalties etc 2pts to promote attacking and entertaining rugby. But there are 2 facets to rugby and i just think we are producing players that do like to try run from anywhere but also players that cannot defend and dont have the mental strength to concentrate on defense for long periods without giving away a penalty or missing tackles. The perceived boring Boks are caused a panic reaction where we arent producing well rounded players….if im wrong ill be happy to admit it, but im yet to see good defensive youngsters coming through. The natural attacking talent has always been there.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 1) : I for one, really like the uni enrollment story, but as you say, only if it’s done right. As for the rule changes, I don’t think they are thinking about the spectator at all. The powers that be are trying to get more fans in because stadium numbers are dwindling. This might be in part due to the type of rugby on display, but maybe it could have something to do with the fact that sa teams could play each other up to six times a year (up to 9 in 2015) which negates the excitement because we’ve seen it all before. Shorten the seasons and make way for rugby festivals. Think 7sPL or a “state of origin” match

  • @benji (Comment 3) : You will never change how basic skill level until you change it in schools. These guys are matured players, telling them to play a different style will not change their basic skills, that has to be done at the foundations. This is nothing more than an attempt to try increase crowd revenue.

  • …so we’re swapping brain dead crash-ball rugby, for brain-dead run-from-anywhere rugby? πŸ™„

We’re still no closer to nurturing complete rugby players, with the ability to assess the situation in front of them, and come up with the best tactic….whether it is to run, pass, kick, preset move or crash and recycle.

We’re so linear in our thinking πŸ™„

  • I don’t really mind this. It kind of fits with the whole college experience. It’s being played by students and students aren’t really people who live in the real world. Going against the grain, questioning and trying new things is right up their alley. If you go in knowing this, and not expecting to see a preview of Springbok rugby or even Superugby, you’ll be fine. πŸ˜‰

  • @benji (Comment 30) : Sa rugbys problem is not that we cant run it from deep and attack BUT its deciding when to do it. So its our players decision making and concentration that is the main problem. Trying to run the ball everytime from everywhere will only get you into trouble. I think the higher points award for scoring tries as opposed to penalties promotes attacking rugby without having this silly rule change. Now you are going to need TMO replays just to figure out the score nevermind trying to decide if a try was actually scored.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 31) : I don’t agree, the only team who can play that style are the Tjietas, sometimes sublime sometimes real bad,and in that SR final they ran at each other for 80 min from anywhere and everywhere, that carried over into the WC final, you dreaming if you think SA can play that way, they just don’t have the skills firstly and yes secondly no rugby kop at all,so this rule introduction can only be a good thing

  • @benji (Comment 32) : Why do the Cheetahs go from good to bad so quickly- because they dont know when to run and when not to. There are seriously skillful and good attacking runners coming through the systems but its knowing when to run and when to kick thats the problem. If guys dont have the skills already, changing the points is not going to suddenly give them those skills. Its all about mindset. The Lions, Bulls etc have shown in the CC that SA guys can play that way but they still dont have the best decision making to get it right more often than not. The All Blacks kick the most in World Rugby, but they also pass the most. Balance is important.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 33) : I agree balance is everything, but the default setting of SA rugby,2007 rugby and the mindset behind that style has to change,I don’t agree that SA senior players have the skill sets at all for that stle as was shown by said Lions and Bullarinas, while the students are still at an age that they can be upskilled and sometimes the only to change a mindset or habit is through rule change

  • @benji (Comment 34) : The change in a try being worth more will change a mindset. Changing now to running from your own half only promotes being reckless. SA has always been blessed with a good set of forwards and one or two decent backs- hence the forwards orientated approach. Times are changing…watching school boy and age group rugby etc we can see that the players coming through the SA systems now are vastly different to the prior years. Forwards and backs are now both multi skilled and athletic. So yes we need coaches to embrace the change in mindset and utilise the players strengths that they do have. Trust me the problem in SA rugby is a hell of a lot more mental than physical

  • @SheldonK (Comment 35) : yes mental is one aspect of the problem ,skill set also a big factor but also conditioning/physical aspect, how many times do you see SA players running out of steam while the Sheep Shaggers and Cheats take it up a gear or four

  • @benji (Comment 36) : Yes for sure fitness is a big issue…but always has been since 1995. Being fit doesnt mean you are a skillful runner, likewise being a skillful runner doesnt mean you are fit. However, when you are fit you do make better decisions, thats a fact. It always amazes me that when 15s guys go try and play 7s they always remark how tough the trainings are and how fit they need to be- why isnt that the benchmark for our 15s guys from the start though? Just some more food for thought- our 7s team rely mainly on their defense and they getting the ball to the quick guys out wide. So even in a skillful sport we still fall back on the SA strength of a big defense to be effective

  • @benji (Comment 38) : Coaches need to embrace the changing player resources that they now have. They have to show faith in the players and allow them to play. Trust is earned though so players need to concentrate harder and get themselves into the best condition possible so that the trust is earned. Its not an overnight fix…but i do see the tide turning slowly.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 98) : I haven’t actually had the Saboteur before, so will see. I like both the Weiß beers…probably because I am a big Weiß Bier fan! The Striped Horse guys may have got their lot mixed up because the Lager tastes like a Pils and the Pils tastes more like a Lager!! I’m taking my son to Germany in May/June for a huge brass band festival in Dresden…so I will put in a dedicated effort to expand the list of beers I’ve tasted! πŸ˜†

Our “Auswahlchor” (Elite Band) will be holding a concert with two other elite bands from Germany in the Frauenkirche in Dresden…I’m already excited for that!! Our Brass Band Association from South Africa is the only one from anywhere in the world outside Germany that gets that honour so we’re quite excited about it…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 109) : also looks like he bulked up a bit without a noticeable change in pace. The first 9 point try break and pass was all about team play – no ego to try and score self. a few kicks were a bit wobbly but still banged over from far, but all in all I really liked his play and attitude displayed.

  • @Kabouter (Comment 111) : Well we must remember he was on trial with the Sharks during preseason so he would have undergone the conditioning with them so like some of the UKZN guys he does look like he has filled out a bit but is still explosive. What i like about him is that he can see space and also makes good decisions. He is still youngish so still makes mistakes but overall i like his play. I was surprised the Sharks overlooked him

  • @SheldonK (Comment 112) : Cant agree more but can only speculate that the mgmt. want to see what April gives them first. Hopefully he gets called to at least join the CC prelims and be part of the broader squad as we have already seen, injures happen quickly and with the nightmare schedule, his qualities could be of high value and the Sharks are thin on reliable goal kickers. Just being around Willie, JPP, Lwazi and Odwa would be beneficial to his development.

Lets hope he turns out soon in the Black and White and not is some other jersey

He shone as a 10 in the Community Cup but when they signed him he was told by his club only to play him at 15 as thats where they will only play him. I really feel as though he could fight it out with Lambie, Radebe for the 10 jersey with LeRoux, Pieterson and then Rhyno Smith as the options at 15. So ya will wait and see how it turns out

  • @pastorshark (Comment 99) : @Kabouter (Comment 108) : Actually, there’s nothing wrong with the Saboteur (or First Light, for that matter); it’s pleasant beer. But for the cost of craft beer I don’t want “pleasant”, I want “memorable”.

Also, I’ve gone off Weiss beer in a big way; the Paulaner Hefe Weiss used to be one of my favourites, but I’ve had one that’s been standing in the fridge for months, that I just can’t get myself to open. Right now I live by the credo “It’s a good day that contains an IPA!”.
